Event-Based Microservices With Apache Kafka Streams: A Real-Time Vehicle Detection System Based on Type, Color, and Speed Attributes

The work presented in this paper proposes a novel approach to tracking a specific vehicle over the video streams published by the collaborating traffic surveillance cameras. In recent years, smart, effective transportation systems and intelligent traffic management applications are among the topics that have been given importance by various institutions. Developing a scalable, fault-tolerant, and resilient traffic monitoring system that retrieves video chunks with the desired query is challenging. For these challenging problems, stream processing and data retrieval systems have been developed over the years. However, there are still existing shortcomings between users and retrieval systems. This paper investigates the problem of retrieving video chunks by key-value query based on publish/subscribe model. Thus, we propose a hybrid of an asynchronous and synchronous communication mechanism for the Event-Based Microservice framework. We aim to develop generic techniques for better utilization of existing platforms. In the proposed framework, (i) first of all, microservices detect vehicles and extract their type, color, and speed features, and stored them in the metadata repository. (ii) Microservices publish each feature as events (iii) Other microservices self-join subscribe to those events, which leads to more events being published by combing all the possibilities: type-color, type-speed, color-speed, and type-color-speed. Finally, (iv) the system visualizes the query result and system status in real-time. When the user has selected color or/and a type or/and a speed feature, the system will return the best-matched vehicles without re-processing the videos. Experimental results show that our proposed system filters messages in real-time and supports easy integration of new microservices with the existing system.

ClickPoints: an expandable toolbox for scientific image annotation and analysis

1. Optical recordings are ubiquitous in current scientific research. As recording and storing images and videos have become simpler and cheaper over the past years, new and more efficient tools are needed to analyse the growing amount of data. While current scientific image analysis tools focus on medical 3D data sets, a tool for efficiently handling large-scale 2D time-series recordings is still missing. 2. We developed Click Points, an expandable, open-source, Python-based software to fill this gap. ClickPoints combines and streamlines the three main steps of image analysis - visualization, annotation and evaluation - in one program. 3. ClickPoints enables the user to (i) efficiently review large data sets of images and videos, (ii) annotate interesting findings and (iii) facilitate manual and automatic evaluations. ClickPoints is highly versatile, ranging from clicking and selecting objects with simple markers, drawing masks and computing trajectories, up to (iv) custom-written Python add-ons for adapting or extending the available features. These add-ons (v) reduce development time by utilizing Click Points' display, interface and storage solutions. In addition, ClickPoints provides an (vi) extensive data base application programming interface to facilitate efficient storage and retrieval of results. 4. ClickPoints is designed to simplify repetitive and labour-intensive scientific tasks, especially when dealing with large image and video time-series recordings. In the next few years consumers will have access to large amounts of video and image data either created by themselves with digital video and still cameras or by having access to other image and video content electronically. Existing personal computer hardware and software has not been designed to manage large quantities of multimedia content. As a result, research in the area of content-based video retrieval (CBVR) has been underway for the last fifteen years. This research aims to improve CBVR by providing an accurate and reliable shape-colour representation and by providing a new 3D user interface called DomeWorld for the efficient browsing of large video databases. Existing feature extraction techniques designed for use in large databases are typically simple techniques as they must conform to the limited processing and storage constraints that are exhibited by large scale databases. Conversely, more complex feature extraction techniques provide higher- level descriptions of the underlying data but are time consuming and require large amounts of storage making them less useful for large databases. In this thesis a technique for medium to high- level shape representation is presented that exhibits efficient storage and query performance. The technique uses a very accurate contour detection system that incorporates a new asymmetry edge detector which is shown to perform better than other contour detection techniques combined with a new summarisation technique to efficiently store contours. In addition, contours are represented by histograms further reducing space requirements and increasing query performance. A new type of histogram is introduced called the fuzzy histogram and is applied to content-based retrieval systems for the first time. Fuzzy histograms improve the ranking of query results over non-fuzzy techniques especially in low bin-count histogram configurations. The explosive growth of images and videos on the World Wide Web (WWW) is making the Web into a huge resource of visual information. Among various types of multimedia information, still images or dynamic images (video clips) in compressed format are the most widely accepted on the WWW. Therefore, it becomes an essential issue to achieve the maximum efficiency in transmitting and decoding those compressed images on the Internet. Progressive coding provides a mode that allows a coarse version of an image being transmitted at a lower bit rate and then gradually refined by subsequent transmissions. Compared with conventional coding, it is more suitable for interactive applications such as those involving JPEG images on the Internet. In this paper, we first give an approximation of cosine function used in IDCT for the various orders. Based on the approximation and a series analysis, we then develop a progressive decoding scheme which comprehends the successive approximation and the spectral selection. The analysis and experiments establish the fact that our proposed method saves computational cost significantly in comparison with the existing spectral selection based progressive decoding proposed by JPEG. Extensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm, which reveals that, the reconstructed images, even at the lowest bit rate and with lower order approximation, can still achieve encouraging PSNR values.

A multimedia database management system (DBMS) provides support for the creation, storage, access, querying and control of a multimedia database. The requirements of a multimedia DBMS are: multimedia data modeling; multimedia object storage; multimedia indexing, retrieval and browsing; and multimedia query support. This paper discusses a general framework for multimedia database systems and describes the requirements and architecture for these systems.

Augmented Album is an application developed to demonstrate how user situations can be used to provide an easy-to-use and easy-to-remember interface for the management and retrieval of digital pictures that consist of both digital video clips and still images. In this system, contextual information such as the location, time, and user events, are captured when a picture is taken. It represents the meaning of the picture as well as its content information to some extent, and thus benefits us to retrieve image/video clips. At the same time, the contextual information could be used to achieve a more realistic organization of those pictures on a computer system.

A different approach to content-based retrieval and a novel framework for classification of visual information are proposed. The Visual Apprentice which is an implementation of the framework for still images and video that uses a combination of lazy-learning, decision trees, and evolution programs for classification and grouping is introduced. Examples and results are given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach to perform visual classification and detection.

Content based retrieval on large multimedia database attracts the interests of many researchers, but the database architecture needed for content based retrieval is still an open problem. Traditional relation database system does not support the high-dimension feature form content description and indexing, thus is limited in its content based retrieval function. Some systems do support high-dimension feature form content description and indexing, but lacks descriptions and query expressions on media object content and relations. In this paper, we present our study results on query mechanism and proposed CbExpr - a powerful flexible query expression mechanism on media object. Based on CbExpr we proposed GMA (general mediabase architecture) - a general architecture for management and content based retrieval on large media databases, and videoBase - a content based video retrieval system is present as example of GMA. Basic thoughts, considerations, and definitions are presented in the paper, also with some implementation details.

This paper introduces a model of spatio-temporal database that we are developing to query interesting events in video sequences. The database that we are designing is pushing the state of the art for a number of fields, and there are many issues that are still waiting a satisfactory solution. In this paper we present our (albeit still partial) answer to some of these problems, and the future directions of our work. Our design is divided in two layers: a Logbook which operates as a short time repository of unsummarized and unprocessed data, and a long term spatio-temporal database which stores and queries summarized data.
