Decoding text, speech, or images from human neural signals holds promising potential both as neuroprosthesis for patients and as innovative communication tools for general users. Although neural signals contain various information on speech intentions, movements, and phonetic details, generating informative outputs from them remains challenging, with mostly focusing on decoding short intentions or producing fragmented outputs. In this study, we developed a diffusion model-based framework to decode visual speech intentions from speech-related non-invasive brain signals, to facilitate face-to-face neural communication. We designed an experiment to consolidate various phonemes to train visemes of each phoneme, aiming to learn the representation of corresponding lip formations from neural signals. By decoding visemes from both isolated trials and continuous sentences, we successfully reconstructed coherent lip movements, effectively bridging the gap between brain signals and dynamic visual interfaces. The results highlight the potential of viseme decoding and talking face reconstruction from human neural signals, marking a significant step toward dynamic neural communication systems and speech neuroprosthesis for patients. © 2025 IEEE.

In this demo paper, we present an Extended Reality (XR) framework providing a streamlined workflow for creating and interacting with intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) with multimodal information processing capabilities using commercially available artificial intelligence (AI) tools and cloud services such as large language and vision models. The system supports (i) the integration of high-quality, customizable virtual 3D human models for visual representations of IVAs and (ii) multimodal communication with generative AI-driven IVAs in immersive XR, featuring realistic human behavior simulations. Our demo showcases the enormous potential and vast design space of embodied IVAs for various XR applications.

Body odors play an important role in nonverbal communication, and particularly in one's attractiveness. However, their central processing remains underexplored, especially as a function of gender. This study aims at identifying the neural networks involved in the processing of two allegedly sex-specific human body odor compounds (3-hydroxy-3-methylhexanoic acid, HMHA, and 3-methyl-3-sulfanylhexan-1-ol, MSH). We hypothesized that i) these body odors would be processed by different brain regions than non-body odors, and that ii) their role in attractiveness, if any, would be indicated by the activation of specific regions and by differential verbal and neurophysiological responses in men and women. Thirty participants (15 men, 15 women) performed a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) session during which they rated the attractiveness of HMHA, MSH, and 5 non-body odorants. At the end of the session, participants rated all odors on multiple perceptual scales. HMHA activated visual (striate area and occipital gyrus) rather than olfactory brain regions. Men rated HMHA as more masculine than women did, and presented greater neural activity in the superior and medial frontal gyri while women activated the inferior frontal gyrus significantly more than men in response to this odor. MSH was processed as the other non-body odors, and not subject to gender differences. The results suggest that HMHA (not MSH) bears specific social information, resulting in a neural processing outside the main olfactory network. It is also processed differently in men and women, although our findings do not provide clear evidence in favor of relevance for one's attractiveness.

This paper evaluates the quantization process in the context of the end-to-end performance of the visual-communication channel. Results show that the trade-off between data transmission and visual quality revolves around the information in the acquired signal, not around its energy. Improved information efficiency is gained by frequency dependent quantization that maintains the information capacity of the channel and reduces the entropy of the encoded signal. Restorations with energy bit-allocation lose both in sharpness and clarity relative to restorations with information bit-allocation. Thus, quantization with information bit-allocation is preferred for high information efficiency and visual quality in optimized visual communication.

We study the ability to derive meaningful information from decompressed imaging spectrometer data. Each hyperspectral band is linearly predicted by a previously transmitted band. The residual, formed by subtracting the prediction from the original data is compressed either with a near-lossless bit plane coder or with the lossy JPEG2000 algorithm. We investigate the effects of these two compression methods on hyperspectral image processing using whole-and mixed-pixel analysis techniques. Surprisingly, the lossy coder outperforms near-lossless method in terms of its impact on final hyperspectral data applications.

