Unevenly distributed image illumination is a problem in an automatic machine visual inspection system used for fiber connector defect detection. This unevenly distributed illumination makes it difficult to find an appropriate horizontal threshold to convert a gray-scale image to a binary image to separate surface defects, such as blobs and scratches, from the background of the connector. This paper proposes some effective methods to compensate the unevenly distributed illumination problem so that standard imageprocessing methods can be used effectively to detect the defects of the fiber connectors. In this paper we describe some of the research issues and challenges in image-based location awareness and navigation. We will describe two systems being developed at Purdue University as test beds for our ideas. The main system architecture combines imageprocessing, mobility, wireless communication, and location awareness. We will describe two fundamental scenarios for using images to aid in mobile navigation problems. The first provides the ability to use a locally acquired image to determine the identity of an object, for example a building, as one roams in an area. The second problem is the use of images in a database to aid in vehicle navigation. The solution to these problems use location information, such as GPS signals, to compare and search location-annotated images in a database. We believe location information can improve the accuracy in image database search.

In this paper, we describe a new lossless compression algorithm for color video sequences. Our approach is to exploit both spatial and temporal redundancies in the video sequence by developing a new adaptive algorithm. By adaptive selection between spatial and temporal prediction we show that our scheme is better than state-of-the-art lossless compression algorithms.

The use of partial differential equations in imageprocessing has become an active area of research in the last few years. In particular, active contours are being used for image segmentation, either explicitly as snakes, or implicitly through the level set approach. In this paper, we consider the use of the implicit active contour approach for segmenting scientific images of pollen grains obtained using a scanning electron microscope. Our goal is to better understand the pros and cons of these techniques and to compare them with the traditional approaches such as the Canny and SUSAN edge detectors. The preliminary results of our study show that the level set method is computationally expensive and requires the setting of several different parameters. However, it results in closed contours, which may be useful in separating objects from the background in an image.

In this study, we propose a new multi-frame method to compute a smooth and boundary preserving optical flow estimate. The approach is based on the bilateral filtering, a fast edge preserving smoothing tool. Inspired by the variational origin of the bilateral filter, we construct an energy functional that takes into account the image brightness conservation constraint and the bilateral smoothness of the optical flow. Minimization of this energy functional is performed using the Gauss Seidel iterations. Experimental results on synthetic and real image sequences demonstrate that the proposed approach yields an optical flow that is smooth and yet motion boundary preserving.

Several color matching algorithms are proposed to merge two or more video inputs of smaller sizes in to one single video output of a larger size with a wider field of view for the video mosaic application. The main challenge is to remove apparent seam lines between image boundaries. All developed algorithms share the same basic idea with different implementation details. That is, color differences between input images are first compensated using either histogram equalization or polynomial-based contrast stretching techniques. Then, a linear filtering technique is adopted to remove seam lines between image boundaries. The algorithms are developed in both the pixel and the DCT domains. The compressed-domain processing is attractive since it reduces the computational complexity. It is shown by experimental results that the color matching problem can be solved satisfactorily even in the compressed domain.
