The case of fluid flowing down a plate is applied in several industrial, chemical and engineering systems and equipments. The mathematical modeling and simulation of this type of system is important from the process engineering point of view because an adequate understanding is required to control important parameters like falling film thickness, mass rate flow, velocity distribution and even suitable fluid selection. In this paper we address the numerical simulation and mathematical modeling of this process. We derived equations that allow us to understand the correlation between different physical chemical properties of the fluid and the system namely fluid mass flow, dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity and specific heat and studied their influence on thermal diffusivity, kinematic viscosity, Prandtl number, flow velocity, fluid thickness, Reynolds number, Nusselt number, and heat transfer coefficient using numerical simulation. The results of this research can be applied in computational fluid dynamics to easily identify the expected behavior of a fluid that is flowing down a flat plate to determine the velocity distribution and values range of specific dimensionless parameters and to help in the decision-making process of pumping systems design, fluid selection, drainage of liquids, transport of fluids, condensation and in gas absorption experiments. © 2018, Danube Adria Association for Automation and Manufacturing, DAAAM. This work proposes a passivity-based approach to deal with the output-tracking-error problem for a large class of nonlinear chemical processes including non-minimum phase systems. More precisely, in that framework, the system dynamics is firstly written into the relaxing (pseudo) port-Hamiltonian representation which does not necessarily require the positive semi-definite property of the damping matrix. Then, a reference trajectory associated with a certain structure passing through a desired equilibrium point (i.e., the set-point) is chosen so that the error dynamics can be globally asymptotically stabilized at the origin thanks to the assignment of an appropriate damping injection. This method is subsequently illustrated for a benchmark of multiple reactions systems, namely Van de Vusse reaction system. The numerical simulations show the applications of the proposed approach. In this paper, a novel online Q-learning approach is proposed to solve the Infinite Horizon Linear Quadratic Regulator (IHLQR) problem for continuous-time (CT) linear time-invariant (LMI) systems. The proposed Q-learning algorithm employing off-policy reinforcement learning (RL) technology improves the exploration ability of Q-learning to the state space. During the learning process, the Q-learning algorithm can be implemented just using the data sets which just contains the information of the behavior policy and the corresponding system state, thus is data-driven. Moreover, the data sets can be used repeatedly, which is computationally efficient. A mild condition on probing noise is established to ensure the converge of the proposed Q-learning algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.

Numerous studies in the field of service robotics have been done. The use of wearable robots or exoskeletons has rapidly increased in the last decade, primarily focused on rehabilitation. Wearable robots use many type of actuators such as hydraulic, electric, pneumatic, among others;and different control strategies that determine its performance. This paper focuses on the design and experimental evaluation of a control strategy of a pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) for an exoskeleton application. The main advantage of this actuator is its high strength to weight ratio, however it has a low control accuracy. An incremental adaptive Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and a Proportional-Integral (PI) cascade controls were implemented in order to manipulate the degree of rotation of the joints of an exoskeleton limb and to overcome PAMs nonlinearity, hysteresis, and time varying characteristics. The concept of continuous-contact helical gear pumps (CCHGP) has been proposed and successfully commercialized in the recent past. Thanks to the continuous-contact rotor profile design and to the helical gear structure, this design eliminates the kinematic flow oscillation. This has important implications on the fluid borne noise generation, which is considered as one of the major sources of noise emissions and mechanical vibrations for positive displacement machines. Although the commercial success of the CCHGP concept, there is very little published studies about the underling physics at the basis of the functioning of this type of design. This is mostly due to the complexity of the fluid domain that characterize the functioning of CCHGP units. In this paper, a transient 3D CFD study is conducted for a reference CCHGP unit for high-pressure (up to 200 bar) fluid power applications. The results of the 3D CFD simulation are compared with those given by a lumped-parameter model developed at the Maha Fluid Power Research Center of Purdue University (USA), which was previously validated against experimental results. The results show how with a proper discretization of the fluid domain the CFD simulation approach can be used for the case of helical CCHGP units. Both models provide a good description of the main features of operation of the unit. The lumped parameter model is quicker, thus suitable for fast optimization studies. However, the CFD results not only can be used to support the main assumptions done on the lumped parameter model, they also permit to gain further insight on the operation of the CCHGP unit, particularly with respect to the flow features of the meshing process.

