Computer Aided design in control Systems 1988 - Selected Papers from the 4th IFAC symposium

The paper describes software written for the investigation of the stability of, and limit cycles in, nonlinear sampled-data systems. The software uses a new approach based on the z-transform describing function and includes two sections. A numerical section which consists of solving numerically the system characteristic equation and a graphical section which plots the ZDF of the nonlinearity and the Nyquist locus of the linear plant on a z- or a w-plane. Both methods investigate automatically the different limit cycles that may occur at the same frequency but with different waveshapes at the output of a two segment nonlinearity.

A description of a suite of programs used in the computer-aided design of linear, time-invariant, multivariable control systems is given. Algorithms which have been programmed for control systems design in the time-domain include optimal state feedback, Kalman filtering, pole-placement, observer design, and output feedback design with dynamics if necessary. The option to design controllers for continuous- or discrete-time systems is generally provided in the above programs. controller design in the frequency-domain is carried out using a package which incorporates the direct-Nyquist array, inverse-Nyquist array, and characteristic locus design methods. User interaction with this package is via a vector-refresh graphics workstation. The foregoing controller design algorithms in turn rely upon a number of support programs. These may include eigenvalue and eigenvector routines, function minimisation routines and LU Factorisation routines, for example. Programs for the conversion between time- and frequency-domain system representations are also available. Associated programs for the manipulation of polynomials include a root-finding routine and for matrix polynomials a greatest common left- or right-divisor routine, and the Smith-normal form routine. A routine for finding the McMillan form of rational matrices is also available.

The design of a variable structure model-following controller is considered. By specifying the structure of a model plant and using the variable structure control (VSC) approach, an adaptive controller which forces the error between the model and plant states to zero, can be designed. A continuous nonlinear control yields robust performance, which is insensitive to a class of variations in the plant parameters and external disturbances. The design technique incorporates an eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment algorithm available in an on-line CAD package, VASSYD. A controller is designed for a typical robot arm to demonstrate the method. Using the nominal robot parameters a deterministic controller is obtained which yields effective decoupling between the robot manipulator's subsystems. Simulation results for various values of plant parameters are presented. The robot tracks the states of the model plant, which in turn follows the desired trajectories, very closely. This indicates the inherent robustness and effectiveness of the VSC approach (and related techniques) in the deterministic control of uncertain systems.

A frequency-domain technique for input/output (I/O) characterization of stable, multivariable, and highly nonlinear systems (e.g., industrial robots, aerospace vehicles, chemical processes) is presented. We require only that the nonlinear system is representable in state-variable differential equation form, and that it is possible to integrate the system of equations numerically when input signals are sinusoidal. Otherwise, the technique is not restricted with respect to system order, number of nonlinearities, configuration, or nonlinearity type. The I/O characterization technique involves determining the gain and phase of the nonlinear system response to sinusoidal inputs of various excitation amplitudes at a set of user-defined discrete frequencies. These sinusoidal-input describing function (SIDF) models are obtained by exciting all input channels at one time with sinusoids of different but nearly equal frequencies, integrating the dynamic equations of motion over time, and simultaneously performing a Fourier analysis (evaluating Fourier integrals) on the output signals after they are at steady-state. Repeating this procedure for various amplitude-levels of the excitation signal will result in a number of matrix sinusoidal-input describing function I/O models.

In this paper, a practical program package of computer-aided characteristic analysis of aircraft and mathematical model design of flight simulator is introduced. This CAD package consists of five parts: flight test data error precorrection, data compatibility check, aerodynamic coefficient identification, characteristic analysis of aircraft and mathematical model design of flight simulator. In order to get high accuracy, the modified gain extended Kalman filter and smoother algorithm, separated bias identification and state estimation algorithm and shifted orthogonal series algorithm are respectively used for data compatibility check, U-D covariance factorization being used for improving numerical stability and computational efficiency. In the identification program of aerodynamic coefficient, linear maximum likelihood method is suitable to the flight regime of low angle of attack, and for the flight regime of high angle of attack, nonlinear maximum likelihood method or shifted orthogonal series method should be used. The results show that with this package the performance stability and control characteristics of aircraft and the mathematical model of flight simulator can be determined satisfactorily.

The design and analysis of time-invariant linear control systems give rise to a variety of interesting linear algebra problems. Numerically effective methods now exist for several of these problems. However, algorithms for large scale computations and efficient parallel algorithms for these problems are virtually nonexistent. In this paper, we propose several efficient general-purpose parallel algorithms for single-input and multi-input eigenvalue assignment problems. A desirable feature of these algorithms is that they are composed of simple linear algebraic operations such as matrix-vector multiplication, solution of a linear system, and computations of eigensystem and singular values of a symmetric matrix, for which efficient parallel algorithms have already been developed and parallel software libraries are being built based on these algorithms. The proposed algorithms thus have potential for implementations on some existing and future parallel processors. We also propose numerical method for Sylvester matrix equation arising in the construction of Luenberger observer. The method does not need reduction to 'condensed' forms and is thus suitable for large and sparse matrices. The method also exhibits certain parallelism.

The relevance of control theory in power systems is brought out in two areas, namely excitation control and optimal power flow applications. Excitation of generators and the associated regulators show an Interesting development which illustrates many concepts of modern control theory without realizing any particular theoretical item. There is a good reason for, viz. the fact that the real system cannot be covered by a single model, e.g. a linearized one. The change of operating and external system conditions blinds any optimal results in distinct operating points. Hence, it is necessary to use the theory as a reference and the difference from the ideal result as a yardstick for the efficacy of a practical design. In this way modern control theory acts as a powerful incentive. The realizations themselves are based on optimal output control, precalculated optimal settings, the so-called power system stabilizer which acts as an observer, compromise adjustments, and approximate bang-bang control. A remarkable development Is the employment of the model reference scheme to achieve an adaptive control action. The other area discussed in the paper is the use of the optimal power flow system control applications such as security enhancement, dispatching, and corrective rescheduling. The central idea is to solve load flows subject to security based constraints and subject to the minimization of a performance index. It seems that this power flow problem is becoming one of the central analytic and numerical problems 1n system control. It comprises a nonlinear steady state model, a search for an optimum and the consideration of many constraints. The handling of these Items in an efficient way is very demanding. At the moment several approach categories are being discussed, namely reduced gradients, single and multlstep linear methods and nonlinear methods. The concept of nonlinear observer theory is used to address control problems typical of many aerospace applications requiring high performance. Basically, nonlinear observers are employed to reconstruct system states which are related in some nonlinear way. A feed-forward technique, called the command generator tracker (Ref. 1), is then constructed to feed this information forward to the control channels to optimize performance The design structure is set up in such a way that conventional (optimal) feedback techniques are implemented independently to stabilize the system about trajectory perturbations Examples of this technique are given for three widely different aerospace applications and performance improvement is compared to classical and linear optimal designs.

This paper uses a multiple time scaling analysis of jet engine dynamics to derive a non-linear minimum time control law. The ideas are based on concepts taken from singular perturbation theory. Further reductions in model order are permitted by this approach, which results in a feedback form for the control solution. Numerical results are given which compare the accuracy of the solution with open-loop solutions obtained using conjugate gradient and dynamic programming methods.
