Small power systems are often used in support of broader systems like factories, climate control, and electric warships. Aggressive operation of the power systems often creates power shortfalls, which can be studied and controlled by assigning a value of lost load. However, this formulation is typically not sufficient to cover the potential interactions between the power system and the "process controller" that supervises the overall system and creates the load demand. For example, if a load demand for a device is not met, it will re-occur rather than just disappear. This paper formulates a general partition of the system control into a process controller which proposes actions, and a power manager which provides feedback on the feasibility of those actions. The two modules communicate via a defined interface to agree on a set of feasible actions that best accomplish the tasks within the limits of a power system. An electric warship is used as an example to demonstrate this setup, which can he used to operate power systems and to generate representative load profiles for use in evaluating candidate designs.

This paper proposes an extremum-seeking regulator design based on a Lie bracket averaging technique for time-varying nonlinear systems in the presence of unknown time-varying disturbance dynamics. The approach adopts a post-processing output regulation method for the regulation of nonlinear systems to the unknown minimum of a measured objective function. The stability analysis demonstrates that one can achieve practical output regulation of the unknown optimum equilibrium. A simulation study demonstrates the ability of the proposed technique to solve very general output regulation problems in the absence of exact knowledge of the process dynamics, the disturbance dynamics or a corresponding internal model. Integral reinforcement learning control approaches with derivative weighting performance indices require full knowledge of dynamic models of the considered systems. These approaches do not provide straightforward solutions for underlying integral Bellman optimality equations. This urged for innovative online model-free processes with simple adaptation mechanisms. An online integral reinforcement learning control approach is developed herein for systems operating in uncertain dynamical environments. It employs a value iteration adaptation process to solve the underlying integral temporal difference equation accompanied by model-free optimal control strategies. The proposed approach is tested to control a flexible wing aircraft where the system dynamics are not required by the online learning process. The stability and convergence properties of the adaptive learning mechanism are formally proven before they are validated through numerical simulations.

Fermentation processes are biologically complex, multiple-input, multiple-output systems, and as such, selection of an adequate control strategy is often an elaborate task. The process and disturbance dynamics are easily oversimplified, and the controller design in such cases seldom yield adequate performance. In the present study, we developed a non-structured, dimensionless model of microbial fermentation production. Analysis and simulations show that scaling of a bioreactor model facilitates parameter estimation, yield a straightforward objective function definition, and promote control decisions with better performance. The results suggest that scaling of a bioreactor model enhances the performance of feedback control, producing higher concentrations, rates, and yields, three of the most important parameters in industrial microbial biocatalysis. Operations management techniques can benefit from integration of control theory methods when dealing with production and supply chain networks dynamics. In this context, we revisit a bond-graph based mathematical model that is able to capture the dynamics of multi-workstation production systems, and propose a state feedback control design to maintain work in process at desired levels. The closed loop performance of this real case inspired model was explored and simulations with the introduction of a disturbance in the production system were carried out. The proposed control design results in a disturbance-oriented behaviour that has advantages over pure push or pull systems commonly used in Production Planning and control (PPC). In the given case, the results revealed that the model can provide prescriptive capacity adjustments and can help to define appropriate reference levels for the work in process in dynamic production environments. © 2019 Dime Universita di Genova, DIMEG University of Calabria.

The present paper focuses on the cryopreservation process and particularly in the evaluation of the viability of the pineapple apex as a result of the cryopreservation process. Instead of a regeneration measure of the viability, we advocate here the use of electrolyte leakage measurements by conductivity and provide a control engineering perspective on this methodology. Conductivity measurement considerably reduce the time to evaluate the viability (to the order of days). It will be shown how this technique can be fine-tuned within a model based approach and bring the viability evaluation to order of hours. The main contribution of the present paper is the analysis of the electrolyte leakage technique in a dynamical systems perspective. Based on the collected data, we construct linear dynamical models for particular survival rates. These models will be subsequently used for the evaluation of cell viability. A particular technical aspect is related to the uncertainty description and the use of the dynamical evolution in the regression analysis of the viability. In this extended abstract, we outline an approach for security certification of products or services for modern commercial systems that are characterized by agile development, the integration of development and operations, and high dynamics of system features and structures. The proposed scheme rather evaluates the processes applied in development and operations than investigates into the validity of the product properties itself. We argue that the resulting claims are still suitable to increase the confidence in the security of products and services resulting from such processes.

Distributed parameter processes are challenging when it comes to modeling and control. Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), used for in-situ extraction and recovery of oil sands bitumen, is a large scale distributed parameter process. The analysis of control relevant properties like controllability and observability enables to address the problem of control of steam chamber growth and sensor placement. We present a data driven and computationally affordable technique to assess the controllability and observability of the SAGD steam chamber dynamics in a structural perspective by exploiting the underlying interaction amongst different regions of the reservoir. A reservoir simulator is used to gather the data, and density based clustering combined with Granger causality is used to develop a directed graph through which the structural controllability and observability of the SAGD process is characterized. This paper presents a detailed procedure and results for the sensor and actuator locations for partial and full controllability and observability to validate the discussed approach using the data acquired from the CMG-STARS simulator. Biotechnological processes are urged to become more flexible and sustainable in order to meet the challenges of modern society. Using renewable feed stocks for the production of value added products is one strategy to achieve sustainability. The challenges arising from the use of renewables are large compared to the commonly used resources. The concentration of nutrients in renewable feed stocks varies between batches and is not optimal in respect to the demands of the cells. The biological system adapts to this situation by changing the metabolic growth modes in dependence of the availability of nutrients in the media. Consequently, the process can run through multiple modes. Each switch of the mode results in a change of the system dynamics which effects the process performance. To overcome the challenges, we propose a model predictive control approach combined with a moving horizon estimator that takes directly the multi-mode nature of the process into account. It ensures optimal performance while guaranteeing that the constraints are met in each phase of the process.
