This paper describes about the design, construction and control of an "Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Vision Based Tracking", built in Vignan's Institute of Information Technology, Centre for Innovation Lab. The underwater vision robot is essentially an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for study of marine animals by automatically tracking and following them using computer vision. The AUV can also be used as a platform for Photo-mapping of the Seafloor using the onboard camera and light arrangement. The robot is proposed to have 5 thrusters configurations to achieve 4 degrees of freedom controlled by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) interfaced with control unit and powered by commercial LiPo battery packs. The robot is equipped with roll, pitch, heading, and depth sensors which provide sufficient feedback signals to automatically control the vehicle to track a pre-planned trajectory. The centre of gravity and centre of buoyancy of the vehicle are positioned in such a way that it is self-stabilized. Along with this the combinations of sensors and speed control drivers provide more stability to the system using a closed loop control system, without the operator involvement. The AUV also captures videos during its mission using the camera. It is planned to have a multi-core umbilical cable for video signal, water leakage alarm, feedback signals and battery charging lines. This will be only used for development and test purposes and will be removed during autonomous missions. Various control schemes can be applied for the vehicle to track different paths. The AUV is designed to the dimension of 575x210x175mm. The AUV uses O-rings for the hulls for good water sealing effect as well as for faster assembly and disassembly. We expect this AUV development to mature in to an advanced system can be used as a platform for study of the ocean by scientists, for environmental studies and for defense applications. With the increase of image datasets size and of descriptors complexity in Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) and Computer Vision, it is essential to find a way to limit the amount of manipulated data, while keeping its quality. Instead of treating the entire image, the selection of regions which hold the essence of information is a relevant option to reach this goal. As the visual saliency aims at highlighting the areas of the image which are the most important for a given task, in this paper we propose to exploit visual saliency maps to prune the most salient image features. A novel visual saliency approach based on the local distribution analysis of the edges orientation, particularly dedicated to structured contents, such as street view images of urban environments, is proposed. It is evaluated for CBIR according to three criteria: quality of retrieval, volume of manipulated features and computation time. The proposal can be exploited into various applications involving large sets of local visual features;here it is experimented within two applications: cross-domain image retrieval and image-based vehicle localisation.

Low-power GPUs have become ubiquitous, they can be found in domains ranging from wearable and mobile computing to automotive systems. With this ubiquity has come a wider range of applications exploiting low-power GPUs, placing ever increasing demands on the expected performance and power efficiency of the devices. The LPGPU(2) project is an EU-funded, Innovation Action, 30-month-project targeting to develop an analysis and visualization framework that enables GPU application developers to improve the performance and power consumption of their applications. To this end, the project follows a holistic approach. First, several applications (use cases) are being developed for or ported to low-power GPUs. These applications will be optimized using the tooling framework in the last phase of the project. In addition, power measurement devices and power models are devised that are 10x more accurate than the state of the art. The ultimate goal of the project is to promote open vendor-neutral standards via the Khronos group. This paper briefly reports on the achievements made in the first phase of the project (till month 18) and focuses on the progress made in applications;in power measurement, estimation, and modelling;and in the analysis and visualization tool suite.

Artificial neural networks, such as the multilayer perceptron (MLP), have been increasingly employed in various applications. Recently, deep neural networks, specially convolutional neural networks (CNN), have received considerable attention due to their ability to extract and represent high-level abstractions in data sets. This article describes a vision inspection system based on deep learning and computer vision algorithms for detection of algae in underwater pipelines. The proposed algorithm comprises a CNN or a MLP network, followed by a post-processing stage operating in spatial and temporal domains, employing clustering of neighboring detection positions and a region interception framebuffer. The performances of MLP, employing different descriptors, and CNN classifiers are compared in real-world scenarios. It is shown that the post-processing stage considerably decreases the number of false positives, resulting in an accuracy rate of 99.39%.

