This paper is concerned with the detection of actuator faults in nonlinear systems. With the theoretical development of sophisticated fault detection and isolation (FDI) approaches, the implementation of FDI algorithms is, however, often constrained by the available computational power. On the other side, in many practical applications, in order to avoid extra hardware and investment, FDI algorithms often share processor with control algorithms. There is a growing interest in the modeling and control of model helicopters using nonlinear dynamic models and nonlinear control. A helicopter is an underactuated system with fewer independent control actuators than degrees of freedom to be controlled, making the control difficult. Further, most of the models and control are derived for separate flight conditions such as take-off or hovering because of the complexity involved. This simplification in fact seems to make the problem more difficult since the simplified model might not have the properties associated with the original physical system. Analytical techniques based on Lyapunov theory are then used to design the controller and the design can become extremely complex. In this paper, we present a new nonlinear and adaptive controller design. The design methodology basically involves making the combined dynamics of the helicopter and the controller to resemble the dynamics of a nonlinear time varying electrical circuit having the required properties, using a process similar to reverse engineering. This conceptually simple procedure leads to a new general class of complex nonlinear and adaptive controller algorithms without the use of or the necessity for complex analytical tools, and hence can be understood and applied easily. Even though the solution provided here is for a particular flight condition, this approach can easily be extended to multiflight conditions.

ESA/ESOC is currently investigating the potential to introduce a higher degree of automation into the organisation's flight operations activities. A significant element of this process has been a study into analysing the operations of ESA's ENVISAT Low Earth Orbit Earth Observation mission launched on 1-Mar-2002. The current operations concept of this mission is supported by a level of automation on-board and in the control system and mission planning system sufficient to allow secure operations with close to 100% mission data return with the permanent presence of a single (shift) operator. This operator is also controlling the ERS2 satellite since visibilities do not occur in parallel. The objectives of the study was to analyse the potential to reduce the need for a permanent operator presence during visibility periods. For this purpose an analysis of existing nominal and some well-defined anomaly diagnosis and recovery procedures was performed. Automated execution of selected ENVISAT procedures (nominal and contingency recovery procedures) using the automation system and the MCS with the simulator was demonstrated successfully to a wider audience in ESOC. The paper presents the results of this demonstration and the lessons learnt from the study. It concludes with an outlook on the next, potential steps towards an operational system for the ERS2 and ENVISAT mission.

Batch control is characterized by procedural control that is realized according to operating procedures to accomplish tasks. However, operating procedure synthesis takes considerable time and effort as the complexity of a batch process increases. To solve the operating procedure synthesis problem, a modeling technique is needed to represent the concurrent dynamics of a batch process. This paper aims at developing a method to synthesize operating procedures and procedural controllers for batch processes. For this purpose, it first views a batch control system as a discrete event system and next uses hierarchical Petri nets to represent information about process, plant, and schedule. It then presents a method to synthesize operating procedures. It also discusses the verification of synthesized operating procedures and last presents a method to synthesize procedural controllers.

We have studied the deterministic dynamics of underdamped single and multiparticle ratchets associated with current reversal, as a function of both the amplitude and the frequency of an external driving force. We show that control of current reversals in deterministic inertia ratchets is possible as a consequence of a locking process associated with different mean velocity attractors. controlprocesses employing small perturbations on the frequency and the amplitude of the external force may be designed in view of the intermixed fractal nature of the domains of attraction of the mean velocity attractors. The range where each control parameter is capable of reversing the current is determined. Quenched noise has significant effect on the basins of attraction. In particular, with increasing disorder the direction of a packet of particles can be reversed, leading to disappearance or weakening of the negative velocity attractor. The influence of the mass of the particles is also considered in order to design control techniques capable of separating particles of different masses.