Cross-modal Interactions during Perception of Audiovisual Speech and Nonspeech Signals: An fMRI Study

During speech communication, visual information may interact with the auditory system at various processing stages. Most noteworthy, recent magnetoencephalography (MEG) data provided first evidence for early and preattentive phonetic/phonological encoding of the visual data stream-prior to its fusion with auditory phonological features [Hertrich, I., Mathiak, K., Lutzenberger, W., & Ackermann, H. Time course of early audiovisual interactions during speech and non-speech central-auditory processing: An MEG study. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 21, 259-274, 2009]. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, the present follow-up study aims to further elucidate the topographic distribution of visual-phonological operations and audiovisual (AV) interactions during speech perception. Ambiguous acoustic syllables-disambiguated to /pa/ or /ta/ by the visual channel (speaking face)-served as test materials, concomitant with various control conditions (nonspeech AV signals, visual-only and acoustic-only speech, and nonspeech stimuli). (i) visual speech yielded an AV-subadditive activation of primary auditory cortex and the anterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), whereas the posterior STG responded both to speech and nonspeech motion. (ii) The inferior frontal and the fusiform gyrus of the right hemisphere showed a strong phonetic/phonological impact (differential effects of visual /pa/ vs. /ta/) upon hemodynamic activation during presentation of speaking faces. Taken together with the previous MEG data, these results point at a dual-pathway model of visual speech information processing: On the one hand, access to the auditory system via the anterior supratemporal "what" path may give rise to direct activation of "auditory objects." On the other hand, visual speech information seems to be represented in a right-hemisphere visual working memory, providing a potential basis for later interactions with auditory information such as the McGurk effect.

Computer imaging technology is a kind of use of digital photography, using a computer as amedium to realize interactive communication and interaction between humans and machines through the collection and processing of images and the editing and storage of graphic information. The purpose of this paper to study the design of the 3D image visual communication system based on computer image technology is to improve the mastery of 3D image technology and design the visual communication system. This article mainly uses experimental and comparative methods to analyze the feature extraction situation of the 3D image visual communication system, and finds that the error of the improved RANSAC algorithm in image feature extraction is about 54%, while the unimproved algorithm and other algorithms The error is greater. This shows that the improved algorithm proposed in this paper is incomparable in the 3D image visual communication system.

This research sought to understand the role of physical environments on information processing, in the context of psychiatric help-seeking communication. Guided by theories and research in design, communication, and psychology, this dissertation examines how environmental stressors may hinder message processing and how message design strategies may overcome the negative influence of environmental stressors (Study One) and how environmental stressors may hinder message processing in a virtual environment (Study Two). It investigates how the noise and visual clutter we frequently encounter shape our processing of messages in a real (Study One) and virtual environment (Study Two): an area of research which researchers traditionally look at in a “clean” or “experimental” setting. The studies, divided into two chapters, were designed to be developed as a test of concept in a contrived setting (Chapter ii) and a virtual reality (VR) setting (Chapter iiI). Guided by the Elaboration Likelihood Model and the concept of congruency, Chapter ii investigates a promising avenue to overcome the effect of noise pollution on outcomes related to mental health: how message-environment congruency can be an approach in designing strategic messages. Chapter iiI examines the influence of auditory disorder on state anxiety and message elaboration, the influence of visual disorder on cognitive capacity and message elaboration, and the potential “bundling” effect of auditory disorder and visual disorder on health risk-perception. Chapter ii presents the novel finding that message-environment congruency can enhance message elaboration of psychiatric help-seeking information among first-year undergraduate students, supporting evidence garnered in other domains such as advertising and consumer psychology, that viewers can be primed or nudged to view specific information. We assess redundancy reduction in image coding in terms of the information acquired by the image-gathering process and the amount of data required to convey this information. A clear distinction is made between the theoretically minimum rate of data transmission, as measured by the entropy of the completely decorrelated data, and the actual rate of data transmission, as measured by the entropy of the encoded (incompletely decorrelated) data. It is shown that the information efficiency of the visual communication channel depends not only on the characteristics of the radiance field and the decorrelation algorithm, as is generally perceived, but also on the design of the image-gathering device, as is commonly ignored.
