Complex aerospace products such as satellites, missiles, and rockets have features like high complexity, strong dynamics, and frequent design changes during the design and manufacturing processes. Thus, data management throughout full life cycle of complex aerospace products is a challenge. However, the emergence of the concept of digital twins offers a new management model for full life cycle data management of complex aerospace products. To achieve data management at all stage from design to manufacturing of complex aerospace products, this paper proposes full life cycle data management method for complex aerospace products based on digital twins. Firstly, the evolution process of full life cycle data of complex aerospace products is analyzed from the perspective of the concept of digital twins. Based on this, a full life cycle data management model for complex aerospace products based on digital twins is constructed, and key technologies such as the workflow-based business process management system for the design-process-manufacturing of complex aerospace products and the construction of the digital twin model for the production quality management of complex aerospace products are broken through. On this basic, full life cycle data management system for complex aerospace products based on digital twins is developed, verifying the effectiveness of this method. Finally, the work of this paper is summarized, and the future research works is discussed.

Optimal experimental design for parameter precision attempts to maximize the information content in experimental data for a most effective identification of parametric model. With the recent developments in miniaturization and parallelization of cultivation platforms for high-throughput screening of optimal growth conditions massive amounts of informative data can be generated with few experiments. Increasing the quantity of the data means to increase the number of parameters and experimental design variables which might deteriorate the identifiability and hamper the online computation of optimal inputs. To reduce the problem complexity, in this work, we introduce an auxiliary controller at a lower level that tracks the optimal feeding strategy computed by a high-level optimizer in an online fashion. The hierarchical framework is especially interesting for the operation under constraints. The key aspect of this method are discussed together with an in silico study considering parallel glucose limited bacterial fed batch cultivations. Copyright (C) 2022 Thy Authors.

This paper presents modeling and prediction of the unknown dynamics from a variety of real-time operation data in complex physical processes or systems based on machine learning. More generally, this is a data-driven modeling approach based on physical knowledge at time of design and machine learning at runtime. The learning process may apply to the entire or partial system dynamics, while portions of the physical system dynamics may be known or given. The learned models together with the known physics-based equations can be widely used in control system design, for instance, as one component in a model predictive control (MPC) framework for integrated dynamic systems. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks are chosen here, because they have additional stored states resulting from the past output, and the state storage can be internally controlled subject to the network status itself. Such controlled states can be regarded as gated states or memory blocks in a neural network, and they serve as key components of the LSTM neural network in controlling the information flow throughout the network. This paper provides technical details about the concept of a LSTM neural network that can be used to model and predict energy production in renewable sources, battery state of charge, engine fuel use (or energy efficiency), or energy demand of the payload in aerospace or energy system applications. The most compute-intensive part of the learning algorithm is solving a nonlinear optimization problem to minimize the total error between the predicted and actual outputs. After updating the learned model and parameters, the LSTM model implementation may perform certain computational steps in parallel, so as to accelerate the computing. The model learning and prediction processes can be implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA - a reconfigurable parallel computing device), for instance, on NI's CompactRIO modules or PXI FPGA modules. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) mechanical circulatory pumps have been used as a therapeutic option for patients who have progressed to the advanced stage of left-sided heart failure (HF), which is a chronic condition that the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood out of the left ventricle as it should. This surgically implanted device supports the native heart to pump blood from the heart to the remainder of the body to keep the patient alive as a temporary therapy until a donor's heart is available or as a destination therapy. However, the pump speed of the LVAD is typically set in a constant mode and cannot be freely changed. To promote the clinical use of LVADs as a long-term treatment option, a physiological control system is required to adaptively adjust the pump speed in response to time-varying blood demand. To this end, a model-free adaptive control (MFAC) algorithm is developed in this work, which estimates the control parameter over time using the data of manipulated and controlled variables (i.e., end-diastolic pressure of left ventricle and pump speed, respectively). In addition, since hemodynamic parameters in the cardiovascular system change over time due to short-term autonomic nerve regulation, we further considered baroreflex regulation to improve control performance;baroreflex regulation is one of the key factors of human's hemostatic mechanisms. The performance of the physiological controller is investigated and validated with computer simulations, which shows that the LVAD can respond to constant and time-varying blood demand. The flocking motion control is concerned with managing the possible conflicts between local and team objectives of multi-agent systems. The overall control process guides the agents while monitoring the flock-cohesiveness and localization. The underlying mechanisms may degrade due to overlooking the unmodeled uncertainties associated with the flock dynamics and formation. On another side, the efficiencies of the various control designs rely on how quickly they can adapt to different dynamic situations in real-time. An online model-free policy iteration mechanism is developed here to guide a flock of agents to follow an independent command generator over a time-varying graph topology. The strength of connectivity between any two agents or the graph edge weight is decided using a position adjacency dependent function. An online recursive least squares approach is adopted to tune the guidance strategies without knowing the dynamics of the agents or those of the command generator. It is compared with another reinforcement learning approach from the literature which is based on a value iteration technique. The simulation results of the policy iteration mechanism revealed fast learning and convergence behaviors with less computational effort.

