We survey useful ingredients for a new class of mathematical process-modeling languages aimed at spatial and developmental biology. Existing modeling languages for computational systems biology do not fully address the problems of spatial modeling that arise in morphodynamics (the local dynamics of form) and its applications to biological development. We seek to extend the operator algebra semantics approach from our previous "Dynamical Grammars" modeling language, whose most spatial object type is the labelled graph, to encompass more flexible topological objects. Taking clues from current developments in 3D meshing and from topological modeling for biology, illustrated by a plant tissue example, we seek language support for the approximation of low-dimensional CW complexes (which are nontrivial topological spaces, with cardinality of the continuum) and dynamic fields thereon, by finite labelled abstract complexes. Some of the proposed types would be computationally demanding, without further restriction. Restrictions and control of these approximations can be specified by use of "metricated" types. Minimally, such approximations should permit the accurate simulation of spatial diffusion processes.
Geometric fault detection and isolation filters are known for having excellent fault isolation, fault reconstruction and sensitivity properties under small modeling uncertainty and noise. However they are assumed to b...

In order to understand the effect of incorporating plasticizing modifier on the low velocity impact response of E-glass/epoxy composites, polyether polyol was mixed into DGEBA epoxy resin systems by a high speed mechanical stirrer as a plasticizing modifier at 5 and 10 phr. Modified epoxy resin system was then used to fabricate E-glass/epoxy composite laminates by compression molding at elevated temperature. Flexure and thermo-mechanical properties of the modified three phase epoxy systems were determined by 3-point bend flexure test and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Low velocity impact test at two different impact energy levels was carried out to analyze and characterize the effects of incorporating elastomer on impact response of the laminates. Incorporation of polyol in E-glass/epoxy laminates at 5 and 10 phr improved impact energy absorption capability with a slight decrease of peak load in comparison with control laminates. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed a declining trend of crosslink density of epoxy resin systems upon increasing polyol toughener in epoxy samples which may be one of the reasons of decreasing peak load of the composites. On the other hand, flexible polymer chain of polyol group inserted between epoxy molecules enhanced the ductility of composites and hence energy absorption capability with a slight reduction of peak strength.

This paper presents an original hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) solution for real-time testing and optimization of the frequency control mechanism in autonomous microgrids (MG), when battery energy storage systems (BESS) are integrated along classical and RES-based generators to stabilize the frequency. The focus is on autonomous MGs that dynamically should perform similarly to the conventional power systems. During MG autonomous operation, the generators should accomplish the frequency controlprocess, by means of their automatic generation control. However, RES-based generators have poor controllability in terms of active power, and therefore the need of improving the MG power reserve by adding energy storage systems is often demanded. The proposed HIL solution aims to improve the design of the BESS frequency controlsystems according to the MG characteristics, being based on aggregated models of the involved mechanisms in the MG dynamics. An experimental test bench including a real-time digital simulator with BESS controller in the HIL structure is used for assessing the proposed system performances.

In this work, the dynamics of interest topics in web-based educational environments are studied by analysing the students' interactions during the teaching/learning process. Forums are the main tools to observe these interactions for distance learning. Specific techniques are needed for analysing the large amount of data generated in the course, which allows faculty making interesting conclusions to improve it. In particular, we propose a set of algorithms to discover relevant topics (and subtopics) appeared in the forums' messages. The results obtained are also discussed in order to find out patterns of behaviour.

It is hypothesised that complex biological gene regulatory networks can be evolved from simple networks through modularisation, duplication and specialisation processes. However, the biological mechanisms of this process remain elusive and little work has been done to verify this hypothesis in a computational environment. This paper aims to couple two simple regulatory motifs, one toggle switch and one self-sustained oscillator using an evolutionary algorithm, which can be seen as a computational simulation of natural evolution. We have successfully evolved several complex dynamics for two different connections arrangements between the oscillator and toggle switch networks in a master/slave set up, which confirms the previously reported results achieved manually. Our results indicate that generating complex dynamics by coupling of simple motifs using simulated evolutionary mechanisms is methodologically feasible and more efficient, which can be seen as an indirect and partial verification of the above hypothesis.
