It is generally acknowledged that the image quality measures based or inspired by some findings on the human visual system (HVS) mechanisms are more appealing than classical measures such as the PSNR or MSE. Many HVS-based image quality assessment methods have been previously proposed. However, because of the complexity and the influence of the great number of observation parameters on the HVS-based image quality metrics there is no standard measure yet. In this paper, the image distortion metric proposed in A. Beghdadi et al. (2003) is reviewed and some improvements are suggested. This metric makes use of the joint spatial/spatial-frequency representation and applies a relatively simple nonlinear energy detection procedure. This simple distortion measure does not take into account any well-established model for the masking effect. The consistency of the proposed measure with subjective human evaluation is demonstrated on some standard image distortions.

This paper deals with the visual content adaptation, in the context of MPEG-21 standard, to help low vision users have better accessibility to the contents. The proposed adaptation targets at two low vision symptoms, loss of fine detail and lack of contrast. Specifically, we present an adaptation framework describing the problem space and then a systematic contrast-enhancement method to improve the content visibility for low vision users. The experiment results show that the proposed framework and method are effective for the low vision users.

Contourlets have emerged as a new mathematical tool for image processing and provide compact and decorrelated image representations. Hidden Markov modeling (HMM) of contourlet coefficients is a powerful approach for statistical processing of natural images. In this paper, we extended the hidden Markov modeling framework to contourlets and combined hidden Markov trees (HMT) with hidden Markov model to form HMM-Contourlet HMT model. The model is used for block based multiresolution texture segmentation. The performance of the HMM-contourlet HMT texture segmentation method is compared with that of HMM-real HMT and HMM-complex HMT methods. The HMM-contourlet HMT method provides superior texture segmentation results and excellent visual performance at small block sizes.

In this paper the geometrical properties of an imaging system are investigated. This system uses mirrors to simulate additional cameras. The geometry developed here helps us to capture the images of an object from meaningful viewpoint locations. The imaging system with the desired geometry is realized by adjusting the positions and orientations of mirrors. A special calibration pattern is used for the process of camera calibration which finds the unknown camera parameters and gives feedback about the degree of compliance with the desired geometry. The calibrated camera and its mirror images are used to create a 2D image of an object surface with a uniform geometry. After a pre-defined inner or outer surface of a test object is imaged from different view angles using mirrors, these images are warped and blended in a single image which is used for visual inspection. Hence, the vaguely defined process of inspecting 3D objects and their surface textures is converted to an efficient and well defined process of inspecting 2D images.

Based on the numerous quality metrics proposed in the literature, an evaluation of the individual visual model components have been performed. Effort has been focused on the perceptual decomposition and spatial pooling. Four perceptual decompositions have been considered. Three of them include both radial and orientation selectivity while for the fourth one, only a radial decomposition is performed. Five spatial pooling models have been associated to each of these decompositions. The first model is the most used one and consists in a simple Minkowski summation. In the second one, the Minkowski summation is weighted by the occurrence probability of the perceived errors contrast. The last three models are new and include higher level perceptual processes.

In this paper, three different perceptual masks in the wavelet domain are investigated for image watermarking systems. Along with an already existing method, we present two alternative perceptual masks based on visual detection thresholds in Y, Cb and Cr color channels and on the JPEG2000 significance coding step. A procedure to compare the perceptual masks consists on evaluating on one side, the PSNR and the S-CIELAB visual quality measure and on the other side, the detection performance by a blind watermarking scheme. Experimental results proof the better performance of the two alternative masks as well as the insights that can be derived from the comparison approach.

One application area for character recognition systems is license plate recognition. This application has advantages and disadvantages compared to document processing applications. The most significant advantage is the known font characteristics of the license plates. On the other hand, there are many disadvantages. Especially, acquiring the images from out door environments, physically dirty or damaged plates and the requisite of finding precisely the location of the plate frame increase the difficulty of the application. In order to over come these difficulties, one of the enhancements is utilizing more than one image frame and using a composition of these frames for recognition. The first task to be accomplished is tracking the frame of the plate through the video sequence. We present a theoretical and practical solution to the license plate tracking application.

In this paper, a new approach to efficient and robust super-resolution is presented. Our method is based on selectively applying a Bayesian MAP estimator to image regions with high spatial activity. The degree of spatial activity is measured using the gradient of the estimated high-resolution image at each iteration. In addition, selective filtering is applied to enhance the visual quality of the estimated high-resolution image. The results obtained via simulation and with real video sequences demonstrate up to a 50% reduction in computational complexity, with improved visual quality, and higher SNR gains for magnification factors of four or more.

In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed compression in camera sensor networks. Due to the spatial proximity of the different cameras, acquired images can be highly dependent. The correlation in the visual information retrieved is related to the structure of the plenoptic function and can be estimated using geometrical information such as the position of the cameras and some bounds on the location of the objects. We propose a distributed compression scheme that takes advantage of this geometrical information in order to reduce the overall transmission rate from the sensors to a common central receiver. This new approach allows for a flexible repartition of the transmission bit-rates amongst the encoders and is optimal in many cases. Moreover, we show that our coding scheme can be made resilient to a fixed number of occlusions and that perfect reconstruction and interpolation are possible at the receiver.
