In a typical air separation unit (ASU) utilizing either a simple gaseous oxygen (GOX) cycle or a pumped liquid oxygen (PLOX) cycle, the flowrate of the liquid nitrogen stream connecting the high-and low-pressure columns has a major impact on the total oxygen yield. It is shown that this yield reaches a maximum at a certain optimal flowrate of LN2 stream, creating a challenging feedback controller design problem. To dynamically maximize the oxygen yield while the ASU undergoes a load-change and/or a process disturbance, a multiple model predictive control (MMPC) algorithm is proposed. It is shown that at any operating point of the ASU, the MMPC algorithm, through model-weight calculation based on plant measurements, naturally and continuously selects the dominant model(s) corresponding to the current plant state, while making control-move decisions that approach the maximum oxygen yield point. This dynamically facilitates less energy consumption in form of compressed feed-air compared to a simple ratio control during load-swings. In addition, since a linear optimization problem is solved at each time step, the approach involves much less computational cost than a model predictive controller (MPC) based on a first-principles model. © IFAC.

This paper presents a new structure for path following control that allows multirotor UAVs to fly on predefined paths with high velocity. In contrast to pure trajectory tracking, it prioritizes spatial over temporal errors in case of actuator saturation. Path generation is achieved by a unit quaternion curve and an associated parallel transport frame in an interactive process, which leads to feasible paths of class C3. The suggested control approach is composed of a nonlinear dynamic inversion trajectory controller and a path-based reference model with in-flight adjustable path velocity. By adopting the concept of pseudo control hedging, the tangential path progression is slowed down to the physically reachable velocity. Yaw rotation remains as an additional degree of freedom. Experimental flight tests are performed on a quadrotor with GPS receiver and low cost inertial sensors for state estimation. They demonstrate high velocity path following in the presence of thrust saturation, external disturbances and modeling uncertainties. © IFAC.

Falling film evaporators (FFE) are widely used in the dairy industry to pre-concentrate milk for powder production. FFE control is, however, not performed well, with many plants still under operator or proportional and integral (PI) control. Several authors have created fundamental models to use for controller development, yet these models have various differences in structure and span feed flow rates ranging from laboratory scale (2 500kg/h) to industrial scale (27 000kg/h). This paper used a single semi-empirical model developed by Haasbroek (2013) to offer a sensible comparison of the most often seen dairy FFE controllers. Disturbance rejection was tested by introducing a feed dry mass fraction (WF) step and then comparing the product dry mass fraction (WP) increase as a percentage (AWP/AWFx100). It was found, as shown in figure 7, that linear quadratic (LQR) control (Haasbroek et al., 2013) and fuzzy predictive controllers showed the best performance (70% and 69% respectively), followed by cascade control (77%) and lastly PI control (123%). The fuzzy controller does, however, struggle with disturbances it has not been tuned for, while cascade and LQR controllers still perform well, as seen in figure 8. Taking into account the involved design required for LQR control, cascade control offers a well balanced approach to FFE disturbance rejection. © IFAC.

In this paper, we develop a novel Model Predictive controller (MPC) based on soft output constraints for regulation of a cement mill circuit. The MPC is first tested using cement mill simulation software and then on a real plant. The model for the MPC is obtained from step response experiments in the real plant. Based on the experimental step responses an approximate transfer function model for the system is identified. The performance of the MPC in the real plant compares favorably to the existing control system based on fuzzy logic. Compared to the other controllers, soft MPC handles the real time uncertainties effectively. It also regulates the cement mill circuits better and in a plant friendly way by using less variation in the manipulated variables (MVs). © IFAC.

Multi-stage spray drying is an important and widely used unit operation in the production of food powders. In this paper we develop and present a dynamic model of the complete drying process in a multi-stage spray dryer. The dryer is divided into three stages: The spray stage and two fluid bed stages. Each stage is assumed ideally mixed and described by mass-and energy balances. The model is able to predict the temperature, the residual moisture and the particle size in each stage. process constraints are also proposed to predict deposits due to stickiness of the powder. The model predictions are compared to datasets gathered at GEA process Engineering's test facility. The identified grey-box model parameters are identified from data and the resulting model fits the data well. The complexity of the model has been selected such that it is suitable for development of real-time optimization algorithms in an economic optimizing MPC framework. © IFAC.

This paper presents an effective and robust structure for the estimation and control of perfusion cell cultures, in which the cells and glucose concentrations are simultaneously controlled by manipulating the dilution and bleed rates. Firstly, a partially linearizing feedback controller is designed to ensure an approximately linear decoupled dynamics between the controlled outputs and the manipulated inputs. Then the model of the inner loop is used to design an extended Kalman filter, which estimates all the system states used in the implementation of the linearizing feedback control law from the (possibly noisy) measurements of cells and glucose concentrations. Two PI controllers are used in the outer loop for a good tracking performance, which are tuned using a receding horizon optimization procedure. The proposed structure shows good performance and robustness with respect to parameter uncertainties, non-cancelled nonlinearities and measurement noise. © IFAC.

This paper presents the process used by ENEL in order to optimize the tasks of scheduling, controlling and operating of multi-reservoir systems within the Italian energy market. The process described below is divided in three steps: definition of the constraints, real time operation and real time actuation. On the whole, the process covers a timeframe that begins up to 14 days before the day of delivery and ends with real-time actuation. Each step is characterized by a proper optimization process with different description of the objective function, constraints and with a different focus on the time horizon to be evaluated.

In this paper, a new statistical process analysis and quality prediction method is proposed for multiphase batch processes. A two-level phase division algorithm is designed to capture and trace quality-related inner-phase evolution which in general goes through three statuses sequentially, i.e., transition, steady-phase and transition. Partial least squares (PLS), canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and qualitative trend analysis (QTA) are effectively combined to distinguish different inner-phase process statuses. Their different characteristics are then analyzed respectively for regression modeling and quality analysis. Meanwhile, the uneven-length problem of batch processes is handled in different inner-phase parts so that online quality prediction can be performed at each time. The application to the injection molding process illustrates the feasibility and performance of the proposed algorithm. © IFAC.

The moving horizon estimator (MHE) formulation utilizes a window of measurements to compute the estimates of the states in that particular window. This approach leads to smoothing of the state estimates included in the window, since future information is used to compute the same. However, the effect of smoothing, in the MHE algorithm, on the state estimates has not been studied in the literature. In this work the performance of the MHE is compared with recursive Bayesian state estimators (such as UKF, EnKF) to study the effect of the moving window of the past data on the quality of state estimates, via an application on a benchmark pH simulation case study. The simulations are carried out for two scenarios-the ideal case and the case with a parametric model-plant mismatch. The results obtained indicate that the use of MHE results in improved state estimates when compared to the recursive Bayesian state estimators, but does not help compensate for model-plant-mismatch. © IFAC.

The paper presents main features of a performance monitoring system, which, in addition to variables normally registered in industrial plants (controller output OP, controlled variable PV and setpoint SP), makes use of additional variables made available by intelligent instrumentations and field bus communication systems. Experimental runs on a pilot plant scale have been carried out in order to introduce different types of valve malfunctions and to define suitable indices (KPI) able to diagnose them. Subsequently, threshold values for the indices have been calibrated and a logic has been developed to assign different performance grades. It is shown how the Travel Deviation allows specific evaluation of valve status and to detect different causes of malfunctioning. The same logic is implemented in an advanced release of an existing performance monitoring system and advantages in the accuracy of diagnosis are shown. Finally the system has been successfully validated by online implementation for control loops assessment of an industrial power plant. © IFAC.
