In this paper, we study the possibility of using Θ-index for retrieval of imagebase. imageretrieval is related to partition in an image space. If there exists a mapping from an image space to a feature space, the partition in the image space can be converted into a partition in the feature space. To retrieve an image, some features of the image must be identified. Feature identification can be considered as optimal assignment of some indices to images. This is equivalent to an optimal partition of image space into mutual exclusive regions, each corresponding to particular values of a set of indices. In our system, the feature extraction is implemented by a two-dimensional Θ-transformation. The time complexity for a Θ-transformation is very low. Therefore, for a certain class of images, Θ- transformation is a very efficient algorithm for image indexing.

In this paper, we present topics related to tracking of video objects in compressed videodatabases in the context of videoretrieval applications. We developed a videoretrieval and tracking system (VORTEX) to enable operation directly on compressed video data. The structure of the video compression standards is exploited in order to avoid the costly decompression operation. This is achieved by utilizing motion compensation-a critical prediction filter embedded in video compression standards-to estimate and interpolate the desired method for template matching. Occlusion analysis, filtering and motion analysis are used to implement fast tracking of objects of interest on the compressed video data. Being presented with a query in the form of template images of objects, the system operates on the compressed video in order to find the images or video sequences where those objects are present and their positions in the image. This enables the retrieval and display of the query-relevant sequences.

This paper presents a video indexing and representation tool for sequences which contain moving persons, using a model-based dynamic scene analysis. A scenario, describing the sequence in terms of basic events, is proposed. These events constitute a first level of annotation and are used to build a visual representation of the sequence called Object Based video Icon. Experiments are carried out and a prototype system is described.

A rotation, translation, and scaling (RTS) invariant color image indexing technique for imaging database systems is described. To demonstrate the RTS property of the imageretrieval, four databases are experimented in the computer simulation of the algorithm. The proposed technique is found to be unaffected by substantial changes in the database images due to rotation, translation, and scaling. This makes the technique very robust and attractive for a number of applications of the imagestorage and retrieval systems.

In this paper, we present a novel technique that can be used for fast similarity-based indexing and retrieval of both image and videodatabases in distributed environments. We assume that image or videodatabases are stored in the compressed form using standard techniques such as JPEG for images, and M-JPEG or MPEG for videos. The existing techniques, proposed in the literature, use computationally intensive features and cost functions for content-based image and videoretrieval and indexing. The proposed algorithm uses an innovative approach based on histograms of DC coefficients only, and therefore is computationally less expensive than the other approaches. In the case of a JPEG-compressed image database, the query process is the following. The user submits a request for search-by-similarity by presenting the desired image. The algorithm calculates the DC coefficients of this image and creates the histogram of DC coefficients. Then, the algorithm compares the DC histogram of the submitted image with the DC histograms of the images stored in the database using a histogram similarity metric. The image database can be local or at a remote server. In our experiments, we compared several histogram similarity metrics: weighted Euclidean distance, square difference, and absolute difference. The algorithm then selects and presents to the user the images with the smallest values of the metric that best match the submitted image. In the case of a compressed video database, the similarity-based indexing and retrieval is more complex. The manipulation of a video database consists of three main operations: (1) partitioning of the video into clips, (2) key frame extraction, and (3) indexing and retrieval of key frames. The proposed algorithm has been applied in all three steps. First, the DC histograms are implemented for partitioning each video into clips or camera shots. Then, in the next phase the same DC histograms are used to extract key frames and create a database of ke

In order to retrieve a set of intended images from a huge image archive, human beings think of special contents with respect to the searched scene, like a countryside or a technical drawing. Therefore, in general it is harder to retrieve images by using a syntactical feature- based language than a language which offers the selection of examples concerning color, texture, and contour in combination with natural language concepts. This motivation leads to a content-based image analysis and goes on to a content-based storage and retrieval of images. Furthermore, it is unreasonable for any human being to make the content description for thousands of images manually. From this point of view, the project IRIS (imageretrieval for information systems) combines well-known methods and techniques in computer vision and AI in a new way to generate content descriptions of images in a textual form automatically. IRIS retrieves the images by means of text retrieval realized by the SearchManager/6000. The textual description is generated by four sub-steps: feature extraction like colors, textures, and contours, segmentation, and interpretation of part-whole relations. The system is implemented on IBM RS/6000 using AIX. It has already been tested with 350 images.

The usefulness of a collection of scanned graphical documents can be measured by the facilities available for their retrieval. We present an approach for indexing a collection of line drawings automatically. The indexing is based on the textual and graphical content of the drawings. This approach has been developed to facilitate `retrieval by example' in heterogeneous collections of graphical documents. No a priori knowledge about the application domain is assumed. Starting with a raster image, candidate character patterns and graphical primitives (i.e., line segments and arcs) are extracted. Candidate character patterns are classified by an OCR method and grouped into word hypotheses. Graphical features of various types are computed from groupings of graphical primitives (e.g., sequences of adjacent lines, pairs of parallel lines). retrieval occurs with a weighted information retrieval system. Each document of the collection and each query are described with a set of indexing features with their corresponding weights. The weight of an indexing feature reflects the descriptive nature of the feature and is computed from the number of occurrences of the indexing feature in the document (feature frequency ff) and the number of documents containing the indexing feature (document frequency df).

A novel similarity measure based on the Choquet integral was introduced for retrieving images from a image database that 'mostly' fit the query image. We showed that in certain conditions the measure is a norm, a fact that can be used to reduce the searching time using the triangle inequality. To test the new measure, a content based imageretrieval system was build. The system was benchmarked against the visual retrieval cartridge, Virage, built into Oracle 8 database system. The results suggested that the new measure is useful for imageretrieval.

A scheme that reduces the needed storage considerably without reducing the retrieval effectiveness of a content-based imageretrieval (CBIR) system such as ASSERT is introduced. This scheme enables ASSERT to retrieve the most similar physician-marked key images from the other patients, and those adjacent images that cohere with the key images. Only the key images and the other images that cohere with the key images are retained for archival purposes. This significantly reduces the amount of storage needed for fast retrieval.
