This paper addresses the problem of recovering the semantic structure of broadcast news. A hierarchy of retrievable units is automatically constructed by integrating information from different media. The hierarchy provides a compact yet meaningful abstraction of the broadcast news data similar to a conventional table of content that can serve as an effective index table, facilitating the capability of browsing through large amounts of data in a non-linear fashion. The recovery of the semantic structure of the data further enables the automated solutions in constructing visual representations that are relevant to the semantics as well as in establishing useful relationships among data units such as topic categorization and content based multimedia hyperlinking. Preliminary experiments of integrating different media for hierarchical segmentation of semantics have yielded encouraging results. Some of the results are presented and discussed in this paper.

Abstr. video information automatically from the TV broadcast requires reliable methods for isolating program and commercial segments out of the full broadcast material. In this paper we present the results from cut, static sequence, black frame and text detection for the purpose of isolating non-program segments. These results are evaluated by comparison to human visual inspection using over 13 hours of varied program content. Using cut rate detection alone produced a high recall with a medium precision. Text detection was performed on the commercials and the false positive segments. Adding text detection slightly lowers the recall, however, much higher precision is achieved. A new fast black frame detector algorithm is presented. Black frame detection is important for identifying the commercial boundaries. The results indicate that adding the detection of text in addition to cut rate to reduce the number of false positives appears to be a promising method. Furthermore, by adding the information about the position and size of the text and tracking it through an area should further increase the reliability.

Various methods of automatic shot boundary detection have been proposed and claimed to perform reliably. Although the detection of edits is fundamental to any kind of video analysis since it segments a video into its basic components, the shots, only few comparative investigations on early shot boundary detection algorithms have been published. These investigations mainly concentrate on measuring the Edit detection performance, however;do not consider the algorithms' ability to classify the types and to locate the boundaries of the edits correctly. This gaper extends these comparative investigations More recent algorithms designed explicitly to detect specific complex editing operations such as fades and dissolves are taken into account and their ability to classify the types and locate the boundaries of such edits are examined. The algorithms' performance is measured in terms of hit rate, number of false hits, and miss rate for hard cuts, fades, and dissolves over a large and diverse set of video sequences. The experiments show, that while hard cuts and fades can be detected reliably, dissolves are still an open research issue The fate hit rate for dissolves is usually unacceptably high, ranging from 50% up to over 400%. Moreover;all algorithms seem to fail under roughly the same conditions.

A fuzzy logic system for the detection of shot boundaries in video sequences is presented. It integrates multiple metrics and knowledge of editing procedures to detect shot boundaries. Furthermore, the system is capable of classifying the editing process employed to create the shot boundary into one of the following categories: abrupt cut, fade-in, fade-out, or dissolve.

At the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, a research and development division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), we are developing a prototype multimedia system to provide World Wide Web access to biomedical databases. WebMIRS (Web-based Medical Information retrieval System) will allow access to databases containing text and images and will allow database query by standard SQL, by image content, or by a combination of the two. The system is being developed in the form of Java applets, which will communicate with the Informix DBMS on an NLM Sun workstation running the Solaris operating system. The system architecture will allow access from any hardware platform, which supports a Java-enabled Web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. Initial databases will include data from two national health surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), and will include x-ray images from those surveys. In addition to describing in-house research in database access systems, this paper describes ongoing work toward querying by image content. image content search capability will include capability to search for x-ray images similar to an input image with respect to vertebral morphometry used to characterize features such as fractures and disc space narrowing.

QBIC* is a set of technologies and associated software that allows a user to search, browse, and retrieve image, graphic, and video data from large on-line collections. This paper discusses current research directions of the QBIC project such as indexing for high-dimensional multimedia data, retrieval of grey level images, and storyboard generation suitable for video. It describes aspects of QBIC software including scripting tools, application interfaces, and available GUIs, and gives examples of applications and demonstration systems using it.

There is a growing need for new representations of video that allow not only compact storage of data but also content-based functionalities such as search and manipulation of objects. We present here a prototype system, called NeTra-V, that is currently being developed to address some of these content related issues. The system has a two-stage video processing structure: a global feature extraction and clustering stage, and a local feature extraction and object-based representation stage. Key aspects of the system include a new spatio-temporal segmentation and object-tracking scheme, and a hierarchical object-based video representation model. The spatio-temporal segmentation scheme combines the color/texture image segmentation and affine motion estimation techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can handle large motion. The output of the segmentation, the alpha plane as it is referred to in the MPEG-4 terminology, can be used to compute local image properties. This local information forms the low-level content description module in our video representation. Experimental results illustrating spatio-temporal segmentation and tracking are provided.

In the convergence of information and entertainment there is a conflict between the consumers's expectation of fast access to high quality multimedia content through narrow bandwidth channels versus the size of this content. During the retrieval and information presentation of a multimedia application there are two problems that have to be solved: the limited bandwidth during transmission of the retrieved multimedia content and the limited memory for temporary caching. In this paper we propose an approach for latency optimization in information browsing applications. We propose a method for flattening hierarchically linked documents in a manner convenient for network transport over slow channels to minimize browsing latency. Flattening of the hierarchy involves linearization, compression and bundling of the document nodes. After the transfer, the compressed hierarchy is stored on a local device where it can be partly unbundled to fit the caching limits at the local site while giving the user availability to the content. This optimal bundling method will work for general Web browsing, wireless browsing as well as video library applications. In the paper we consider the video library browsing in more detail. The video is summarized in a Visual Table of Content (VToC), which consists of sample multimedia content items such as video segments, images, audio, text and other derived information. The physical structure holding VToC is stored in a visual index and requires considerable storage size. During the storage process, the index must be flattened to a linear structure in order to be retrieved from a low bandwidth medium. We discuss the methods to optimize the retrieval latency. Specifically, we consider how to linearize the visual index structure in different segments with ordered download priorities while constraining the bandwidth and storage. The system could adjust the user's personal preferences by learning from consumer use patterns.

An efficient method is derived to classify the dominant camera motions in video shots. Various 3-D camera motions including camera pan, tilt, zoom, Z-rotation, and translations are detected. The method is to analyze the optical flow in a decomposed manner. images are divided into some sub-regions according to our camera model. The projected x and y components of optical flow are analyzed separately in the different sub-regions of the images. Different camera motions are recognized by comparing the computed result with the prior known patterns. The optical flow is computed by using the Lucas-Kanade method, which is quite efficient due to non-iteration computation. Our method is efficient and effective because only some mean values and standard deviations are used. The analysis and detailed description of our method is given in this paper. Experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of our method.

Many data-intensive applications, such as content-based retrieval of images or video from multimedia database and similarity retrieval of patterns;in data mining, require the ability the efficiently performing similarity queries. Unfortunately, the performance of nearest neighbor (NN) algorithms, the basis for similarity search, quickly deteriorates with the number of dimensions. In this paper we propose a method called Clustering with Singular Value Decomposition (CSVD), combining clustering and singular value decomposition (SVD) to reduce the number of index dimensions. With CSVD, points are grouped into clusters that are more amenable to dimensionality reduction than the original dataset, Experiments with texture vectors extracted from satellite images show that CSVD achieves significantly higher dimensionality reduction than SVD alone for the satellite fraction of total variance with preserved. Conversely, for thr same compression ratio CSVD results in an increase in preserved total variance with respect to SVD (e.g,, a 70% increase fear a. 20:1 compression ratio). Then, approximate NN queries are more efficiently processed, as quantified through experimental results.