In this paper we analyze the control problem for a steam cycle that produces power by recovering waste-heat from gas turbines on an offshore installation. The waste-heat recovery unit is based on once-through steam generator technology. The main disturbances are large variations of the gas turbine exhaust gas flowrate and temperature. We analyze the effect of these disturbances on the operation of the steam cycle, specifically for the superheated steam pressure and temperature. We compare the performance of different decentralized control strategies based on standard PID-controllers and nonlinear feedforward. We consider floating pressure and constant pressure operation strategies. For steam temperature control we implement feedback, and feedback in combination with nonlinear input and output transformations for feedforward disturbance rejection. These transformations are based on the steady-state energy balance on the waste heat recovery unit, while for simulation purposes we use a high-fidelity dynamic model of the bottoming cycle designed to minimize the weight and volume. The outcome from this work can be used to propose control strategies for coordinating a combined cycle (gas turbine with a steam bottoming cycle) that can operate with large and rapid changes in power demand. With commercial space travel now a reality, the idea that people might spend time on other planets in the future seems to have greater potential. To make this possible, however, there needs to be flexible means for manufacturing in space to enable tooling or resources to be created when needed to handle unexpected situations. Next-generation manufacturing paradigms offer significant potential for the kind of flexibility that might be needed;however, they can result in increases in computation time compared to traditional control methods that could make many of the computing resources already available on earth attractive for use. Furthermore, resilience is a significant focus of next-generation manufacturing strategies, and one way to enable resilience for space manufacturing would be to have backup controllers available on earth. These types of considerations raise questions about remote control and monitoring, as well as privacy of the data involved in such practices, that must be considered. The development of reliable kinetic models of bioprocesses from data is a challenging task. In this work, a systematic approach to develop a kinetic model of bioprocess involving single biomass from concentration data is proposed without imposing any kinetic model a priori. The proposed incremental model identification approach decomposes the model-building task into a set of sub-tasks such as determining the yield coefficients and maintenance coefficient, specific growth rate structure identification, and parameter estimation. It is shown that the proposed approach allows identifying the mechanism of product formation. The proposed approach is applied to the microbial production of Hyaluronic acid (HA), an important biopolymer, using a recombinant Lactococcus lactis MKG6. An unstructured kinetic model is developed for the HA production from data. It is shown that HA production is a growth-associated process. Further, the specific growth rate of HA production is identified from a set of rate candidates. It is revealed that the specific growth rate in the HA production follows the non-competitive HA inhibition model. The parameters obtained by the incremental identification are further refined to obtain statistically optimal estimates using the simultaneous model identification. Validation of the identified kinetic model of HA production on new experimental data shows that the proposed approach leads to a reliable kinetic model with the optimal parameter estimates. In-plane longitudinal-bending composite mode linear ultrasonic motors are extensively used in precision positioning due to their compact structure and the elliptical trajectory motion generated by the stator, which directly drives the rotor for high-precision linear motion. The motion control, however, is highly complex due to multivariable coupling factors during the output process. This paper thoroughly examines the intricate contact process between the stator and rotor, as well as the influence of friction on output characteristics during actual operation. By employing the modal energy method, we derive dynamic equations for the stator, offering a more accurate representation of its vibration behavior. Furthermore, we analyze the friction behavior in the stator-rotor contact model, incorporating this nonlinear dead-zone behavior into the model equations. The contact forces between the rotor and stator are integrated into the dynamic equations, precisely describing the rotor's motion. This approach results in a dynamic model that accurately reflects the performance of standing wave linear ultrasonic motors, which is crucial for enhancing the non-ideal output performance of ultrasonic motor motion systems.

This paper focuses on the problem of on-ramp merging control under the cooperation of intelligent and connected vehicles. A decentralized collision-free control strategy is proposed for on-ramp merging control. Each vehicle in the virtual platoon constructed by all vehicles on the arterial road and the on-ramp is equipped with a spatial-dependent constraint following controller. Under nonlinear vehicle dynamics, the proposed controller is proved to be uniformly bounded, thus assuring that each vehicle can satisfy the safety requirements to avoid collision at any specific spatial location, especially at the most dangerous merging point. Compared with time-dependence, this spatial-dependence means much more stability because spatial conditions during the on-ramp merging process are more static and invariant. Finally, a simulation containing six vehicles with relatively extreme testing conditions is conduct to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that the spacing errors can converge to 0 with respect to varying spatial-dependent desired spacings. The spacing errors of the six vehicles are kept at a relatively low level with a maximum value of 3.0778m. The maximal acceleration is 0.6060 m/s 2 and the maximal deceleration is -1.4042 m/s 2. All vehicles can achieve collision-free safety for on-ramp merging with a smooth and non-saturated control input generated by the proposed controller. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
