Automated detection of touching cells in images with inhomogeneous illumination is a challenging problem. A detection framework using a stack of two conditional random fields is proposed to detect touching elongated cells in scanning electron microscopy images with inhomogeneous illumination. The first conditional random field employs shading information to segment the cells where the effect of inhomogeneous illumination is reduced. The second conditional random field estimates the cell walls using their estimated cell wall probability. The method is evaluated using a dataset of Clostridium difficile cells. Finally, the method is compared with two region-based cell detection methods, CellDetect and DeTEC, improving the F-score by at least 20%.

3D face similarity is a critical issue in computer vision, computergraphics and face recognition and so on. Since Fr@chet distance is an effective metric for measuring curve similarity, a novel 3D face similarity measure method based on Fr^chet distances of geodesics is proposed in this paper. In our method, the surface similarity between two 3D faces is measured by the similarity between two sets of 3D curves on them. Due to the intrinsic property of geodesics, we select geodesics as the comparison curves. Firstly, the geodesics on each 3D facial model emanating from the nose tip point are extracted in the same initial direction with equal angular increment. Secondly, the Fr@chet distances between the two sets of geodesics on the two compared facial models are computed. At last, the similarity between the two facial models is computed based on the Fr6chet distances of the geodesics obtained in the second step. We verify our method both theoretically and practically. In theory, we prove that the similarity of our method satisfies three properties: reflexivity, symmetry, and triangle inequality. And in practice, experiments are conducted on the open 3D face database GavaDB, Texas 3D Face Recognition database, and our 3D face database. After the comparison with iso-geodesic and Hausdorff distance method, the results illustrate that our method has good discrimination ability and can not only identify the facial models of the same person, but also distinguish the facial models of any two different persons.

Graphic Communication and Design (GCD) students often struggle to understand and convert multi-faceted objects from orthographic (2D) into isometric (3D). Research established a strong link between spatial visualisation and the field of graphics Communication. Conventional teaching and learning practice using textbooks, physical models and pencil drawings is not sufficient for improving spatial visualisation skills. The current research focused on the effect of three-dimensional solid computer modelling software (3D-CAD) on the spatial visualisation skills of GCD students at a rural-based university. Students at this university are from disadvantaged and under-resourced schools and they arrive with little or no computer-based experience. The study principally depended on literature that suggested that spatial visualisation is developed throughout a person’s lifetime and that it can be improved by partaking in spatial activities. Underpinned by Piaget’s perception and imagery theory, the study investigated the impact of 3D-CAD on students’ spatial visualisation skills. The study was carried out at the University of Zululand (Unizulu), comprising 200 pre-service teachers taking a GCD module in 2016 and 2017. The study employed a pre-test and post-test design using the Purdue Spatial Visualisation Test: Rotation (PSVT:R) to evaluate students’ spatial visualisation before and after a 3D-CAD intervention. The post-test scores from the PSVT:R for the groups were compared using ANCOVA. Results showed that there was a significant difference with a moderate positive effect in the spatial visualisation skills between the experimental group and the control group. Therefore, 3D-CAD proved to be an effective means of instruction in a GCD module.

The edge of the network has the potential to host services for supporting a variety of user applications, ranging in complexity from data preprocessing, image and video rendering, and interactive gaming, to embedded systems in autonomous cars and built environments. However, the computational and data resources over which such services are hosted, and the actors that interact with these services, have an intermittent availability and access profile, introducing significant risk for user applications that must rely on them. This article investigates the development of an edge marketplace, which is able to support multiple providers for offering services at the network edge, and to enable demand supply for influencing the operation of such a marketplace. Resilience, cost, and quality of service and experience will subsequently enable such a marketplace to adapt its services over time. This article also describes how distributed-ledger technologies (such as blockchains) provide a promising approach to support the operation of such a marketplace and regulate its behavior (such as the GDPR in Europe) and operation. Two application scenarios provide context for the discussion of how such a marketplace would function and be utilized in practice.
