In this work, we discuss a recently proposed approach for supervised dimensionality reduction, the Supervised Distance Preserving Projection (SDPP) and, we investigate its applicability to monitoring material's properties from spectroscopic observations. Motivated by continuity preservation, the SDPP is a linear projection method where the proximity relations between points in the low-dimensional subspace mimic the proximity relations between points in the response space. Such a projection facilitates the design of efficient regression models and it may also uncover useful information for visualisation. An experimental evaluation is conducted to show the performance of the SDPP and compare it with a number of state-of-the-art approaches for unsupervised and supervised dimensionality reduction. The regression step after projection is performed using computationally light models with low maintenance cost like Multiple Linear Regression and Locally Linear Regression with k-NN neighbourhoods. For the evaluation, a benchmark and a full-scale calibration problem are discussed. The case studies pertain the estimation of a number of chemico-physical properties in diesel fuels and in light cycle oils, starting from near-infrared spectra. Based on the experimental results, we found that the SDPP leads to parsimonious projections that can be used to design light and yet accurate estimation models. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Responding to a scalable production system in a make-to-order environment requires increased effective decisions. This paper considers challenges brought by lead time existed in a multiproduct multi-stage manufacturing system when making a short-term production planning The order based production routes enhance the production flexibility, and in the meanwhile complicate the decision-making for each production stage. We define a series of sets to aggregate the production route and then model the problem as a mixed integer linear program (MILP) problem The model seeks to find optimal production lots with several practical extensions. To efficiently capture the production dynamics induced by, the lead times and setup, the production planning is implemented on a rolling horizon basis. The model is divided into several sub-problems as the horizon is rolled forward, of which a fix-and-relax strategy is applied. On-line parameter tracking in near-real time is a good alternative for advanced FDD/FTC systems, because an updated model is often a prerequisite for many indirect adaptive control algorithms. For aircraft, monitoring and reconfiguring is beneficial to impaired airplanes, but also to under-equipped vehicles (UAS, small airplanes). Otherwise, many schemes have been proposed since the 80s to deal with the tricky problem of on-line estimation. However, their computational complexity is often incompatible with the constraints resulting from onboard implementation and A/C certification issues. Accordingly, this paper capitalizes on the reliable but simple enough U-D factorization algorithm, and proposes an extended version that includes multiple forgetting factors to adapt to possibly different parameter rates of change. After a detailed description of the algorithm, the approach is applied to an academic benchmark chosen to enable the comparison of different methods in realistic conditions, with and without excitation. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This work studies the dynamic relationship between the electrical activity produced in skeletal muscles and recorded using electromyogram(EMG), and torque at the healthy human ankle during isometric contractions. Subjects were instructed to voluntarily modulate their ankle torque by tracking a pseudo-random visual command signal. Impulse response functions (IRF) estimated between the EMG and torque records had an unphysiological anticipatory component suggesting that the estimated IRF was biased because the data were recorded in closed-loop. Applying a closed-loop identification algorithm that modeled the EMG-torque relation as a nonparametric impulse response function, and the noise as an autoregressive-moving-average process gave unbiased results. The EMG-torque IRE had second-order, low-pass, dynamics, whose properties varied with the mean torque. (C) 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. In general, the control of chemical processes that involve unknown disturbances presents interesting challenges. Research issues have been focused on detailed modelling of the involved phenomena in order to use e.g. robust on-line disturbance compensation procedures or attempting to cancel out the disturbance effect in the feedback control of the chemical system. However, the chemical modelling problem can remain a very difficult challenge due to the unknown or partially-known dynamics occurring in the process under investigation. Therefore, this article proposes a new approach to the disturbance compensation, which is recasted into the theory of robust fault estimation. The disturbances acting in the system can be thus viewed as faults with time-varying characteristics to be estimated and compensated within an output feedback fault-tolerant control scheme. In this way, the limitations arising from the use of model-based approaches are obviated. The unknown input estimation problem is hence embedded inside a control system with required stability and performance robustness. This can be a significant advantage over model-based unknown input compensation methods, in which the detailed modelling of the disturbance term can be essential, and for which robustness with respect to its characteristics is difficult to achieve using purely nonlinear modelling strategies. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. This paper addresses the problem of detecting and isolating faults in the angle -of-attack (AoA) measurements, when the faulty sensors outnumber the healthy ones. Such a scenario hinders the applicability of heuristic-based techniques, such as voting schemes. Rather than including additional sensors, which would increase payload and system complexity, the solution adopted herein takes advantage of the knowledge on the dynamics of the aircraft, modeled by a linear fractional transformation (LFT), to detect and isolate faults. This approach is used to minimize the impact of the faulty sensors on the control performance of the vehicle, by feeding the controller with the compensated measurement. An integrated design solution is adopted based on μ-synthesis, thus directly addressing the issue of model uncertainty. Simulation results are presented obtained from a very high-fidelity Airbus industrial simulator. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Intelligent mechatronic systems offer the possibility to adapt system behavior to current dependability. This can be used to assure reliability by controlling system behavior to reach a pre-defined lifetime. By using such closed loop control, the margin of error of useful lifetime of an individual system is lowered. It is also possible to change the pre-defined lifetime during operation, by adapting system behavior to derate component usage. When planning maintenance actions, the remaining useful lifetime of each individual system has to be taken into account. Usually, stochastic properties of a fleet of systems are analyzed to create maintenance plans. Among these, the main factor is the probability of an individual system to last until maintenance. If condition-based maintenance is used, this is updated for each individual system using available information about its current state. By lowering the margin of error of useful lifetime, which directly corresponds to the time until maintenance, extended maintenance periods are made possible. Also using reliability-adaptive operation, a reversal of degradation driven maintenance planning is possible where a maintenance plan is setup not only according to system properties, but mainly to requirements imposed by maintenance personnel or infrastructure. Each system then adapts its behavior accordingly and fails according to the maintenance plan, making better use of maintenance personnel and system capabilities at the same time. In this contribution, the potential of maintenance plan driven system behavior adaptation is shown. A model including adaptation process and maintenance actions is simulated over full system lifetime to assess the advantages gained. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Several methods to derive the propagation path of a disturbance in process plants are applicable only to systems whose measurements are all available with the same sampling rate. This paper proposes a multi-rate method to identify the propagation path when measurements have different sampling rates. This is relevant for including in the analysis fast-sampled measurements from electromechanical equipment. The method is based on non-linear mutual prediction, which yields the directionality in the relationship between two time series. The method was demonstrated and validated, giving the expected outcome in an experimental case study, in which the root cause and propagation path of the disturbance were known. © 2015, IF AC (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd.
