The increasing request for speed and efficiency in today's Fashion and Apparel Retail Supply Chains, is adding more and more complexity to the system which asks for high product, availability and quick response to always changing market demand. In this context, using System Thinking approach, this paper aims at developing a Causal Loop Diagram for the definition of the cause and effect relationships between the several variables which define the system under exam. Being time a crucial variable in this field, in fact, dynamic complexity arises due to interaction of agents over time and evolving situations. In this context, our work highlights and analyses all the conflicting requirements that must be accurately evaluated and balanced in order to effectively manage the complex network of retailers and to help the decision making process behind the purchasing, delivery and replenishment steps. This paper presents an integrated approach for the optimization and control of heat-exchanger networks (HENs) that are managed proactively, where both renewable energy generation and time-varying electricity pricing are considered in calculating the utility cost and revenues. A real-time optimization strategy is carried out to deal with the resulting variability in energy resource availability and costs. The heat-exchanger super structures are first defined where transitions between the included HEN substructures are assumed to be instantaneous. The optimal configurations are sent to the local controllers as structural set points to be implemented. The explicit nonlinear models of heat exchangers built in Aspen Plus are adopted to describe the dynamic behaviors of the HENs. The dynamic models are incorporated not only for simulating the local control scheme but also the supervisory level to account for the structural transitions that incur operational and possibly capital costs. An observer-based robust control strategy is proposed for controlling overflow metabolism cultures operated in fed-batch mode. In order to maximize the biomass productivity, the controller is designed to regulate the inhibitory by-product concentration at small levels keeping the substrate concentration close to its critical level. To this end, a reduced order nonlinear model of the bioprocess dynamics is obtained and a partial feedback linearizing strategy is applied. The resulting free linear dynamics is designed by means of a convex optimization problem aiming at, mitigating the effects of non canceled nonlinearities and model uncertainties. An adaptive extended Luenberger observer is also designed for estimating;the by-product concentration from the measurements of biomass and substrate concentrations. Realistic numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed observer based robust control strategy is able to maximize the biomass concentration despite large disturbances on the measurements (30 % for substrate and 15 % for biomass concentrations). In this contribution, original service-oriented form of structure dynamics control (SDC) and a model for dynamic scheduling of services for Industry 4.0 supply networks is developed. Problem of design and dynamic scheduliiv, of services in cyber-physical systems is stated and solved with the help of SDC, approach. The proposed service-oriented description makes it possible simultaneously to (i) determine the volume of information services needed for physical supply processes, (ii) determine this volume in monetary form, and (iii) interconnect each service with information systems needed for its realization. The results provide a base for performing service scheduling according to actual physical process performance and their adaptation (re-configuration) as well as for monetary estimation of investments into information systems and return on investments. In this work, we discuss a recently proposed approach for supervised dimensionality reduction, the Supervised Distance Preserving Projection (SDPP) and, we investigate its applicability to monitoring material's properties from spectroscopic observations. Motivated by continuity preservation, the SDPP is a linear projection method where the proximity relations between points in the low-dimensional subspace mimic the proximity relations between points in the response space. Such a projection facilitates the design of efficient regression models and it may also uncover useful information for visualisation. An experimental evaluation is conducted to show the performance of the SDPP and compare it with a number of state-of-the-art approaches for unsupervised and supervised dimensionality reduction. The regression step after projection is performed using computationally light models with low maintenance cost like Multiple Linear Regression and Locally Linear Regression with k-NN neighbourhoods. For the evaluation, a benchmark and a full-scale calibration problem are discussed. The case studies pertain the estimation of a number of chemico-physical properties in diesel fuels and in light cycle oils, starting from near-infrared spectra. Based on the experimental results, we found that the SDPP leads to parsimonious projections that can be used to design light and yet accurate estimation models. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This paper aims at presenting the efficiency of the Linear Parameter Varying method for vehicle dynamics control, in particular when some actuators may be in failure. The case of the suspension actuators failure and braking actuators failure are presented. The main objective is to enhance the vehicle dynamics even with faulty actuators through the suspension control (for comfort and road holding improvements) and the braking/steering control (for road handling and safety). Indeed, the LPV/H∞ fault tolerant MIMO gain-scheduled Vehicle Dynamic control (VDSC) involves the steering actuators, rear brakes and four suspension systems, and aims at enhancing the yaw stability, lateral and vertical car performances (see Poussot-Vassal et al. (2011b), Doumiati et al. (2013)). This strategy is scheduled by 3 varying parameters (ρb,ρs and ρl). These parameters depend on a special monitoring system defined to evaluate the impact of braking/suspension actuator failures on the vehicle dynamical performances. The proposed LPV control structure then allows to handle such failures by an online adaptation of the control input distribution. Simulation results performed on a nonlinear model experimentally validated on a vehicle Renault Mégane Coupé MIPS (Mulhouse) subject to critical driving situations show that the proposed methodology is effective and robust. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. The paper proposes a set-based analysis of steering and braking actuator integration in order to improve the reconfiguration strategy of lateral vehicle control. The purpose is to examine the improvement possibilities of the stabilization abilities through actuator integration. The results are applied to the theoretical basis of the actuator selection strategy in the reconfigurable control. In the analysis the computation method of the maximum controlled Invariant Sets based on the nonlinear Sum-of-Squares (SOS) programming is used. The analysis considers the nonlinear characteristics of the tyre, the velocity and the tyre-road conditions which significantly determine the stability regions in the lateral dynamics. Thus, the resulting sets provide information about the stabilization abilities of the actuators for the entire vehicle system. The examination of the integrated actuation in the reconfiguration strategy is illustrated through various vehicle manoeuvres. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Due to ever-challenging global marker, conditions, plant economic optimization is becoming more critical. Recent advances have transformed the traditional steady-state real-time optimization (RTO) system of plant economic optimization to dynamic real-time optimization (DRTO) based on a dynamic prediction model. DRTO strategies that have been proposed perform economic optimization in an open-loop fashion without raking into account the presence of the plant control system. In this work, we propose a bilevel programming formulation for DRTO that includes effects of the closed-loop dynamics of an underlying constrained model predictive controller (MPC). The bilevel program is subsequently reformulated and solved as a single-level mathematical program with complementarity constraints (MPCC). We investigate the economics and control performance of the proposed strategy under varying MPC controller design parameters, and compare them to open-loop DRTO and rigorous multilevel closed-loop DRTO approaches.
