An MPEG-4 video coding SOC design is presented in this paper. We adopt platform-based architecture with an embedded RISC core and efficient memory organization. A motion estimator supporting predictive diamond search and spiral full search is implemented for compromise between compression performance and design cost. The proposed data reuse scheme reduces required memory access bandwidth. For texture coding path, an interleaving DCT/IDCT scheduling with substructure sharing technique is proposed. Several key modules are integrated into an efficient platform in hardware/software co-design fashion. The cost-efficient video encoder SOC consumes 256.8 mW at 40 MHz and achieves real-time encoding of 30 CIF (352×288) frames per second. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.

This paper investigates predictive coding methods to compress images represented in the Radon domain as a set of projections. Both the correlation within and between discrete Radon projections at similar angles can be exploited to achieve lossless compression, The discrete Radon projections investigated here are those used to define the Mojette transform first presented by Guedon et al. [Psychovisual image coding via an exact discrete Radon transform, in: T.W. Lance (Ed.), Proceedings of the visual communications AND image processing (VCIP), May 1995, Taipei, Taiwan, pp. 562-572]. This work is further to the preliminary investigation presented by Autrusseau et al. [Lossless compression based on a discrete and exact radon transform: a preliminary study, in: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal processing (ICASSP), vol. II, May 2006, Toulouse, France, pp. 425-428]. The I D Mojette projections are re-arranged as two dimensional images, thus allowing the use of 2D image compression techniques onto the projections. Besides the compression capabilities, the Mojette transforms brings an interesting property: a tunable redundancy. As the Mojette transform is able to both compress and add redundancy, the proposed method can be viewed as a joint lossless source-channel coding technique for images. An independent visual objects tracking is less reliable than the data association of visual objects tracking. This paper describes a tracking method based on the nearest neighbor (NN) data association, which serves lower computational than do the multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) or the Joint probabilistic data association filter (JPDAF) but gives low reliability, if the number of targets is increased. This reliability can be increased by selecting appropriate visual object model. To obtain low computation while capable of handling non-rigid object, we propose an object model which combines the threshold of accumulated object region and the object bounding box. The elements of the association matrix are the distance function that is proposed as a mixture of object models of distance function. The combinations of object models of distance function are important mechanism for determining appropriate state of object correspondence which can be divided into six groups: updated track, missing track, newly track, grouped track, merged track and complex track. The missing track is solved by the track life time criterion while the grouping, the merged and the complex track are resolved by using the proposed NN algorithm again. The experimental results are correctly shown on various situations of correspondence problem from surveillance image sequences.

Super-resolution imaging techniques reconstruct a high resolution image from a set of low resolution images that are taken from almost the same point of view. The problem can be subdivided into two main parts: an image registration part where the different input images are aligned with each other, and a reconstruction part, where the high resolution image is reconstructed from the aligned images. In this paper, we mainly consider the first step: image registration. We present three frequency domain methods to accurately align a set of undersampled images. First, we describe a registration method for images that have an aliasing-free part in their spectrum. The images are then registered using that aliasing-free part. Next, we present two subspace methods to register completely aliased images. Arbitrary undersampling factors are possible with these methods, but they have an increased computational complexity. In all three methods, we only consider planar shifts. We also show the results of these three alagorithms in simulations and practical experiments.

Previously we have presented a selective image sharpening method based on the coupled nonlinear diffusion process composed of a nonlinear diffusion term, a fidelity term and an isotropic peaking term, and it can sharpen only blurred edges without increasing the noise visibility. Our previously presented prototypal color-image sharpening methods based on the coupled nonlinear-diffusion process have been formulated on the linear color models, namely, the channel-by-channel model and the 3D vectorial model. Our prototypal methods can sharpen blurred color step edges, but they do not necessarily enhance contrasts of signal variations in complex texture image regions so well as in simple step-edge regions. To remedy the drawback, this paper extends our coupled nonlinear-diffusion color-image sharpening method to the nonlinear non-flat color model, namely, the chromaticity-brightness model, which is known to be closely relating to human color perception. We modify our time-evolution PDE's for the non-flat space of the chromaticity vector and present its digital implementations. Through experimental simulations, we compare our new color-image sharpening method based on the chromaticity-brightness model with our prototypal color-image sharpening methods based on the linear color models.

In this paper, we address the problem of video frame rate up conversion (FRC) in compressed domain. FRC is often recognized as video temporal interpolation. The problem is very challenging when targeted for a video sequence with an inconsistent camera and object motion. A novel compressed domain motion compensation scheme is presented and applied in this paper. The proposed algorithm uses MPEG-2 compressed motion vectors to undergo a cumulative spatiotemporal interpolation over a temporal sliding window of frames. An iterative rejection scheme based on the affine motion model is exploited to detect the global camera motion. Subsequently, the foreground object separation is performed by examining the temporal consistency of the output of iterative rejections. This consistency check process helps to conglomerate the resulting foreground macroblocks and weeds out the unqualified blocks, thus further refines the crude segmentation results. Finally, different strategies for compensating the camera motion and the object motion are applied to interpolate the new frames. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. Experimental results are compared with the popular block based frame interpolation approach.

This paper develops a combined space-time multiple description video coding (ST-MDVC) scheme and corresponding error concealment methods in order to adapt to error prone packet networks, especially for multiple channels. It generates four descriptions, instead of two in most other MDVC schemes, with much lower redundancy than others. The three-loop slice group MDVC approach of [8] is used to achieve spatial description splitting. MDVC is very suitable for multiple channel environments, and especially able to maintain acceptable quality when some of these channels fail completely, i.e. in an on-off MDC environment, without experiencing any drifting problem. Our MDC scheme coupled with the proposed concealment approaches proved to be suitable not only for the on-off MDC environment case (data from one channel fully lost), but also for the case where only some packets are lost from one or more channels. Several steps to achieve high performance concealments are done with the received packets. Results show the promising performance with very low redundancy for both the balanced and unbalanced channel cases. Generating four descriptions make it more adapted to multi-path scenarios.

This paper describes an image modeling scheme based on wavelet signal decomposition and statistical texture analysis, and its application in model-based image coding. In this approach, the image being considered is first decomposed into octal signal bands which contains different spectral components of the images. Based on the property of the signal decomposition statistical texture analysis techniques are hierarchically employed to separate the image into different categories with distinct modeling parameters. Coding is performed based on the texture image model.

Block artifact is a serious problem which generally emerges in video or image compression system based on block. In H.264, strength, a value which indicates the degree of block artifact, is obtained by the prediction mode, reference frames and motion vectors. However, in some cases, the de-blocking method in H.264 is not so satisfactory because of the ignorance of image behavior. According to the research of HVS (human visual system), the blockiness in flat region is much more easily observed than that in complicated region. Thus, it is needed to evalute the flatness of a particular region so as to measure the strength of blockiness. In this paper, a de-blocking method which is based on the flatness of two adjacent blocks is proposed. In the experiment, it is proved that this flatness-based de-blocking method has more superior performance than the traditional one in H.264. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a new algorithm of image de-noising. This new algorithm introduces both a new threshold function and multilevel threshold, and has not only the de-noising ability of the energy-adaptation, but also the capability of protecting edge information of image signal during the de-noising process. Simulation results based on CL2 multi-wavelet transformation indicate that the de-noising approach with both the new threshold function and multilevel threshold outperforms the previous image de-noising methods in both visual effect and signal-to-noise ratio.
