In this paper, a technique is presented to locate and track the facial areas in image and videodatabases. The extracted facial regions are used to obtain a number of features that are suitable for content-based storage and retrieval. The proposed face localization method consists of essentially two components: i) a color processing unit, and ii) a shape and color analysis module. The color processing component utilizes the distribution of skin-tones in the HSV color space to obtain an initial set of candidate regions or objects. The latter shape and color analysis module is used to correctly identify the facial regions when falsely detected objects are extracted. A number of features such as hair color, skin-tone, and face location and size are subsequently determined from the extracted facial areas. The hair and skin colors provide useful descriptions related to the human characteristics while the face location and size can reveal information about the activity within the scene (i.e. spatial relationships with other objects), and the type of image (i.e. portrait shot, complete body). These features can be effectively combined with others and employed in user queries to retrieve particular facial images.

storage and retrieval of multimedia has become a requirement for many contemporary information systems. These systems need to provide browsing, querying, navigation, and, sometimes, composition capabilities involving various forms of media. In this survey, we review techniques and systems for image and videoretrieval. We first look at visual features for imageretrieval such as color, texture. shape, and spatial relationships. The indexing techniques are discussed for these features. Nonvisual features include captions, annotations. relational attributes, and structural descriptions. Temporal aspects of videoretrieval and video segmentation are discussed next. We review several systems for image and videoretrieval including research, commercial. and World Wide Web-based systems. We conclude with an overview of current challenges and future trends for image and videoretrieval.

In this paper, a novel visual search engine for videoretrieval and tracking from compressed multimedia databases is proposed. Our approach exploits the structure of video compression standards in order to perform object matching directly on the compressed video data. This is achieved by utilizing motion compensation-a critical prediction filter embedded in video compression standards-to estimate and interpolate the desired method for template matching. Motion analysis is used to implement fast tracking of objects of interest on the compressed video data. Being presented with a query in the form of template images of objects, the system operates on the compressed video in order to find the images or video sequences where those objects are present and their positions in the image. This in turn enables the retrieval and display of the query-relevant sequences.

This paper describes the videoSTAR experimental database system that is being designed to support video applications in sharing and reusing video data and meta-data. videoSTAR provides four different repositories: for media files, virtual documents, video structures, and video annotations/user indexes. It also provides a generic video data model relating data in the different repositories to each other, and it offers a powerful application interface. videoSTAR concepts have been evaluated by developing a number of experimental video tools, such as a video player, a video annotator, a video authoring tool, a video structure and contents browser, and a video query tool.
