In this position paper we present S 2 -MOVE (Smart and Social Move), a social innovation project funded by MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, Research and University). S 2 -MOVE is based on a new conception of urban community, that allows citizens to share data and decisions in a smart and innovative way. In order to implement this new vision of urban mobility, called smart mobility, a deep integration among citizens, private and public transportation systems and ICT is required. In this new social and challenging scenario, citizens are not just customers of a service, but they produce and share information to obtain a common goal: a smart and efficient mobility, for everyone. S 2 -MOVE proposes an architecture able to collect, update, and process real-time and heterogeneous information from various electronic devices (tablets, smartphones, electronic control devices in vehicles) and from the actors of the urban scenario (public/private transportation vehicles, pedestrians, infrastructures). Mining such information allows to produce new knowledge which is then made available again to the citizens through specific services. The urban mobility issues to which S 2 -MOVE can offer a contribution, are linked to two crucial aspects: continuous and shared monitoring for real-time management of urban traffic and an interactive mobile information service for drivers. In this position paper, after introducing the rationale of the project, we describe the main technological aspects involved in the design and in the implementation of the S 2 -MOVE architecture. Then, we present a proof of the control approach used to create and manage fleets of vehicles and we provide some preliminary results obtained using simulation.

Damping feedback stabilization for cyclic interconnections systems: Oscillations suppression and synchronization

This paper considers the problem of stabilizing nonlinear systems in the form of cyclic interconnections. This class of systems is of interest in process control, as some (bio)chemical reactions can be described as cyclic interconnections. The objective of the paper is to present a constructive approach to compute a dissipative potential function for the system. This potential is then used for constructing a smooth feedback stabilizing controller. We first obtain a characteristic one-form for the system by taking the interior product of a non vanishing two-form with respect to the drift vector field. A homotopy operator is then constructed locally around the desired equilibrium, leading to the computation of a dissipative potential for the system. The dynamics of the system is then decomposed into an exact part and an anti-exact one. The exact part is generated by a potential, that is used to construct a smooth stabilizing feedback controller under the weak Jurdjevic-Quinn conditions. We consider the problems of oscillations suppression and synchronization of oscillators as illustrations of potential applications of the proposed construction. A distributed control framework for smart grid development: Energy/water system optimal operation and electric grid integration

In this work, we propose a conceptual distributed control framework for electrical grid integrated with distributed renewable energy generation systems in order to enable the development of the so-called "smart electrical grid". First, we introduce the key elements and their interactions in the proposed control architecture and discuss the design of the distributed control systems which are able to coordinate their actions to account for optimization considerations on the system operation. Subsequently, we focus on a specific wind/solar energy generation system connected to a reverse osmosis water desalination system and the electrical grid and design two supervisory predictive controllers via model predictive control to operate the integrated system taking into account short-term and long-term optimal maintenance and operation considerations, respectively. Simulations are carried out to illustrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present an adaptive extremum seeking control scheme for fed-batch bioreactors with Haldane kinetics. The proposed adaptive extremum seeking approach utilizes the structure information of the process kinetics to derive a seeking algorithm that drives the system states to the desired setpoints that maximize the biomass production. It assumes that only the substrate concentration is available for on-line measurement. Lyapunov stability is used in the design of the extremum seeking controller structure and the development of the parameter learning laws. Optimal control of convection-diffusion process with time-varying spatial domain: Czochralski crystal growth

This paper considers the optimal control of convection diffusion systems modeled by parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with time-dependent spatial domains for application to the crystal temperature regulation problem in the Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth process. The parabolic PDE model describing the temperature dynamics in the crystal region arising from the first principles continuum mechanics is defined on the time-varying spatial domain. The dynamics of the domain boundary evolution, which is determined by the mechanical subsystem pulling the crystal from the melt, are described by an ordinary differential equation for rigid body mechanics and unidirectionally coupled to the convection diffusion process described by the PDE system. The representation of the PDE as an evolution system on an appropriate infinite-dimensional space is developed and the analytic expression and properties of the associated two-parameter semigroup generated by the nonautonomous operator are provided. The LQR control synthesis in terms of the two-parameter semigroup is considered. The optimal control problem setup for the PDE coupled with the finite-dimensional subsystem is presented and numerical results demonstrate the regulation of the two-dimensional crystal temperature distribution in the time-varying spatial domain. This paper presents a method of finite dimensional Markov process (FDMP) approximation for stochastic dynamical systems with time delay. The FDMP method preserves the standard state space format of the system, and allows us to apply all the existing methods and theories for analysis and control of stochastic dynamical systems. The paper presents the theoretical framework for stochastic dynamical systems with time delay based on the PDMP method, including the FPK equation, backward Kolmogorov equation, and reliability formulation. The work of this paper opens a door to various studies of stochastic dynamical systems with time delay.

Invariant based modeling and control of multi-phase reactor systems

We propose a modeling framework for stable simulation of multi-phase reactor systems operating at thermodynamic equilibrium. The model framework can be used to determine system characteristics, explore parameter sensitivity and test control system strategies. The thermodynamic equilibrium assumption and the use of reaction invariants make it computationally inexpensive. We show that the feedback control approach based on the overall inventories of the system can be effectively used for improved performance of such reactor systems. Two multi-phase reactor systems - the vapor recovery reactor used in carbothermic aluminum reduction and the gasification reactor used in IGCC are considered to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed modeling and control approach. Robustification as a tool in modeling biochemical reaction networks

Biological functions have evolved to become robust against a multitude of perturbations such as gene mutations, intracellular noise and changes in the physical and chemical environment. This robustness should be reflected in models of the underlying biochemical networks, and robustness analysis has consequently been established as an important tool for model validation in systems biology. However, while robustness analysis can be used to invalidate a given model, it does not support the postulation of model modifications that can serve to improve the robustness. Herein we propose a method for this purpose, based on computing the sensitivity of the robustness with respect to generic dynamic perturbations applied to the individual network edges. To quantify robustness we compute the smallest simultaneous change in the activity of the network nodes that induces a bifurcation in the network, resulting in a qualitative change in the network behavior. The proposed method can be used to identify network interactions with the most significant impact on the overall robustness of a given function. By considering the impact of adding new nodes and edges, the method can also be used to postulate the presence of important unmodeled components and interactions. The focus here is on biological functions related to bistable switches and sustained oscillations, and the proposed methodology is demonstrated through application to metabolic oscillations in white blood cells and bistable switching in MAPK signal transduction. The classical Goodwin model of oscillations in a simple gene regulatory network is used for illustration throughout the paper. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
