SIMPLY BELLS AND WHISTLES? Cognitive Effects of visual aesthetics in Digital Longforms

The success of digital longforms in terms of readership and viral spread promotes an optimistic perspective on innovative web journalism with regard to the attention, engagement, and subsequent knowledge acquisition of citizens when consuming news. Since empirical evidence for such effects is scant, this experimental study focuses on visual aesthetics as a signature element of novel news formats that are designed to attract attention in a highly competitive media landscape. Specifically, it draws on the theoretical framework of user engagement and shows that the presence of visual aesthetics contributes to meaningful learning from the news by initiating positive attitudes towards the interface, which in turn leads to deeper involvement with the content. However, when the presence of visual aesthetics fails to affect interface evaluation, the opposite effect occurs. Surprisingly, these effects are not found to be contingent upon individual differences such as issue involvement or issue-specific prior knowledge. Overall, our results suggest that for news organizations, it is worth investing financial and personal resources in innovative news formats in order to support knowledge gain, although they need to be carefully designed as the first encounter with the interface decides about the subsequent engagement with and processing of the news.

human interaction and carrier of feelings among humans are accomplished mainly through five senses, such as touch, smell, taste, audio, and visual. Considering visual sense, images and videos are important gradients in day-to-day life. It can elevate/depress mood of a person. Video aesthetics improves user satisfaction. In this study of mood detection, we are demonstrating an approach which is automatically assessed the aesthetics of videos, with emphasis on detecting the mood of videos. With the rising popularity of DSLR camera, Mobile dual camera, the amount of visual data available on the internet is expanding exponentially. Some of the videos and pictures are aesthetically pleasing and beautiful to human eyes. But there are some videos as well as photos which are uninteresting and of low-quality. This paper demonstrates a simple but powerful method to classify videos into pleasing and non-pleasing categories. Further, our aesthetic quality assessment will find the mood of aesthetically pleasing video (i.e. video representing a happy video or sad or fear, etc), that reflect on a person's mood. © 2019 IEEE.

Persuasion: How phishing emails can influence users and bypass security measures

Phishing is a very dangerous form of social engineering with the aim to deceive people into disclosing private/confidential information. Despite widespread warnings and means to educate users to identify phishing messages, these are still a prevalent practice and a lucrative business. The authors believe that persuasion, as a style of human communication designed to influence others, has a central role in successful digital scams. Research on persuasion applied to phishing emails is scarce and tends to build on Cialdini's work alone. Only a single study has proposed a list of merged principles from three different perspectives but it has methodological limitations regarding the analysis' performance by a single researcher and the testing of principles in a small, not validated sample of phishing emails. This paper aims to fill those gaps by building on Cialdini's, Gragg's and Stajano & Wilson's works to derive a unique list of Principles of Persuasion in Social Engineering (PPSE), resulting from the application of the relational method by two independent researchers. The PPSE are identified, by two independent researchers (Kappa > 0.789) on a sample of phishing email subject lines (N = 194), dated from 2008 to 2017 and randomly selected from a reliable phishing archive (*** ). A thematic content analysis, together with the sample characterization in terms of visual elements and targeted content, revealed that the most prominent principles of persuasion in phishing emails were 'Authority', 'Strong Affect', 'Integrity' and `Reciprocation'. The larger percentage of references with the presence of visual elements was found for the `Strong Affect' principle. The use of the pronouns 'you' and 'your' was more evident for the categories 'Strong Affect' and 'Authority', while the employment of the pronouns 'we, us, our' was more frequent in the `Reciprocation' principle. This paper constitutes a step further in understanding the use of principles of persuasion

What makes you feel attached to smartwatches? The stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) perspectives

