In order to solve the disadvantage of ignoring the visual feature in image retrieval, a novel method based on mutual information was presented incorporating the different sensitivity along variant directions of human visual system. Firstly, combining the visual feature with principle of the block truncation code (BTC), the significant image feature is extracted and a novel descriptor is defined. Based on the analysis of the characters of the descriptors, the mutual information is chosen to image retrieval. Compared with the other algorithms, experiments show the proposed approach has good performance.

A feature-based digital watermarking scheme for halftone image

It is a challenging work to design a robust halftone image watermarking scheme against desynchronization attacks. In this paper, we propose a feature-based digital watermarking method for halftone images with low computational complexity, good visual quality and reasonable resistance toward desynchronization attacks. Firstly, the feature points are extracted from host halftone image by using multi-scale Harris-Laplace detector, and the local feature regions (LFRs) are constructed according to the feature scale theory. Secondly, discrete Fourier transform (OFT) is performed on the LFRs, and the embedding positions (DFT coefficients) are selected adaptively according to the magnitude spectrum information. Finally, the digital watermark is embedded into the LFRs by quantizing the magnitudes of the selected DFT coefficients. By binding the watermark with the geometrically invariant halftone image features, the watermark detection can be done without synchronization error. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is invisible and robust against common signals processing such as median filtering, sharpening, noise adding, and JPEG compression, etc., and desynchronization attacks such as rotation, scaling, translation (RST), cropping, local random bend, and print-scan, etc. (C) 2009 Elsevier GmbH. This paper proposes a method for evaluating visual difference caused by decimation. In many applications it is important to evaluate visual difference of two different images. There exist many image assessment methods that utilize the human visual system (HVS), such as the visual difference predictor (VDP) and the Sarnoff visual discrimination model. In this paper, we extend and elaborate on the conventional image assessment method for the purpose of evaluating the visual difference caused by the image decimation. Our method matches actual human evaluation more and requires less computation complexity than the conventional method.

image captions represent manual semantic annotation of images. These act as essential cues to represent the semantics of an image. This paper describes the process of representing, discovering, storing the semantics in a knowledge base, and then applying the semantics to aid the retrieval of visual information. We exploit a Natural Language processing (NLP) framework in order to extract the knowledge from image captions and to transform those unstructured data into a semantic model. The novelty of the proposed framework is to use a semantic model to find implicit relationships among the concepts of photographs which are not mentioned directly in text captions. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is deployed to handle ontology imperfections. Experiments tested and validated the major hypotheses of this approach.

It is desirable and yet remains as a challenge for querying multimedia data by finding an object inside a target image. The effectiveness of region-based representation for content-based image retrieval is extensively studied in the literature. One common weakness of the region-based approaches only in terms of regions' low-level visual features is that the homogeneous image regions have little correspondence to the semantic objects, thus, the retrieval results are often far from satisfactory. In addition, the performance is also ruled by the consistency of the segmentation result of the region of the target object in the query and target images. Instead of solving these problems independently, in this paper, a region-based object retrieval using the generalized Hough transform (GHT) and content aware image segmentation is proposed. The proposed approach has two phases. First, the learning phase finds and stores the stable parameters for segmenting each database image, and then sorts the database images according to the found segmentation parameters. In the retrieval phase, an incremental image segmentation process based on the stored segmentation parameters is performed to segment a query image into regions for retrieving visual objects inside database images through the GHT with a modified voting scheme for locating the target visual object under the geometry transformation. With the learned parameters for image segmentation, the segmentation results of query and target images are more stable and consistent. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method gives good performance in terms of retrieval accuracy, robustness, and execution speed.

This paper presents a new method in the multiple constraint bit allocation for foveated visual coding. First, the foveation effect is applied to the DCT transformed coefficients in macroblocks (MBs) of images and videos. The priorities of MBs are computed based on the retina eccentricity of human eyes, which is measured in terms of the distance from foveation points. Then, prioritized image slices are formed by comparing the priority of each MB with the preset threshold and grouping MBs having close priorities. With prioritized image slices, the proposed multiple constraint bit allocation based on the modified Lagrangian optimization is applied to all image slices. There are two constraints on the bit allocation. The first constraint is the target quality requirements of image slices. The second constraint is the bit rate constraint. The proposed multiple constraint bit allocation tries its best to achieve the best overall reconstructed image quality under these two constraints. The experimental results conducted with JPEG and H.263+ compression standards show that the proposed scheme can achieve better performance than the previous work with the traditional Lagrangian optimization and obtain the required quality of image slice in both subjective and objective quality.

The end of the performance entitlement historically achieved by classic scaling of CMOS devices is within sight, driven ultimately by fundamental limits. Performance entitlements predicted by classic CMOS scaling have progressively failed to be realized in recent process generations due to excessive leakage, increasing interconnect delays and scaling of gate dielectrics. Prior to reaching fundamental limits, trends in technology, architecture and economics will pressure the industry to adopt new paradigms. A likely response is to repartition system functions away from digital implementations and into new architectures. Future architectures for visual communications will require extending the implementation into the optical and analog processing domains. The fundamental properties of these domains will in turn give rise to new architectural concepts. The limits of CMOS scaling and impact on architectures will be briefly reviewed. Alternative approaches in the optical, electronic and analog domains will then be examined for advantages, architectural impact and drawbacks.

This paper presents an energy efficient VLSI architecture for motion estimation using image processing assisted voltage overscaling (VOS). Motion estimation is the most computationally expensive block inside any video encoder, typically consuming 40-60% of the total power. This work focuses on using VOS to reduce power consumption at the expense of marginal loss of visual quality. Some image processing techniques are used to assist VOS so that a better trade-off between power and visual quality can be achieved. The design is demonstrated using full search and three step search algorithms. Simulation results in 65mn CMOS technology show that the proposed technique can save up to 30% power at the cost of 0.5dB loss of PSNR.

An attraction-repulsion expectation-maximization (AREM) algorithm for density estimation is proposed in this paper. We introduce a Gibbs distribution function for attraction and inverse Gibbs distribution for repulsion as an augmented penalty function in order to determine equilibrium between over-smoothing and over-fitting. The logarithm of the likelihood function augmented the Gibbs density mixture is solved under expectation-maximization (EM) method. We demonstrate the application of the proposed attraction-repulsion expectation-maximization algorithm to image reconstruction and sensor field estimation problem using computer simulation. We show, that the proposed algorithm improves the performance considerably.
