Timely and accurate information on crop growth and seasonal dynamics are increasingly needed to develop monitoring systems aimed to detect seasonal anomalies, support site specific management and estimate crop yield at the end of the season. In particular, frequent decametric information nowadays being provided exploiting the new generation of Earth Observation (EO) platforms are fundamental for farm level monitoring. This study presents an analysis aimed at fully exploiting dense time series of EO data derived from the combined use of ESA Sentinel-2A and NASA Landsat-7/8 imageries for crop phenological monitoring. Decametric Leaf Area Index (LAI) maps were generated for the year 2016 by inversion of the PROSAIL radiative transfer model with Gaussian process regression for a study area located in northern of Italy, and used to derive rice crop stages information by exploiting an adaptation of phenological algorithm. Preliminary results showed that occurrence of the main crop development stages can be estimated at parcel level with reasonable accuracy (7 to 15 days mean error depending on the phenological phase) and phenometrics analysis provide information in agreement with the different cultivated varieties and adopted agro-management practices.

Current inherently safer design strategies in the conceptual design stage focus on reducing the overall hazard of a process plant without considering the operability of the process. The process is first designed to be inherently safer with respect to a nominal, steady-state case. Then, after the process is designed, layers of protection are added and operability issues are addressed. However, this sequential design approach does not account for the impact of the design itself on the operability of the facility. A particular design may be safe with respect to its steady-state operation, but may suffer from operability issues. For example, an intensified process may contain less of a hazardous substance and thus be inherently less hazardous, but the design may restrict the controllability of the process, thus making the design have a higher risk and be more prone to loss. A considerable depth of research has been done to simultaneously optimize the design and control system of process plants, but no such approach has integrated inherent safety, only seeking to produce an economically optimal design rather than a safer one. The objective of this research is to implement a strategy to simultaneously design and control an inherently safer plant. The Parametric Optimization and control (PAROC) framework will be used as a basis to simultaneously design the plant and the controller. Different inherently safer design indices will be integrated into PAROC, and the operability, safety, and economic profitability of the results will be compared. An extensive literature review identified metrics by which controllability of a process plant can be identified and optimized along with the design, as well as inherently safer design indices that can be implemented into the PAROC framework. In order to drive highly automatically on public roads , lateral and longitudinal control has to be done by assistant systems. Until now the lateral and longitudinal control are by two separated systems. This simplifies the design procedure on the one hand but on the other hand it neglects the coupling between lateral and longitudinal dynamics. In this paper two control methods are introduced that are based on a nonlinear single track model which considers this coupling.

Many companies have used simulation techniques to improve their operations and generate process improvements for many years. Six Sigma has been developed as a disciplined approach and has introduced an alternative way of thinking about product or process improvement. The concept of combining the advantages of simulation techniques and Six Sigma’s methodology has recently led companies and academics to investigate and implement this strategy. The Six Sigma method, composed by the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and control stages, is a problem-solving method. However, it also identifies problems for which the approach may be ineffective. The objective of this study is to improve and control processes, reduce non-value-added activities and support decision-making by using Six Sigma’s methodology alongside AnyLogic;using agent-based, discrete event, and system dynamics models. Moreover, the paper explores a multi-method simulation as a guided tool to assist organizations with the decision to implement a Six Sigma approach and pinpoints the strategies to be adjusted and monitor the process’ parameters to be improved as well as reduce bottlenecks and weaknesses in the entire process by setting up management guidelines of such complex and dynamic process. This ensures that existing systems and proposed improvements account for any short and long-term outcomes. This paper begins with an overview of Six Sigma, followed by a description and the benefits of using the AnyLogic simulation package for implementing this methodology. This paper also shows the fundamental relationships between the Six Sigma methodology and AnyLogic simulation displaying a framework in which they can be integrated and a business case where this framework is used. The improvement and the strengths from this combination between Six Sigma and simulations are represented as preferable and capable enhancements to Six Sigma to deal with defects in many aspects. © 2017 Proceedings - 22nd International Co

In this paper, off-policy reinforcement learning (RL) is used to find a model-free optimal solution to the H_∞ output synchronization of heterogeneous multi-agent discrete-time systems. First, the output synchronization problem is formulated as a set of local optimal tracking problems. It is shown that optimal local synchronization control protocols can be found by solving augmented game algebraic Riccati equations (GAREs). The solutions to the GAREs require the state of the leader for all agents and the knowledge of agent dynamics. To obviate this requirement, a distributed adaptive observer is designed to estimate the leader state for all agents without requiring complete knowledge of the leader dynamics. Moreover, off-policy RL algorithm is used to learn the solution to the GAREs using only measured data and without requiring the knowledge of the agent or the leader dynamics. In the proposed approach, in contrast to other model free approaches, the disturbance input does not need to be adjusted in a specific manner. A simulation example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The dynamic process behavior of Engineering Design processes (EDPs) needs to be understood in order to distribute resources appropriately as well as for cost and schedule calculation. Currently, structural and behavioral modeling approaches are used in the context of EDP management. In many use cases, it is essential to have at hand both the static structural view and the dynamic behavioral one. Currently, however, the two modeling approaches cannot be sufficiently combined. Within this work, a framework for the structure-based System dynamics analysis of EDPs is presented. It uses structural models as a basis for constructing System dynamics models to simulate the process behavior and thereby supports understanding the correlation of process structure and behavior. This framework was iteratively developed by conducting case studies and consists of three layers, a five-step procedure and special support for the transformation of the models. For the validation, a subset of the design process at a large German commercial vehicle manufacturer has been chosen. Based on the application of the framework during a six-month project at the company, the industrial experts rated the framework as beneficial for the purpose of optimizing EDPs. Furthermore, they stated that the transparent representation of the sequence of the process, influencing factors and control variables in combination with the quantitative data had improved their understanding of the overall process. In multi-modular process architectures with independent but interacting sub systems, identification may not he the first choice at hand for closed loop control. A robust relay-based PID autotuning strategy is presented and validated on a quadruple tank system with non-minimum phase dynamics. The controller ensures a specified closed loop robustness, which is of great, benefit to the overall performance. The experimental results suggest that the proposed method fulfils the robustness requirement and performs well in various operating conditions of the testbench. A novel built-in test (BIT) design method for fault detection mid isolation (FDI) is presented, in which the test information extracted is maximized using parametric sensitivities derived by a system model. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate this approach. The first test focuses on fouling identification in an aircraft heat exchanger, in the presence of uncertain system inputs. The second example expands this method to a subsystem of an aircraft environmental control system (ECS) to calculate optimal conditions for component FDI. In this work an approach for thawing blocks of foodstuff, in particular fish, is introduced. The functional principle is based on plate freezer technology, which has been used in industry for decades. The aim of this work is to describe the temperature dynamics of this thawing process by means of partial differential equations (PDEs) and control the boundary conditions in an optimal way. The PDE describing the temperature dynamics is based on the diffusion equation with state-dependent parameter functions. In process industry, such as chemical, pulp and paper or petrochemical industry there are plenty of processes that require multivariable control. Classical control structures that handle this, for example cascade control, feedforward, ratio control, and parallel control have been used at least since the 1930s. Today, much focus in academia is on model predictive control (MPC). In this paper we discuss the comparative advantages and disadvantages of classical control structures and MPC.
