The models of chemical and biological processes are typically composed of unknown and known parts. This paper recalls a multivariable control strategy that deals explicitly with the existence of incomplete models. The suggested strategy uses estimation of the unknown rates in the model and feedback linearization to achieve good closed-loop performance with simple tuning of design parameters and without the need of a complete model. The main contribution of this paper is the development of methods for quantitative analysis of the local stability and performance of the control strategy in the continuous-time case, based on a system description using transfer functions. An ADMM algorithm is proposed for selecting structurally constrained measurement combinations as controlled variables (CVs). The CV selection is based on the self-optimizing control principle, where the goal is to choose CVs such that the steady-state operation is optimized when they are kept at constant set-point. When CV selection incorporates structural constraints, it becomes a non-convex optimization problem and thus, finding the optimal solution is difficult. However, using an ADMM algorithm for a given measurement set together with specified structural constraints, a local solution can be obtained. The resulting CVs seem to give similar or better performance when compared to other existing methods. The proposed method was evaluated on case studies, consisting of a binary distillation column and an evaporator. Short term scheduling of multipurpose batch processes has received growing attention over past decades. It concerns the optimal allocation of a set of limited resources to tasks over time in order to enhance the revenue of plants. This paper addresses the short term scheduling of batch processes through a continuous-time mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation based on the state-task network (STN) representation that allows to consider multiple intermediate due dates for market requirements. The proposed formulation can be classified as a slot-based approach that views the time horizon as a set of ordered blocks of unknown and variable lengths. Compared to previous similar approaches, it is simpler and leads to a smaller mathematical model without decoupling tasks from units. A few benchmark problems are used to illustrate the computational advantages of the proposed optimization approach. This work presents the procedure used for the identification of the dynamic model of a 50 MW petrochemical furnace. This real system is responsible for the generation of thermal energy, necessary for the heating of the load currents of the processing unit of bituminous shale derivatives. The variability or instability of temperature control, airflow for combustion and fuel flow, may affect the results related to the efficiency of the petrochemical furnace. In addition to the financial losses, another relevant aspect is the impact on the environment, i.e., it is a variable that must be maintained within operational restrictions. Based on the problems highlighted, it is justifiable to invest in multivariable predictive control. For this reason, the identification and validation of the model is essential to the success of the performance of the predictive controller algorithm. In this work, all the steps to obtain the model of the multivariable process of the petrochemical furnace are presented. The model obtained was validated by analysis of computational methods and tools. The result of the validations shows that the identified model reflects with great accuracy the behavior of the actual plant, in this case the petrochemical furnace. This paper proposes changes to the Asymptotic identification method (ASYM): the use of high order models of different PEM structures with an optimal order, aiming to improve the numerical stability and the quality of the obtained models. Some changes are also proposed for the Error Bound Validation method, with the estimation of the model quality index as a function of the frequency, to allow a better evaluation of the identified models and to provide an easier diagnostic of problems in the identification procedure for a better design of reidentification experiments. This paper deals with the optimal control of a H-2 production system supplied by a photovoltaic solar energy and assisted by the grid. For that, we propose a simple dynamic model accounting for the main features of the system, where the electrolizer current is used as the control variable, and we obtain the control law that optimizes the grid energy consumption despites the solar energy variability. An important constraint on the obtained solution is the physical limits of the hydrogen storage tank, which results in a nonsmooth and noncontinuous problem. The Pontryagin's maximum principle is used to solve the boundary value problem and an explicit piecewise continuous control law is found. Preserving water quality along a river basin is a multi-factorial task that depends on the management of sewers, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and the dynamics of the river. This paper presents a control strategy of a reduced integrated network of WWTPs that can be used as a reference point for designing, evaluating and performing more complex strategies. The reduced network considers that the outflow of the sewers is gathered in one point from which it is distributed to three WWTPs that can treat and/or by-pass the wastewater into the river. The control strategy makes use of Model Predictive control (MPC) and global optimization tools, such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The single input is first divided into three via PSO (one inflow per treatment plant) with a further partition into six discharging parts (two per treatment plant). Two scenarios in rain period were evaluated to improve the quality of the river regarding the concentrations of ammonium and nitrites. Simulation results showed that the control strategy improved the mean and the transient conditions of both concentrations. This study proposes various routes to integrate a fossil fuel-based system, such as an oil-refinery, with bio-refining processes aiming to enhance industry productivity. This is particularly relevant due to the lack of adaptation of existing refineries to diminishing oil supply. Moreover, the integration of oil and bio-refineries has a massively positive effect on the reduction of CO2 emissions. The proposed integration structure connects the industries through routes such as on-site power generation, syngas production using refinery residue and bio-oil and other waste streams, utility systems, and utilising chemicals produced via biomass sources into the petrochemical and transportation industry as valuable products. Focusing on the latter route of integration, the upgrade of Acetone, Butanol and Ethanol (produced by sugar fermentation via bacterial species) has been chosen as a pathway to produce valuable products that could be used in both the chemical sector and the transportation industry. The reaction system consists of the self-condensation and cross condensation of alcohols and acetone using active metals on their corresponding basic supports as catalysts at high temperatures and pressure in a batch reactor. The proposed approach has resulted in the production of long-chain hydrocarbons suitable for the chemicals or transportation industry. Testing and validation of automated driving functions represent major challenges for automobile manufacturers and other stakeholders. Simulation of automated driving functions in a virtual world has the potential to accelerate testing and improve the quality of the optimization process. Among the many challenges in the urban context, a critical problem cluster involves the safety impacts of automated driving functions on vulnerable road users (VRU). Virtual assessment of safety impacts requires validated models of VRU behavior, particularly behavior related to “failure modes” and reactions in critical situations. Among VRU, there is an especially urgent need for data and models to describe the dynamics and behavior of e-scooter riders. A recent study performed by our group under laboratory conditions has provided data with implications for e-scooter stability, in particular the impact of hand signals and rear blind spot checks. It turns out that even novice e-scooter riders can successfully learn to maintain stability while performing these tasks. To understand the details of maintaining stability, a more profound understanding of the dynamical modes of the e-scooter, including the control and guidance process performed by the rider, would be of great utility, particularly to address the problem of realistic e-scooter models for simulations. To this end, more comprehensive e-scooter testing environments with enhanced sensor technology should be developed.

Industrial polymerization plants experience frequent changes of products, driven by end-use properties to meet various market requirements. Good transition policies are essential to save time and materials. In this study, the gas-phase catalytic polymerization is modeled in a fluidized bed reactor by a single-phase model and dynamic optimization is implemented to determine optimal operating sequences for grade changes. Two optimization formulations, a single-stage and a multi-stage formulation, are introduced and compared. The superiority of the multi-stage formulation is concluded owing to better control at each stage during the transition and a further reduction of off-grade time. Subsequently, an on-line optimal control framework is established by incorporating a shrinking horizon nonlinear model predictive control with an expanding horizon weighted least-squares estimator for process states and unknown parameters. The results of a case study indicate the designed framework is able to overcome certain levels of uncertainty, while reducing the transition time.