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of whether smartwatches will survive and gain their own niche within the consumer electronics market. Based on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework, this study identifies and validates the impacts of both technological and fashion-related factors (interactivity, autonomy, visual aesthetics and self-expression) on product attachment towards smartwatches through user satisfaction and pleasure derived from their smartwatches. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected the survey data via online surveys from 198 respondents and tested measurement and structural models with the partial least square technique. Findings The authors found that both technological characteristics (interactivity and autonomy) and fashion-related characteristics (visual aesthetics and self-expression) have an impact on product attachment through pleasure. Research limitations/ implications - Several other important characteristics of traditional wrist- watches such as durability or workmanship are not considered in this study, but should be included in future studies. The three- item measure of autonomy may be insufficient for more sophisticated wearable devices in the future. In future studies, the impact of product attachment on users' continued usage should be examined. Practical implications - This study provides important practical implications for smartwatch makers interested in product development, as users were found to consider fashion- related characteristics to be as important as technological characteristics. Originality/ value - This study is the first study that considers both aesthetic and technological factors for IT acceptance in the context of wearable devices. Also, instead of traditional IT acceptance measures such as continued use, this study investigates users' product attachment, which is more relevant to the case of wearable devices. The set of physical and sensitive phenomena that interacts with the urban morphology acts on the resulting perception from the users of a place. Its study and representation provides elements beyond the aesthetics aspects that can allow a better understanding of the space and future urban projects. We aim to analyze the effects of three different wind representations in terms of perception and sense of presence in virtual reality (VR). We focus on the following conditions: (R) reference scene with the audiovisual representation of the mechanical effects of the wind on the elements of the context, (V) reference scene plus the visualization of the wind flow, present (among others) in the architecture field, (T) reference scene plus tactile restitution of wind and eventually (V+T) assembling all previous conditions. For the experiment, we present to the participants (R), then (V) followed by (T), and finish with (V+T). 37 participants evaluated 12 different stop points (divided into four routes in the same simulated street), where they had to determine the perceived wind force and direction concerning the four different conditions (each one corresponding to one route). At the end of each route, participants evaluated their sense of presence in the VR scene. Our analysis showed significant effects of tactile restitution over the visual effects used in the study, both for understanding wind properties and for increasing the sense of presence in the VR scene. In terms of wind direction, (T) reduced the estimation error by 27% compared to (V). Concerning wind force, the reduction was 9.8%. As far as presence was concerned, (T) increased the sense of presence by 12.2% compared to (V). Research has shown that visual aesthetics plays a key role in the persuasiveness of behavior change support systems. However, there is limited knowledge on how much each of the two dimensions of visual aesthetics (classical and expressive) contributes to the aestheticspersuasiveness relationship. To bridge this gap, we conducted an empirical study among 669 subjects in North America to investigate: (1) the interrelationships among all three design constructs-classical aesthetics, expressive aesthetics and persuasiveness-using fitness apps featuring exercise behavior models as a case study;and (2) the moderating effect of the gender, race and exercise-type characteristics of the behavior model. Our Structure Equation Model (SEM) analysis shows that, regardless of the gender, race and exercise-type characteristics of the behavior model, both classical aesthetics and expressive aesthetics significantly impact persuasiveness. Overall, our path model explains 41% of the variance of persuasiveness, with expressive aesthetics having a stronger direct influence and mediating the influence of classical aesthetics on persuasiveness. Our findings underscore the need for designers of persuasive apps to leverage both dimensions of visual aesthetics-especially expressive aesthetics-in the design of behavior models to increase their persuasiveness as change agents. © Dupré et al. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death worldwide. It is treated with a defibrillating shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. AEDs are commonly used by minimally-trained rescuers to treat patients of SCA, and need to be designed to be intuitive to use. However, there are no guidelines or recommendations for the user interface design of these devices, and as such, there are obvious inconsistencies in the aesthetics and functionality, of AEDs currently on the market. This study was designed to assess the variability and determine the visual hierarchy of a range of public access AEDs. Research studies have suggested that web viewers scan websites following the F-shaped pattern starting from the top left hand side and moving towards the bottom part of the website. However, this claim is yet to be investigated carefully. The current paper reports on an eye tracking experiment conducted to compare the influence of two popular website layouts, i.e. the three column layout and the grid layout, on information search behavior, user attention and perceived usability. Sixteen participants were recruited and instructed to complete two information search tasks of varying complexity on each layout. The eye tracking metrics showed that the participants did not strictly follow the F-shaped scanning pattern. The column layout exhibited an extensive reading pattern and larger fixation densities than the grid layout. The search tasks seem to inhibit the effects of saliency and visual objects, including pictures and banner adverts, on visual attention. Moreover, participants found the search targets faster in the column layout and favored the column layout over the grid layout. Organizing content within column based web layouts expedites online reading and creates a positive user experience.
