The Globus Data grid architecture provides a scalable infrastructure for the management of storage resources and data that are distributed across grid environments. These services are designed to support a variety of scientific applications, ranging from high-energy physics to computational genomics, that require access to large amounts of data (terabytes or even petabytes) with varied quality of service requirements. By layering on a set of core services, such as data transport, security, and replica cataloging, one can construct various higher-level services. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of a high-level replica selection service that uses information regarding replica location and user preferences to guide selection from among storage replica alternatives. We first present a basic replica selection service design, then show how dynamic information collected using Globus information service capabilities concerning storage system properties can help improve and optimize the selection process. We demonstrate the use of Condor's ClassAds resource description and matchmaking mechanism as an efficient tool for representing and matching storage resource capabilities and policies against application requirements.

In this paper, we propose a protocol for load sharing among a cluster of heterogeneous Unix workstations. Our protocol, called the Distributed Process Management Protocol (DPMP). not only enables load sharing using nonpreemptive process migration but also seamlessly integrates the processes running on a network of machines. Remote processes can be accessed (for signalling, for example), in the same way as local processes making process migration highly transparent to the users and the applications, DPMP also has builtin mechanisms to detect and recover from node and network failures. DPMP can be implemented at either the kernel or the user level. We also describe an implententation of DPMP within the Linux kernel. Preliminary performance studies show that the performance gains obtained by using DPMP are substantial.

Teamster is a transparent DSM system built on a cluster of symmetric x86 multiprocessors connected with 100Mb Fast Ethernet. Teamster has a hybrid thread architecture that programmer can parallelize their application without concerning the underlying hardware configuration. The Global Memory Image of Teamster provides a truly, global s and synchronization objects are put into GMI Because we declare and initialize these data and objects in the beginning. the linker of the operating system helps us forming this c need explicit annotations to propagate the modification of global static variables. With the support of hybrid thread architecture and Global Memory Image, Teamster can provide a truly transparent DSM in the cluster of SMP computers. More than that, the overhead of creating more application threads and supporting Global Memory linage dont affect the performance of Teamster in our measurement.

Distributed computing applications rely, on transmissions of messages between processes. However as workstations are not intended to manage this kind of communications, it is necessary to use some communication tools known as Message Passing libraries. Currently, MPI (Message Passing Interface) and PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) are the most used. In addition, the need for interoperability among the rapidly proliferating number of hardwares and softwares led to the definition of CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture), which standardizes the execution support of distributed object applications. This architecture offers a good interoperability and encapsulation support. Moreover, its method invocation mechanism, offers several features and can be used as a good communication model. Consequently, the use of such architecture for distributed and grid computing applications seems interesting and promising. However, CORBA is always criticized on the performances level. By taking account of all these elements, a performance evaluation of CORBA seems necessary. The topic of this paper is to present our benchmark results of some CORBA implementations (ORBacus and TAO) and to compare them with those of the two message passing libraries MPI (MPICH and LAM) and PVM, by using a Network of Work Stations (NOW).

With the progress of research on cluster computing, more and more universities have begun to offer various courses covering cluster computing. A wide variety of content can be taught in these courses. Because of this. a difficulty that arises is the selection of appropriate course material. The selection is complicated by the fact that some content in cluster computing is also covered by other courses such as operating systems, networking, or computer architecture. In addition. the background of students enrolled in cluster computing courses varies. These aspects of cluster computing make the development of good course material difficult. Combining our experiences in teaching cluster computing in several universities in the USA and Australia and conducting tutorials at many international conferences all over the world, we present prospective topics in cluster computing along with a wide variety of information sources (books, software, and materials on the web) from which instructors can choose. The course material described includes system architecture, parallel programming, algorithms, and applications. Instructors are advised to choose selected units in each of the topical areas and develop their own syllabus to meet course objectives. For example, a full course can be taught on system architecture for core computer science students. Or, a course on parallel programming could contain a brief coverage of system architecture and then devote the majority of time to programming methods. Other combinations are also possible. We share our experiences in teaching cluster computing and the topics we have chosen depending on course objectives.

