A generic signal-processing technique is described that enables computer-simulation studies, and practical hardware-implementation, of “real-time-determined” changes/updates in the “real-time initial-conditions” that must be “injected” into various real-time integration-operations comprising a Discrete/Continuous (D/C) control-Algorithm. An illustrative example is presented. The “initial-condition injection” technique introduced here is also applicable-to a broad-variety of computational or simulation applications involving the real-time imposition of a sequence of strategic "jump"-changes/updates of the evolving real-time values of various state-variables x i (t) associated with a dynamical system or process. For instance, such as those encountered-in the simulation of Newtonian dynamics associated-with “abrupt” changes in mass and/or “momentum” that are natural consequences of various kinds of elastic and non-elastic impacts, collisions, and mass-separations/mergings.

We propose a novel methodology of knowledge sharing in mechatronic R&D department by the integration of information repository(IR) using minimal organizational restructure. Through computer simulation and system dynamics, we successfully encompass this concept into a systematic, top-down and inclusive model to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the strategy. The servomechanical-prototype configuration in Hard Disk Drives(HDDs) R&D division was analyzed as an illustration of the methodology. Our simple yet comprehensible and replicable model reports encouraging results and improvements: lower process cycle times and their variations, as well as augmented systems capacity and stability.

The complexity and dynamics in group age traffic requires flexible, efficient, and adaptive planning and controlling processes. While the general problem refers to the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), additional requirements have to be fulfilled in application. Individual properties and priorities of orders, a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles, dynamically incoming orders, unexpected events etc. require a proactive and reactive system behavior. To enable automated dispatching processes, we have implemented a multiagent system where the decision making is shifted from a central system to autonomous, interacting, intelligent agents. To evaluate the approach we used multi agent-based simulation and modeled several scenarios on real world infrastructures with orders provided by our industrial partner. The results reveal that agent-based dispatching meets the increasing requirements in groupage traffic while supporting the combination of pickup and delivery tours and accommodating request priorities, time-windows, as well as capacity constraints.

Modern approaches of cancer therapies have specific effect on the typical mechanisms of uncontrollably growing and multiplying tumor cells. These targeted therapies can be more efficient than commonly applied methods in clinical practice. Antiangiogenic therapy prevents tumors from forming new blood vessels to ensure sufficient oxygen and nutrients. Without appropriate vascularization, the development of the tumor is inhibited, thus metastasis formation is blocked. In this paper we briefly review the importance of antiangiogenic therapy. To improve mathematical models of tumor growth under angiogenic inhibitors, the process of tumor development must be analyzed. We have chosen Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to follow up the dynamics of tumor growth and monitor the effect of angiogenic inhibitors. T1-weighted images have been acquired using gradient-echo, spin echo and fast spin echo sequences to examine subcutaneous mouse tumors. We have found that fast spin echo results the best solution: short data acquisition time and good contrast without contrast agent.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have strict energy consumption requirements. Moreover, the complexity constraints of the nodes and the wireless dynamics must be considered in real life implementations. CTP (Collection Tree Protocol) is a state-of-the-art routing protocol that considers the main issues that arise in practical WSN applications. Nowadays, commercial wireless sensors can adjust their transmission power to reduce the energy consumption and the collision probability of the network. Since nodes in CTP transmit at a predefined power, the reliability and the lifetime of the network may be reduced. To solve this, this paper proposes an alternative routing metric for CTP, referred to as MaxPDR, that includes a transmission power control in the routing process. With this strategy, the incompatibility issues and the additional signaling that may arise with the combination of individual techniques are avoided. MaxPDR has been implemented in commercial motes to evaluate its performance and compare it with the routing metrics used by the original CTP and ZigBee.

Synchronized phasor measurements, are useful devices for monitoring the performance of the power systems for improve the Energy Management System (EMS) applications at the control center. This paper presents a new alternative approach for using the PMU in Dynamic State Estimation. Where, the rectangular coordinate of the current is decoupled and added to decoupled formulation of the Weighted Least Squares (WLS) state estimation. The proposed approach is applied to the standard IEEE 14-bus system as the case study. MATLAB program software is used to realize the simulation process thus verifying the excellent performance of the proposed approach.

Models of real systems are of fundamental importance for its analysis, making it possible to simulate or predict its behavior. Additionally, advanced techniques for controller design, optimization, monitoring, fault detection and diagnosis components are also based on process models. One of the most used techniques to model a system is by identification. System identification or process identification is the field of mathematical modeling of systems, in which the parameters are obtained from test or experimental data. Given the importance of obtaining a model able to represent the dynamics of real processes, we developed a software that aggregates identification algorithms using Least squares (LS), Least squares Extended (ELS), Generalized Least Squares (GLS) Recursive least squares with Compensator Polarization (BCRLS). This identification package is used in this paper to identify an educational level plant. Its actual data was inserted in the package and thus, results from different identification techniques implemented in the algorithm were compared. All steps necessary to carry out the identification and analysis of the autocorrelation of the output data for the definition of the sampling period, the design of excitation signals and data collection were taken in consideration. The conclusions reached are that the software provides consistency and the implemented algorithms return a model capable of representing the linear part of the system's dynamics.

Morphology control and growth dynamics of in-plane solid-liquid-solid silicon nanowires

In-plane silicon nanowires (SiNWs) growth, via a newly proposed in-plane solid-liquid-solid (IPSLS) mode, is mediated by nanoscale indium drops that transform amorphous silicon precursors to well-defined SiNWs during a reactive-gas-free annealing process. Compared to the well-known vapor-liquid-solid process, the movement of the front and rear interfaces are coupled to each other via the liquid catalyst drop, which causes the deformation of the liquid catalyst drop (either squeezed or stretched). We show that this growth dynamics indicates an effective way to control and design the morphology of the in-plane SiNWs. We also develop an in-depth insight of this morphology control mechanism via the IPSLS mode, and further address their direct influence on the strain built up in the crystalline SiNWs during their in-situ growth. Finite element methods are widely used for simulations of contact dynamics of flexible multibody systems. Such a simulation is computationally very inefficient because the system's dimension is usually very large and the simulation time step has to be very small in order to ensure numerical stability. A potential solution to the problem is to apply a model reduction method in the simulation. Although many model reduction techniques have been developed, most of them cannot be readily applied due to the high nonlinearity of the involved contact dynamics model. This paper presents a solution to the problem. The approach is based on a modified Lyapunov balanced truncation method. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate that, by applying the proposed model reduction method, the simulation process can be significantly speeded up while the resulting error caused by the model reduction is still within an acceptable level.

Fueling control in Diesel engines is not only of significance to the combustion process in one particular cycle, but also influences the subsequent dynamics of air-path loop and combustion events, particularly when exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is employed. To better reveal such inherently interactive relations, this paper presents a physics-based, control-oriented model describing the dynamics of the intake conditions with fuel injection profile being its input for Diesel engines equipped with EGR and turbocharging systems. The effectiveness of this model is validated by comparing the predictive results with those produced by a high-fidelity 1-D computational GT-Power engine model.
