Aeration control by monitoring the microbiological activity using fuzzy logic diagnosis and control. Application to a complete autotrophic nitrogen removal reactor

Complete Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal (CANR) is a novel process where ammonia is converted to nitrogen gas by different microbial groups. The performance of the process can be compromised by an unbalanced activity of the biomass caused by disturbances or non-optimal operational conditions. This contribution describes the development of a fuzzy-logic based system for both diagnosis and control of a CANR reactor. Based on a combination of measurements of the nitrogen species concentration in the influent and in the effluent on the one hand, and insights into the activities of three distinctive microbial groups on the other hand, the diagnosis provides information on: nitritation, nitratation, anaerobic ammonium oxidation and overall autotrophic nitrogen removal. These four results give insight into the state of the process and are used as inputs for the controller that manipulates the aeration to the reactor. The diagnosis tool was first evaluated using 100 days of real process operation data obtained from a lab-scale single-stage autotrophic nitrogen removing reactor. This evaluation revealed that the fuzzy logic diagnosis is able to provide a realistic description of the microbiological state of the reactor with process engineering insight analysis. An evaluation of both the diagnosis tool and the controller was done by simulating a disturbance in the influent concentration. High and steady nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved thanks to the diagnosis and control system. Finally, development of the diagnosis and control as two independent systems provided further insight into the operation performance, gives transparency towards the operator and makes the system flexible for future maintenance or improvements. Distributed control is a computationally efficient and high performance approach for plantwide process systems, where the interactions between process units can be dealt with using the information exchanged among controllers. In this work we develop an approach to analyze distributed control systems where the controllers communicate at a rate lower than the sampling rate for the local process units. This is motivated by the observation that many chemical processes have plant-wide dynamics on a time-scale slower than that of the individual processes' dynamics. Based on the dissipative systems theory, this approach can be used to determine the impact of the reduced communication rate on the stability and control performance of the plant-wide system. The paper presents experimental results of fractional order noise identification process for the data obtained from a temperature sensor. The fractional order colored noise is a generalization of the traditional colored noise (noise with dynamic dependency) in the case when the dynamics of noise is a fractional order dynamics. Algorithm for determining the fractional order is based on information about noise self correlation.

Driver distraction strongly contributes to crash-risk. Therefore, assistance systems that warn drivers if their distraction poses a hazard to road safety, promise a great safety benefit. Current approaches either seek to detect critical situations using environmental sensors or estimate a driver's attention state solely from his/her behavior. However, this neglects that driving situation, driver deficiencies and compensation strategies altogether determine the risk of an accident. This work proposes to use inverse suboptimal control to predict these aspects in visually distracted lane keeping. In contrast to other approaches, this allows a situation-dependent assessment of the risk posed by distraction. Real traffic data of seven drivers are used for evaluation of the predictive power of our approach. For comparison, a baseline was built using established behavior models. In the evaluation our method achieves a consistently lower prediction error over speed and track-topology variations. Additionally, our approach generalizes better to driving speeds unseen in training phase.

