Iterative learning model predictive control (ILMPC) is an effective control technique for improving the performance of a batch process under model uncertainty and rejecting real-time disturbances. Industrial batch processes often have stochastic disturbance and noise and ILMPC cannot guarantee convergence for such systems. In this work, we propose a novel stochastic ILMPC that combines stochastic approximation with ILMPC algorithm. The proposed algorithm ensures the almost sure convergence property. In comparison with the ILMPC, the proposed control algorithm also shows better performance in terms of the tracking error. Nonminimum phase systems are presented in many industrial processes bringing some difficulties in their control scheme. In this paper we propose a methodology to tune multi-input-multi output proportional-integral-derivative controllers that deals this particularity. The controller design employed here is based in an attainable trajectory determination, for the nonminimum phase system, that considers performance and robustness metrics. Based on that, two different tuning procedures are proposed: an optimization problem, in the frequency domain, that involves nonconvex quadratic matrix inequalities with a linear matrix inequality restriction and a time domain optimization of the simulated system. The methods are an alternative for tuning this kind of system leading the process to the best operational scenario presenting stability, robustness and limited control actions. Mechanical ventilators are machines used to assist breathing and are widely used in research involving respiratory diseases. However, most of the commercial options available for small animals are limited when tracking ventilatory profiles such as desired air pressure or flow. Iterative learning control (ILC) is a control technique that aims to improve performance of systems with repetitive tasks by learning on previous executions. This study investigates the performance of an ILC algorithm applied on the problem of tracking pressure profiles associated with a commonly used ventilatory mode. We feedback linearize the ventilator system dynamics and design a PI controller and a simple ILC algorithm that satisfies convergence, stability and final error properties. We also consider a hypothetical periodic disturbance representing a possible leakage. We show that ILC alone is not suitable to replace a conventional feedback controller. Almost every day we read about new advances in self-driving cars and artificial intelligence. For autonomous driving, there already exist established standards with six levels describing the steps from driving without assistance to fully automated, i.e., autonomous driving. While many people and industries in particular the automotive industry believe that self-driving cars are feasible in the near future, one may ask how feasible full autonomy is in the process industry? Is it realistic to aim towards a fully autonomous chemical plant, and what does full autonomy even mean for the process industries? This paper introduces a definition of autonomy and corresponding levels of autonomy for the process industry. We start from an abstract definition of six autonomy levels that are applicable to various industrial domains, also illustrated by recent examples from different industrial applications such as mining or marine. Then, we discuss the applicability of this definition for process industry in a first step. In a second step of refinement, we also study some key autonomous features of process operations and give examples for the meaning of each autonomy level per feature. This work considers the control performance assessment (CPA) of networked control systems (NCSs) with random communication delays. Two kinds of communication delays are considered simultaneously: sensor-to-controller communication delay and controller-to-actuator communication delay. A closed-form solution of the linear time-variant (LTV) minimum variance (MV) control law is derived for this class of systems. Correspondingly, the MV benchmark value is calculated based on the achieved output with minimum variance. These results can be used for evaluating the potential improvement of control performance for NCSs with random communication delays. Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms have found limited success beyond simulated applications, and one main reason is the absence of safety guarantees during the learning process. Real world systems would realistically fail or break before an optimal controller can be learned. To address this issue, we propose a controller architecture that combines (1) a model-free RL-based controller with (2) model-based controllers utilizing control barrier functions (CBFs) and (3) online learning of the unknown system dynamics, in order to ensure safety during learning. Our general framework leverages the success of RL algorithms to learn high-performance controllers, while the CBF-based controllers both guarantee safety and guide the learning process by constraining the set of explorable polices. We utilize Gaussian processes (GPs) to model the system dynamics and its uncertainties. Our novel controller synthesis algorithm, RL-CBF, guarantees safety with high probability during the learning process, regardless of the RL algorithm used, and demonstrates greater policy exploration efficiency. We test our algorithm on (1) control of an inverted pendulum and (2) autonomous car-following with wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and show that our algorithm attains much greater sample efficiency in learning than other state-of-the-art algorithms and maintains safety during the entire learning process.

This paper presents a control architecture suitable for autotrophic cultivations in a stirred tank reactor feeding a gas mixture of H2/CO2/O2. Based on the employed multi-layer structure, for simple gas phase control no metabolic information of the strain is required. A MIMO-PI controller connected to an adaptive feedforward disturbance rejection based on a physical model allows for a gas phase feedback control. Thus, without further knowledge of the autotrophic strain, experiments can be run to generate data and develop a process model including strain specific biological details. Combining both layers, gas phase control and feeding trajectory optimization with the process model, results in a control architecture that is suitable for optimizing the process in a closed-loop. Batch processes are ubiquitous in the chemical industry and difficult to control, such that nonlinear model predictive control is one of the few promising control techniques. Many chemical process models however are affected by various uncertainties, which can lower the performance and lead to constraint violations. In this paper we propose a framework for output feedback stochastic nonlinear model predictive control (SNMPC) to consider the uncertainties explicitly, which are assumed to follow known probability distributions. Polynomial chaos expansions are employed both for the formulation of the SNMPC algorithm and a nonlinear filter for the estimation of the uncertain parameters online given noisy measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed SNMPC scheme was verified on an extensive case study involving the production of the polymer polypropylene glycol in a semi-batch reactor. In this paper, inverted decoupling control for two-input/two-output (TITO) processes is considered. Knowing that the design of the decouplers is based on estimated models of the processes, adjustments in the decoupling parameters may be necessary. Thus, a methodology of evaluation and redesign of the inverted decoupler is proposed. Simulation example are used to illustrate the methodology. Wastewater treatment is an essential process to ensure the good chemical and environmental status of natural water bodies. The energy consumption for wastewater treatment represents an important cost for water utilities. Meanwhile has the increasing fraction of renewable energy sources in the electricity market created the possibility of exploiting cheaper (and greener) electricity. This paper proposes model predictive control driven by stochastic differential equations and genetic optimization to prioritize aeration in periods with low electricity prices thereby reducing costs and empowering smart use of green electricity. This is without violation of legislation and equipment constraints. The method is tested with real plant data and electricity market prices to demonstrate efficiency and feasibility.
