IEE Seminar on Ultra Wideband communications Technologies and Systems Design

This paper presents the experimental results of a UWB based imaging system. Radio imaging of a room is performed using an imaging technique based upon the angle-of-arrival (AoA) information through the use of a synthetic aperture. These images are actually a visual representation of the multipaths and have the ability to distinguish between temporally stationary and varying components. The paper describes the measurement and signal processing techniques used to acquire the imaging information. This groundwork can be used for UWB indoor radio channel characterisation and also for optimal design of UWB systems that can be used in applications ranging from multipath-resistant communications systems to ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and medical imaging.

H.264/AVC, the result of the collaboration between the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group, is the latest standard for video coding. The goals of this standardization effort were enhanced compression efficiency, network friendly video representation for interactive (video telephony) and non-interactive applications (broadcast, streaming, storage, video on demand). H.264/AVC provides gains in compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards. Compared to previous standards, the decoder complexity is about four times that of MPEG-2 and two times that of MPEG-4 visual Simple Profile. This paper provides an overview of the new tools, features and complexity of H.264/AVC.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in image/video coding tailored for intelligent analysis tasks, such as image/Video Coding for Machines (ICM/VCM). These approaches have shown remarkable results when compared to human perception-based coding methods. However, point cloud coding methods for machine intelligence have not been extensively studied. Inspired by current LiDAR point cloud intelligent analysis methods which convert point cloud into bird's-eye-view (BEV) perspective, we propose an end-To-end learnt point cloud coding framework for 3D machine intelligent tasks with BEV representation, named PC4M. Specifically, the PC4M system consists of a LiDAR encoder, a learnt BEV feature codec and a BEV region proposal network with a task-specific head. To achieve better rate-distortion performance for analysis tasks, we propose an efficient Res-NeXt fusion block with powerful multi-scale modeling ability to compress sparse BEV features, and design a long-distance adaptive attention module by using VanAtten block. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-The-Art MPEG standard Geometry-based Point Cloud Coding (G-PCC) on the object detection and BEV map segmentation by 83.12% and 85.32% of BD-rate gain on nuScenes, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first end-To-end learnt task-oriented point cloud codec. © 2023 IEEE.

The current X-ray systems used by airport security personnel for the detection of contraband, and objects such as knives and guns that can impact the security of a flight, have limited effect because of the limited display quality of the X-ray images. Since the displayed images do not possess optimal contrast and sharpness, it is possible for the security personnel to miss potentially hazardous objects. This problem is also common to other disciplines such as medical Xrays, and can be mitigated, to a large extent, by the use of state-of-the-art image processing techniques to enhance the contrast and sharpness of the displayed image. The NASA Langley Research Center's visual Information processing Group has developed an image enhancement technology that has direct applications to the problem of inadequate display quality. Airport security X-ray imaging systems would benefit considerably by using this novel technology, making the task of the personnel who have to interpret the X-ray images considerably easier, faster, and more reliable. This improvement would translate into more accurate screening as well as minimizing the screening time delays to airline passengers. This technology, Retinex, has been optimized for consumer applications but has been applied to medical X-rays on a very preliminary basis. The resultant technology could be incorporated into a new breed of commercial x-ray imaging systems which would be transparent to the screener yet allow them to see subtle detail much more easily, reducing the amount of time needed for screening while greatly increasing the effectiveness of contraband detection and thus improving public safety.

In this paper, we present the work on implementation of a half-Dl interlaced MPEG-4 encoder with Equator Technology DSP chip, BSP-15. The BSP-15 DSP consists mainly of a VLIW core, Co-processors, and media I/O interfaces. The encoder utilizes several BSP-15 functional blocks in parallel. In general, the VLIW performs pixel processing that is computationally intensive. The VLx coprocessor completes variable length coding. Further parallelism is obtained by pre-loading data cache and doubling data buffers. Given the DSP processing power and real time requirements, a complexity control scheme is implemented. A frame-level quantization scheme with quality and rate control is employed. The current implementation for video at 30 fps consumes about 90% of the chip performance at a bit rate ∼2Mbps.

We describe a cell bank construction which was designed by a content-based image retrieval system using SQL database and XML for breast carcinoma images. However, the conventional pathological images for storage, management and data sharing have been done by a manual handling. We attempted to find a solution for the occurred processing problems by constructing a computerized standard system and a large dataset for the breast carcinoma images. It is possible that the system could classify the images according to the categorized cancer, text retrieval- and content-based retrieval system color- and texture features were applied. The software was designed and developed by using visual Basic and the database constructed by using SQL the extract the texture features from the images. That was then stored in XML for MPEG-7 based retrieval standard system. © 2004 IEEE.

An image is often corrupted by additive Gaussian noise during its acquisition and transmission. Denoising has to be performed on these images to retain the signal and to suppress the noise. Denoising can be performed by various methods like thresholding, filtering etc. But these methods did not consider the local space scale information of the image. Here a new type of neural network is constructed for noise reduction, where the space scale information of the image is considered. This method gives a good numerical results and also better visual effects.

Most matching methods assume that all pixels of a correlation window have equal depths and find correspondences by comparing this local window of pixels. However, this assumption is not valid at depth discontinuities and wide baseline images. In this paper, a new method to construct the local planar patches called corner-edge-regions (CERs) is introduced. Based on this adaptive plane identification method, a novel similarity measure for estimating tentative correspondence is proposed. Using this measure makes the matching system robust to severe occlusions and shrinking. The proposed matching method is tested on several wide baseline image pairs. Experimental results show our method can find more correct correspondences than other correlation window based matching methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

It is generally acknowledged that the image quality measures based or inspired by some findings on the human visual system (HVS) mechanisms are more appealing than classical measures such as the PSNR or MSE. Many HVS-based image quality assessment methods have been previously proposed. However, because of the complexity and the influence of the great number of observation parameters on the HVS-based image quality metrics there is no standard measure yet. In this paper, the image distortion metric proposed in A. Beghdadi et al. (2003) is reviewed and some improvements are suggested. This metric makes use of the joint spatial/spatial-frequency representation and applies a relatively simple nonlinear energy detection procedure. This simple distortion measure does not take into account any well-established model for the masking effect. The consistency of the proposed measure with subjective human evaluation is demonstrated on some standard image distortions.

This paper deals with the visual content adaptation, in the context of MPEG-21 standard, to help low vision users have better accessibility to the contents. The proposed adaptation targets at two low vision symptoms, loss of fine detail and lack of contrast. Specifically, we present an adaptation framework describing the problem space and then a systematic contrast-enhancement method to improve the content visibility for low vision users. The experiment results show that the proposed framework and method are effective for the low vision users.
