Output-feedback control for stochastic nonlinear systems

For a class of stochastic nonlinear systems satisfying linear growth condition, the paper studies the outputfeedback stabilization problem. Being different from all the existing references, because of the unmeasurable states existing in the linear growth condition, this paper introduces an undetermined high-gain observer. By using the backstepping design technique, we constructively give a design of the output-feedback controller. The high-gain parameter is appropriately chosen to make the zero solution of the closed-loop system globally asymptotically stable in probability, and regulate the output to the origin almost surely.

System characterization and identification are fundamental problems in systems theory and play a major role in the design of controllers. System identification and nonlinear control has been proposed and implemented using intelligent systems such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, reinforcement learning, artificial immune system and many others using inverse models, direct/indirect adaptive, or cloning a linear controller. Adaptive Critic designs (ACDs) are neural networks capable of optimization over time under conditions of noise and uncertainty. The ACD technique develops optimal control laws using two networks - critic and action. There are merits for each approach adopted will be presented. The primary aim of this tutorial is to provide control and system engineers/researchers from industry/academia, new to the field of computational intelligence with the fundamentals required to benefit from and contribute to the rapidly growing field of computational intelligence and its real world applications, including identification and control of power and energy systems, unmanned vehicle navigation, signal and image processing, and evolvable and adaptive hardware systems.

As demands for high frequency quartz crystal resonators rise, we are prompted to design and make overtone devices with the same material, process, and technology. Indeed, high-order overtone resonators have been widely utilized in many applications and further demands in precision products are also growing. The design of overtone resonators and further improvement of the existing ones to meet precision requirements are largely based on empirical approaches, but we found that the technique can be polished with theoretical and analytical efforts as we examine the applications of the Mindlin plate theory in the design and analysis of the fundamental type. Through the extensive improvements of the Mindlin plate theory, we can now analyze the vibration mode couplings, electrode effect, optimal sizes, and thermal behavior, among others. These essential analytical procedures have been implemented in finite element analysis tools with more advanced features such as the nonlinear behavior prediction and eventually circuit parameter extraction. Since it has been proven that the Mindlin plate equations can be used for the vibration analysis of plates at the higher-order overtone modes with accurate prediction of frequency and dispersion relations in the vicinity of cut-off frequencies, we extended the equations to the third-order for the modal behavior and frequency spectra. The results show that earlier knowledge on the proper selection of the sizes of electrode can be proven from our analysis. In addition, the spatial variation and end effects of displacements, particularly of the working mode, can be used in the optimal selection of resonator configuration. The design changes can be used as a way to improve the resonator performance, which has been increasingly degenerating for higher-order overtone types, to meet more stringent requirements. In this paper an output regulation design of nonlinear system is applied to solve a tracking problem for a simulated nuclear reactor. A nonlinear observer for state estimation of a nonlinear nuclear reactor system is designed using a Lyapunov function. A nuclear reactor power controller is then designed by using the output feedback using the observed state. Simulations are provided to show the efficiency of the proposed controller with estimated state feedback from the proposed observer.

Kokotovic has been active for more than thirty years as control engineer researcher and educator first in his native Yugoslavia and then from 1966 through 1990 at the University of Illinois where he held the endowed Grainger Chair. In 1991 he joined the University of California Santa Barbara where he directs the Center for Control Engineering and Computation. He has co-authored eight books and numerous articles contributing to sensitivity analysis singular perturbation methods and robust adaptive and nonlinear control. Professor Kokotovic is also active in industrial applications of control theory. As a consultant to Ford he was involved in the development of the first series of automotive computer controls and at General Electric he participated in large scale systems studies. Professor Kokotovic is a Fellow of IEEE and a member of National Academy of Engineering. He received the 1983 and 1993 outstanding IEEE Transactions Paper Awards and presented the 1991 Bode Prize Lecture. He is the recipient of the 1990 IFAC Quazza Medal and the 1995 IEEE Control Systems Award.

We design an observer-based control law for a class of systems that include monotonic nonlinearities of the unmeasured states. Our observer results in nonlinear error dynamics which can be represented as the feedback interconnection of a linear system and a time-verying multivariable sector nonlinearity. The convergence of the estimation error is guaranteed by an observer matrix that renders the linear part passive, and is computable with LMI software. The feedback design is completed by combining the observer with a control law that renders the plant input-to-state stable with respect to the state estimation error.

Langasite is of interest for resonator applications for several reasons including its good temperature behavior, good piezoelectric coupling, low acoustic loss and high Q factor. Biasing effects for such resonators, crucial for design applications, depend on an accurate understanding of the effects from nonlinear material constants. Accurate experimental determination of the nonlinear elastic, piezoelectric, dielectric and electrostrictive constants requires the evaluation of the contribution of different nonlinear material constants to the biasing effect. In this article, the shift of resonant frequency due to applied electrical field is discussed for thickness-mode langasite resonators. The resonant frequency is determined as a function of static electrical field applied in the thickness direction. A variety of plano-plano langasite resonators with different material orientations are considered. Of particular interest for this article is the sensitivity of the observed frequency shifts with respect to changes in the nonlinear elastic, piezoelectric, electrostrictive and dielectric constants. First-order perturbation integral theory is used for the theory and numerical analysis to determine the frequency shifts and sensitivities. Implications with respect to interpretation of measurements are discussed. © 2006 IEEE.

The optimal output tracking control (OOTC) problem for a class of nonlinear systems with persistent disturbances is considered. An approximate design algorithm of the OOTC law is presented in the finite time domain. Firstly, the two-point boundary value (TPBV) problem, which is derived from the original OOTC theory, is transformed to a coupled nonlinear TPBV problem in state vectors and adjoint vectors. The coupled TPBV problem is further transformed to two decoupled linear differential sequences via a recently developed successive approximation approach (SAA). By iteratively solving the adjoint vector sequence, the OOTC law can be obtained, which consists of analytic linear feedforward and feedback terms, as well as a nonlinear compensation term determined by the limit of the adjoint vector sequence. Furthermore, a reduced-order reference input observer and a reduced-order disturbance observer are constructed in order to solve the physically realizable problem of feedforward control. Finally, simulation examples show the effectiveness of the presented approach.

In this paper, the output-feedback stabilization problem is investigated for the first time for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems whose zero dynamics may be unstable. Under the assumption that the inverse dynamics of the system is stochastic input-to-state stabilizable, a stabilizing output-feedback controller is constructively designed by the integrator backstepping method together with a new reduced-order observer design and the technique of changing supply functions. It is shown that, under small-gain type conditions, the resulting closed-loop system is globally asymptotically stable in the probabilistic sense. The obtained results extend the existing methodology from deterministic systems to stochastic systems.