Vehicle developers face steadily decreasing development times and increasing system complexity. New control concepts like integrated vehicle dynamics control aiming to improve handling quality and ride comfort usually influence longitudinal, lateral and vertical dynamics at the same time. Therefore, holistic 3D vehicle dynamics and the accompanied research become more important. New tools and test methods are required to support and accelerate the research and development process. Today, two main possibilities exist to design, optimize and test the holistic 3D dynamics of a vehicle. One is through CAE and simulation, based on design data or results from component and subsystem test benches. The other is through track testing. Both possibilities are state of the art within the vehicle dynamics development process. With a new vehicle dynamics test system, the so called Handling Roadway (HRW) that will become available in 2018, IVK/FKFS will supply an alternative to track testing when it comes to evaluation of 3D dynamics of the real vehicle. The new HRW will enable a realistic overall vehicle response to control and disturbance input, featuring the well-known advantages of a fully controlled test bench environment. The new test system will be described in the next chapter. The intended role of the HRW in the development process is to provide an additional link between simulation and road testing as indicated in Figure 1. With the need for automatic control based supervisory controllers for complex energy systems, comes the need for reduced order system models representing not only the non-linear behaviour of the components but also certain unknown process dynamics like their internal control logic. At the Institute of Energy systems Technology in Offenburg we have built a real-life microscale trigeneration plant and present in this paper a rational modelling procedure that satisfies the necessary characteristics for models to be applied in model predictive control for grid-reactive optimal scheduling of this complex energy system. These models are validated against experimental data and the efficacy of the methodology is discussed. Their application in the future for the optimal scheduling problem is also briefly motivated. This work presents an optimization-based methodology for the placement and scheduling of measurement sensors and control actuators in spatially-distributed processes with low-order dynamics and discretely-sampled output measurements. Initially, a sampled data observer-based controller, with an inter-sample model predictor, is designed based on an approximate finite-dimensional system that captures the infinite-dimensional system's dominant dynamics. An explicit characterization of the interdependence between the stabilizing locations of the sensors and actuators and the maximum allowable sampling period is obtained. Based on this characterization, a constrained finite-horizon optimization problem is formulated to obtain the sensor and actuator locations, together the corresponding sampling period, that optimally balance the tradeoff between the control performance requirements on the one hand, and the demand for reduced sampling, on the other. The objective function penalizes both the control performance cost, expressed in terms of the response speed and the control effort, and the sampling cost, expressed in terms of the sampling frequency. The optimization problem is solved in a receding horizon fashion, leading to a dynamic policy that varies the sensor and actuator spatial placement, together with the sampling period, over time. The developed methodology is illustrated through an application to a simulated diffusion-reaction process example. Biotechnological processes still represent a challenge for process optimization and automation as the data landscape consists of unavailable, inaccurate, delayed or missing measurement information. As a first step towards automation of biotechnological processes, methods have to be refined for estimating the unknown states with an acceptable precision, using a mathematical model of the system. Due to the technological advances, knowledge and computational powers are constantly increasing so that models of a higher complexity and predictive quality are now available. Hybrid cybernetic models offer a flexible, yet detailed description of the biotechnological process under consideration. They connect the nonlinear system dynamics to the metabolic information of the organism and allow to consider cell internal regulations. In this work we explore if this class of models can be successfully applied for real-time process monitoring. We do this by evaluating the performance of two commonly used state estimators, an unscented Kalman filter and a moving horizon estimator, which both use a hybrid cybernetic model to observe the non-linear process of poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate production in the organism Cupriavidus necator. To obtain flow control of the molten metal in the mold where the initial solidification steps of continuous casting occur, a versatile electromagnetic actuator is required to enable both flow acceleration and stabilization to counteract different undesired flow phenomena. Various mold monitoring systems instantly give insights into the dynamics of the meniscus level, solidification status and molten steel flow characteristics during casting. An online mold flow sensor in combination with an electromagnetic actuator capable of applying time varying braking and stirring forces simultaneously, enable closed loop mold flow control with automatic handling of regular as well as sudden variations in the casting conditions in real time. A control package for the FC Mold G3, a combined two-level electromagnetic actuator with a brake in the bottom of the mold and a combined stirrer and brake in the top of the mold, reacting on varying macroscopic casting conditions has been used in steel plant production to minimize quality and operational issues. The control relies on predictions of the amount of surface defects based on experience and numerical simulations of the fluid flow. Plant quality results, collected during a year of full production, show a surface defect reduction of more than 50% with FC Mold G3 on critical ULC grades for exposed automotive body panels [1]. In the next step, real time information taken directly from process monitoring will dynamically control the FC Mold with further improved slab cleanliness and surface quality as a result.