Systems for the archival and retrieval of images are used in many areas, for example medical applications, news agencies, etc. The state-of-the-art approach for image description considers a priori extracted features. The disadvantageous reduction of the image content onto a few low-level features limits the applicability of image databases. A search for objects and other important image components requires dynamic feature extraction. The related computational and storage requirements exceed the possibilities Of computer architectures with a single processing element. Therefore we developed a cluster platform, which supports the implementation of this novel retrieval approach in existing systems. In this paper ve introduce the basic principles of image retrieval with dynamic feature extraction and a cluster platform. The main focus regards thereby the workload balancing across the cluster For this purpose ive developed a scheduling heuristic and executed performance measurements with the implemented prototype. The obtained results are discussed in the last part of this paper.

The SIRAC laboratory. has developed SciFS, a Distributed Shared Memory, (DSM) that tries to benefit from the high performances and the remote addressing capabilities of the Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) memory mapped network, We use SciFS for high performance cluster computing and we also experiment with it to build large scale clustered web caches. We propose Whoops! a clustered web cache prototype with a new request distribution algorithm, called PPBL (Parallel Pull-Based LRU), especially designed for use with a memory. mapped network and a DSM system. Unlike other distribution algorithms the decision is distributed over all nodes thus providing better scalability. We evaluate a first PPBL implementation and discuss scalability issues. Then, ive propose a solution to build a scalable implementation of PPBL, We conclude with other improvements that can be achieved to build efficient large scale clustered web caches using a DSM over memory mapped networks.

In this paper we address the problem of scheduling a large size divisible load on a hypercube cluster of processors. Unlike in earlier studies in the divisible load theory (DLT) literature, here, we assume that the processors have finite-size buffers. Further, we impose constraints on the extent to which the load can be divided, referred to as granularity constraint. We first present the closed-form solutions for the case with infinite-size buffers. For the case with load granularity constraint, we propose a simple algorithm to find the sub-optimal solution and then we analyze the case when these buffer are of finite size. For this case, we present an elegant strategy, referred to as Incremental Balancing Strategy (IBS), to obtain an optimal load distribution. Based on the rigorous mathematical analysis, a number of interesting and useful properties exhibited by the algorithm are proven. Numerical examples are presented for the ease of understanding.

An inexpensive way to construct a scalable display wall system is to use a cluster of PCs with commodity graphics accelerators to drive an array of projectors. A challenge is to bring off-the-shelf sequential applications to run on such a display wall efficiently without using expensive, high-performance interconnects. This paper studies two execution models for a scalable display wall system: master-slave and synchronized execution models. We have designed and implemented four software tools, two for each execution model, including VDD (Virtual Display Driver), GLP (GL-DLL Replacement), SSE (System-level Synchronized Execution), and ASE (Application-level Synchronized Execution). In order to support the synchronized execution model. we have also designed a broadcast, speculative file cache to provide scalable I/O performance. The paper reports our experimental results with several 3D applications on the display wall to understand the performance implications and tradeoffs of these methods.

Active networks allow computations to be performed in-network at routers as messages pass through them, Active networks offer unique opportunities to optimize network-centric applications in ways that are not possible using conventional networks. Unfortunately, the need to route packets at full network speed means that very little computation can be done per packet, per router This seriously restricts the range of in-network applications that can be developed. Computationally intensive applications are restricted to executing outside the network and thus many potential in-network optimizations are precluded. We propose a scalable cluster architecture using software Distributed Shared Memory. (DSM) that can be used as an "attached processor" at routers for executing active code. This novel application of DSM enables the construction of aggressive active net-work protocols by providing significant compute capacity outside the router's critical packet routing path. The use of DSM simplifies the implementation, and extends the capabilities, of the active packet execution engine in ways that a message passing cluster cannot. Further, the characteristics of active processing enable specific optimizations to consistency maintenance.