Traditional metrics for evaluating the efficacy of image processing techniques do not lend themselves to understanding the capabilities and limitations of modern image processing methods - particularly those enabled by deep learning. When applying image processing in engineering solutions, a scientist or engineer has a need to justify their design decisions with clear metrics. By applying blind/referenceless image spatial quality (BRISQUE), Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) index scores, and Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) to images before and after image processing, we can quantify quality improvements in a meaningful way and determine the lowest recoverable image quality for a given method.

In this work, eye pupil center estimation was performed by using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) from deep learning methods which are mentioned frequently in the field of machine learning recently, without need for any special hardware. 64x64 image patches created with four different scales were trained through the Caffe framework using the AlexNet model, which was arranged according to its input image. The distances from patch center to eye pupil center were used as class labels in train phase. In the test phase, distance classes were produced by giving four-scaled image patches formed by points using sliding window approach in eye area as an input to the trained model. The center of eye pupil was estimated by taking the weighted average of those points which have distance classes near to zero. The recommended technique achieved more successful results than similar state of the art techniques in the literature according to the results of experiments using BioID dataset.

As a general rule, data analytics are now mandatory for companies. Scanned document analysis brings additional challenges introduced by paper damages and scanning quality. In an industrial context, this work focuses on the automatic understanding of sale receipts which enable access to essential and accurate consumption statistics. Given an image acquired with a smart-phone, the proposed work mainly focuses on the first steps of the full tool chain which aims at providing essential information such as the store brand, purchased products and related prices with the highest possible confidence. To get this high confidence level, even if scanning is not perfectly controlled, we propose a double check processing tool-chain using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) on one hand and more classical image and text processings on another hand. The originality of this work relates in this double check processing and in the joint use of DCNNs for different applications and text analysis.

Modern computer architectures are mainly composed of multi-core processors and GPUs. Consequently, solely providing a sequential implementation of algorithms or comparing algorithm performance without regard to architecture is no longer pertinent. Today, algorithms have to address parallelism, multithreading and memory topology (private/shared memory, cache or scratchpad, ...). Most Connected Component Labeling (CCL) algorithms are sequential, direct and optimized for processors. Few were designed specifically for GPU architectures and none were designed to be adapted to different architectures. The most efficient GPU implementations are iterative;in order to manage synchronizations between processing units, but the number of iterations depends on the image shape and density. This paper describes the DLP (Distanceless Label Propagation) algorithms, an adaptable set of algorithms usable both on GPU and multi-core architectures, and DLP-GPU, an efficient direct CCL algorithm for GPU based on DLP mechanisms.

Qmazda is a package of software tools for digital image analysis. They compute shape, color and texture attributes in arbitrary regions of interest, implement selected algorithms of discriminant analysis and machine learning, and enable texture based image segmentation. The algorithms generalize a concept of texture to three-dimensional data to enable analysis of volumetric images from magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scanners. The tools support a complete workflow from image examples as an input to classification rules as an output. The extracted knowledge can be further used in custom made image analysis systems. Here we also present an application of QMaZda to identify defective barley kernels. The cereal seeds variability is high, therefore, characterization and discriminant analysis of such the biological objects is challenging and non-trivial. The software is available free of charge and open source, with executables for Windows, Linux and OS x platforms.

Being able to rapidly detect clouds in satellite imagery is critical in terms of increasing mission efficiency of ground observation satellites. In this work, a new approach has been proposed for cloud detection involving the utilisation of lowfrequency Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) components whose sizes are 1/64 of the original image sizes. In the proposed method, several texture features are calculated from the low-frequency DWT components and the cloud pixels are detected by using a KNearest Neighbors (KNN) classifier. The proposed method has been tested on the Gokturk-2 images. Since the utilization of lowfrequency components leads to a significant loss in detail;the cloud detection performance have decreased to some extent. Nevertheless the obtained results were found to be sufficient for determining the cloudiness rate at a small margin of error, and at approximately 145x increased processing speed.
