This study presents a Filtered Model-based Predictive control method for the Fault Tolerant Energy Management of a sugarcane microgrid;such plant has several renewable sources (solar, wind and biomass power), being subject to different operational constraints and load demands. The proposed control policy ensures that these demands are met at every iteration, despite the presence of faults, coordinating which energy source to use, maximizing the use the renewables according to contract rules. The proposed predictive controller is synthesized with a fault-free model of the plant and coupled with a feedback low-pass Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) filter that is scheduled according to the level of faults detected upon the system. The nonlinear action of hybrid PI controllers makes possible to achieve almost none overshot with the smallest rise time possible (for the available input energy) and a settling time almost equal to the rise time. However, all of these nice properties require changes on the control loop. Our contribution is the proposition of a plug-in control action that can be added to the classical linear PI to avoid changes in the hardware, and still achieve the same behavior of a recently introduced adaptive hybrid PI controller. Our proposal is illustrated by real-time level control experiments in a nonlinear reservoir. Performance indexes are presented to evaluate the experimental tests. We address the problem of robust nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) under structural plant model mismatch in a multi-stage framework using a model-error model (MEM). Multi-stage NMPC models the presence of future feedback information in the predictions, hence it is less conservative than the other existing robust NMPC approaches. MEM consists of a stable linear model, an unknown nonlinear operator with bounded gain and a bounded additive mismatch. The computational burden of the proposed scheme is reduced by using two different approximations;1. Constraint tightened multi-stage NMPC 2. Tube-enhanced multistage NMPC. Both the schemes are real-time implementable with a small loss in performance when compared to the standard multi-stage NMPC. The advantages of the proposed schemes are demonstrated for a benchmark continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) example. This paper addresses a mixed integer linear programming model for the optimal utilization of municipal solid waste in a multi-echelon supply chain network. The model focuses on tactical and operational level decisions including the supply, production, and distribution. It aims to maximize the annual net profit by optimizing the choice of waste-to-energy technologies through observing the related capacity and environmental constraints and market demands. The proposed sustainable waste management model not only reduces the burden on the environment, but also optimally distributes the solid waste through the system and converts it into electricity, thus contributing towards energy supply. Sensitivity analyses are conducted to investigate the effects of changes in waste separation rate, energy conversion rate, and energy efficiencies on the system performance and on the environment. This work addresses the control of the inductor current in DCDC boost converter using a datadriven approach. Modelbased approaches tend to be either conservative or complex tasks when considering intrinsic non-linearities. In that sense, datadriven solutions to the control design of such processes come in handy as they do not need a plant model and, given a sufficiently rich experiment, all information needed from the system at a given operation point is obtained from data. Even for a specific datadriven method - in this work, the Virtual Reference Feedback Tuning (VRFT) there are different ways to implement it, which allow tuning of different controller structures. In this work, we compare and apply these approaches on the control of the inductor current in a DCDC boost converter directly on an actual plant and show that, for this kind of plant, the VRFT approach in which the inverse of the controller is identified along with the "derivative" pole outperforms the standard one. We present a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithm for semi-explicit index-1 stochastic differential-algebraic equations. It is natural to model isoenergetic-isochoric (constant energy-constant volume) flash processes with such equations. The algorithm uses the continuous-discrete extended Kalman filter (EKF) for state estimation, and it uses a single shooting method to solve the involved optimal control problems. It computes the gradients with an adjoint method. The isoenergetic-isochoric flash is also called the UV flash, and it is important to rigorous models of phase equilibrium processes because it is a mathematical statement of the second law of thermodynamics. NMPC algorithms for UV flash processes are therefore relevant to both safe and economical operation of phase equilibrium processes such as flash separation, distillation, two-phase flow in pipes, and oil production. We design the NMPC algorithm for disturbance rejection, and we therefore augment the state vector with the unknown disturbance variables in the continuous-discrete EKF. We present a numerical example of economical NMPC of a UV flash separation process. It involves output constraints and the estimation of an unknown and unmeasured disturbance. The computation time of the NMPC algorithm does not exceed 3.14 s in any of the 5 min control intervals. It is recommended that those with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus participate in physical activity. However, insulin management during and after exercise remains challenging for both patients and physicians. The artificial pancreas is a closed-loop system which aims to control blood glucose levels automatically however, with physical activity the system is unable achieve optimal glycemic control. In this work, two different strategies of announced and unannounced exercise are combined with a closed-loop algorithm to mitigate the risk of exercise-induced hypoglycemia caused by aerobic activity. In the announced strategy, patients must inform the system that they are planning to exercise, this allows the modification of various controller parameters and the suggestion of a controller calculated amount of carbohydrates before the onset of exercise. The unannounced strategy removes the need of exercise announcement and utilizes an algorithm to detect exercise and trigger a carbohydrate suggestion and changes to the controller parameters. Both strategies are evaluated in-silico using the UVa/Padova simulator, in a realistic scenario considering sessions of aerobic exercise with 60% of VO2max for a duration of 50 minutes. Results show that both strategies are able to reduce the occurrence of hypoglycemia events, with the unannounced strategy achieving better outcomes. To solve the unequal length problem of batch data for multi-stage batch processes, a moving window data alignment method based on Warped K-means (WKM) in latent space is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the Warped K-means is used for stage division of batch processes. To capture the data inherent characteristics, principal component analysis (PCA) is utilized to project the original data into low dimensional latent space. Then, in latent space, searching the points closest to reference trajectory in the moving window is carried out to realize the feature-based data alignment. Considering the practical cases that missing data exist in industrial processes, the data complementation is performed by linear or non-linear interpolation according to the trend of the trajectories. Eventually, the aligned batch data are applied to an optimization algorithm of batch processes to verify the validity of the proposed method. In recent years, research interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has been grown rapidly because of their potential use for a wide range of applications. In this paper, we proposed a vision-based detection and position/velocity estimation of moving obstacle for a UAV. The knowledge of a moving obstacle's state, i.e., position, velocity, is essential to achieve better performance for an intelligent UAV system specially in autonomous navigation and landing tasks. The novelties are: (1) the design and implementation of a localization method using sensor fusion methodology which fuses Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) signals and Pozyx signals;(2) The development of detection and estimation of moving obstacles method based on on-board vision system. Ultra-high power densities that are expected in future processors cannot be efficiently mitigated by conventional cooling solutions. Using two-phase vapor chambers (VCs) with micropillar wick evaporators is an emerging cooling technique that can effectively remove high heat fluxes through the evaporation process of a coolant. Two-phase VCs with micropillar wicks offer high cooling efficiency by leveraging a capillary-driven flow, where the coolant is passively driven by the wicking structure that eliminates the need for an external pump. Thermal models for such emerging cooling technologies are essential to evaluate their impact on future processors. Existing thermal models for two-phase VCs use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modules, which incur long design and simulation times. This paper presents a fast and accurate compact thermal model for two-phase VCs with micropillar wicks. Our model achieves a maximum error of 1.25 degrees C with a speedup of 214x in comparison to a CFD model. Using our proposed thermal model, we build an optimization flow that selects the best cooling solution and its cooling parameters to minimize the cooling power under a temperature constraint for a given processor and power profile. We then demonstrate our optimization flow on different chip sizes and hot spot distributions to choose the optimal cooling technique among VCs, microchannel-based two-phase cooling, liquid cooling via microchannels, and a hybrid cooling technique with thermoelectric coolers and liquid cooling with microchannels.
