In this paper we propose a new tuning rule called FOMRoT for integer PID and PI controllers. Based on a fractional order model, the devised tuning rule aims at providing a good performance in both set-point tracking and load disturbance rejection tasks, with a constraint on the maximum sensitivity. The comparison with other tuning rules which also deal with these trade-offs shows the effectiveness of the tuning rule, which can be applied with processes with different self-regulated dynamics without the need to change the structure of the considered model. Real application studies constitute a relevant part of academic plantwide control research, as they promote industrial awareness and ideally acceptance. Especially in the area of bio-based processes, few works have been documented. These processes are characterised by large uncertainties, batch-operated units, and time-delayed measurements, which ultimately results in comparably low levels of automation. This work features the application of a stepwise plantwide control structure synthesis framework to an industrial bio-based production plant. Firstly, this is to give an indication of whether plantwide control is apt for this type of process. Secondly, it highlights specifically where substantial challenges arise during the application. The paper deals with the control of a wastewater treatment plant designed for a 250,000 inhabitants city. In order to developed different control strategies a specific influent was defined. It is the influent from BSM1 calibrated according to the real data of the wastewaters collected from the wastewater treatment plant. Five control strategies were developed based on conventional controllers and compared to each other using the quality indicators specific to the wastewater treatment domain Finally, an optimal setpoint-based control method has been developed which takes into consideration a criterion based on two very important factors in the case of a large-capacity wastewater treatment plant: the cost of the biological treatment and the effluent quality. In wastewater treatment, ammonium removal is a key step which can be done biologically. One method is by coupling a partial nitritation with the Anammox process. The partial nitritation goal is to convert half of the ammonium into nitrite, so ammonium and nitrite can be later converted into dinitrogen gas by Anammox bacteria. To obtain a stable partial nitritation, ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) have to prevail over nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) so as to avoid further conversion of nitrite into nitrate. Two control objectives can be identified for partial nitritation: the repression of NOB and the regulation of the effluent to obtain the required nitrite to ammonium ratio. In this work, the equilibrium points of the partial nitrification process are analyzed to find operating conditions for AOB prevalence over NOB. Based on this analysis, a feeding strategy is proposed to regulate the effluent nitrite to ammonium ratio at the value required by Anammox. A multi-objective optimization methodology is presented to find optimal tuning values of model predictive controllers (MPC). The method uses an optimization layer above the controller that provides the prediction and control horizons and the weighting values of the objective function. The methodology uses a hybrid method: the goal attainment method and the variable neighborhood search. The first one allows minimizing the error between the closed-loop response and an output reference trajectory varying the weighting matrices until reaching the minimum multi-objective cost, while the second method varies the integer variables of the problem (prediction and control horizons) until finding the minimum horizons to obtain a desired closed-loop performance. The proposed method is tested in a benchmark process using a Generalized Predictive controller (GPC), showing satisfactory results. In this work, a dynamic model of a twin screw feeder, for continuous tablet manufacturing, has been developed. In particular, a First Order Plus Dead Time (FOPDT) model has been suggested. The delayed dynamics depends on operating conditions, equipment design and physical properties of the bulk solid. Model parameters are estimated by fitting the model to experimental data. Due to the nonlinear input-output relationships and the time delays involved, a Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC) is investigated to maintain an accurate mass flow rate, with the ultimate goal to improve product homogeneity in an inherently complex process. The performance of the designed control system is found to be satisfactory in a wide operating range and its potential use in a continuous manufacturing process is worth being investigated in the future. Chemical-looping Combustion (CLC) has recently emerged as a promising technology to curb CO2 emissions. The novelty of CLC resides on its inherent ability of avoid direct contact between the fuel and the air, while producing a highly concentrated CO2 stream. This study presents a dynamic modelling and controllability study that demonstrates the technical feasibility of a fixed bed CLC reactor to produce a constant high temperature air stream during the oxidation stage. The heterogeneous model, which considers mass and heat transport resistances in the oxygen carrier particle and the bulk fluid phase, was validated using data reported in the literature. Also, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to gain insight on system's behaviour. Furthermore, an optimal control problem was formulated to identify optimal control profiles that can improve the efficiency of this process. Combining empirical relationships with a backbone of first-principle laws allow the modeler to transfer the available process knowledge into a model. In order to get such so-called grey-box models, data-reconciliation methods and constrained regression algorithms are key to obtain reliable process models that will be used later for optimization. However, the existent approaches require solving a semi infinite constrained regression nonlinear problem, which is usually done numerically by an iterative procedure alternating between a relaxed problem and an a posteriori check for constraint violation. This paper proposes an alternative one-stage efficient approach for polynomial regression models based in sum of-squares (convex) programming Moreover, it is shown how several desirable features on the regression model can be naturally enforced in this optimization framework. The effectiveness of the proposed ap-proach is illustrated through an academic example provided in the related literature. This work demonstrates the swing-up of a custom-built spherical pendulum, which is mounted on the 7-axis industrial robot KUKA LWR IV+. The swing-up trajectory for this system with nine degrees of freedom is calculated offline in a three-step process: First, an optimal control problem for the pendulum model with fewer states and inputs is solved. Then, using the inverse kinematics of the robot model and the forward dynamics of the complete system, this trajectory is converted to a feasible starting solution for the third step, which is solving the optimal control problem for the complete system. Finally, the swing-up is shown experimentally using a twodegrees-of-freedom control structure comprising the calculated trajectory for the feedforward control and a time-variant linear quadratic regulator (LQR) as a feedback controller. An optimal multi-objective method for I/O pairing and multi-loop tuning of independent controllers is proposed and applied to five classical benchmarks From the classic I/O pairing methods, it is expected that only a few configurations result in acceptable control. However, it is verified that there is not an unique adequate pairing and that the controller tuning influences the final behavior as much as the I/O pairing, being the tuning and the pairing highly intertwined problems. Thus, an optimal tuning should be sought simultaneously with the best I/O pairing, and not after the pairing has been determined.