It is well known that certain properties of the process dynamics can be deduced from steady-state information about a process only. In this paper we consider the dual problem, that of determining steady-state properties from process dynamics. In particular, we are concerned with the problem of determining extremum points in the steady-state input-output map from response data. This is a highly relevant problem in cases where the aim is to determine steady-state optimal operating conditions using real time process measurements. For this purpose, we first consider the connection between bifurcations of the zero dynamics and the steady-state input-output map. Based on these results;we show that steady-state optimal conditions can be determined from the process dynamics through consideration of local phase-lag properties of the process only. We demonstrate the usefulness of this result by showing that the of a chemical reactor can be located,without any prior knowledge, using sinusoidal perturbations and a phase-lock loop. In electrical power system dynamics, the single machine-infinite bus system is studied widely. This paper presents an analysis of the evolution of the state trajectories of a stochastic single machine infinite bus system. The dynamical equation of single machine-infinite bus (SMIB) system is called swing equation. That assumes the structure of a second-order ordinary differential equation. In this paper first, we add random fluctuations as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process noise in the dynamical equation of the SMIB system and then, we develop conditional mean and variance evolution equations, Finally, we simulate the resulting equations with a set of data. This paper will be of interest to power system dynamists, control theorists, electrical engineers, especially power systems Researchers looking for power systems and their control system under noise influence involving formal stochastic frame works. This white paper provides a perspective of the challenges, research needs, and future directions for control systems engineering in continuous pharmaceutical processing. The main motivation for writing this paper is to facilitate the development and deployment of control systems technologies so as to ensure quality of the drug product. Although the main focus is on small-molecule pharmaceutical products, most of the same statements apply to biological drug products. An introduction to continuous manufacturing and control systems is followed by a discussion of the current status and technical needs in process monitoring and control, systems integration, and risk analysis. Some key points are that: (1) the desired objective in continuous manufacturing should be the satisfaction of all critical quality attributes (CQAs), not for all variables to operate at steady-state values;(2) the design of start-up and shutdown procedures can significantly affect the economic operation of a continuous manufacturing process;(3) the traceability of material as it moves through the manufacturing facility is an important consideration that can at least in part be addressed using residence time distributions;and (4) the control systems technologies must assure quality in the presence of disturbances, dynamics, uncertainties, nonlinearities, and constraints. Direct measurement, first-principles and empirical model-based predictions, and design space approaches are described for ensuring that CQA specifications are met. Ways are discussed for universities, regulatory bodies, and industry to facilitate working around or through barriers to the development of control systems engineering technologies for continuous drug manufacturing. Industry and regulatory bodies should work with federal agencies to create federal funding mechanisms to attract faculty to this area. Dissipativity theory is an effective tool for system analysis and control design for network systems. Differential dissipativity is an extension of dissipativity achieved by lifting storage functions and supply rates to the tangent bundle. This paper extends differential dissipativity to the high order derivatives of the displacement of external variables. It allows for a more detailed description of nonlinear systems dynamics in terms of dissipativity, which can result in less conservative stability and performance conditions. it can be regarded either as a nonlinear extension of quadratic differential form (QDF) dissipativity for linear systems, or an extension of differential dissipativity to more detailed supply rates. Important features of dissipativity such as the determination of supply rate and storage function, stability conditions for open systems and interconnections for networked dynamics are investigated. Predictive PDF control in shaping Of molecular weight distribution based on a new modeling algorithm

The aims of this work are to develop an efficient modeling method for establishing dynamic output probability density function (PDF) models using measurement data and to investigate predictive control strategies for controlling the full shape of output PDF rather than the key moments. Using the rational square-root (RSR) B-spline approximation, a new modeling algorithm is proposed in which the actual weights are used instead of the pseudo weights in the weights dynamic model. This replacement can reduce computational load effectively in data-based modeling of a high-dimensional output PDF model. The use of the actual weights in modeling and control has been verified by stability analysis. A predictive PDF model is then constructed, based on which predictive control algorithms are established with the purpose to drive the output PDF towards the desired target PDF over the control process. An analytical solution is obtained for the non-constrained predictive PDF control. For the constrained predictive control, the optimal solution is achieved via solving a constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The integrated method of data-based modeling and predictive PDF control is applied to closed-loop control of molecular weight distribution (MWD) in an exemplar styrene polymerization process, through which the modeling efficiency and the merits of predictive control over standard PDF control are demonstrated and discussed. Fed-batch cultures of hybridoma cells are commonly used for the production of monoclonal antibodies (MAb). In this study, a simple macroscopic model of the cell culture is used, which is based on the overflow metabolism paradigm. This allows to specify optimal culture conditions, and the natural formulation of a nonlinear model predictive control strategy (NMPC). As not all the component concentrations are available for measurement, system observability is analyzed, and an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is designed, which provides satisfactory estimates of glucose and glutamine concentrations. Robustness of the NMPC scheme is investigated, as well as the combined UKF+NMPC scheme, through a minimax robust version and the closed-loop system. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
