In video-surveillance, person re-identification is described as the task of recognizing distinct individuals over a network of cameras. It is an extremely challenging task since visual appearances of people can change significantly when viewed in different cameras. Many person re-identification methods offer distinct advantages over each other in terms of robustness to lighting, scale and pose variations. Keeping this consideration in mind, this paper proposes an effective new person re-identification model which incorporates several recent state-of-the-art feature extraction methodologies such as GOG, WHOS and LOMO features into a single framework. Effectiveness of each feature type is estimated and optimal weights for the similarity measurements are assigned through a multiple metric learning method. The proposed re-identification approach is then tested on multiple benchmark person re-identification datasets where it outperforms many other state-of-the-art methodologies.

Accurate identification of different components of a developing human embryo play crucial roles in assessing the quality of such embryo. One of the most important components of a day-5 human embryo is Inner Cell Mass (ICM). ICM is a part of an embryo that will eventually develop into a fetus. In this paper, an automatic coarse-to-fine texture based approach presented to identify regions of an embryo corresponding to the ICM. First, blastocyst area corresponding to the textured regions is recognized using Gabor and DCT features. Next, two ICM localization approaches are introduced to identify a rough estimate of the ICM location. Finally, the boundaries of the ICM region is finalized using a region based level-set. Experimental results on a data set of 220 day-5 human embryo images confirm that the proposed method is capable of identifying ICM with average Precision, Recall, and Jaccard Index of 78.7%, 86.8%, and 70.3%, respectively.

The aim of the present study is to propose a new joint segmentation method dedicated to plantar foot thermal images. The proposed method is based on a modified active contour method (Snake) that includes a prior shape information, namely an atlas of the plantar foot contour, as an extra term in the Snake energy function. This term guides the Snake to the targeted contours during the deformation process, by calculating a curvature difference between the Snake curve and the atlas curve of the plantar foot surface. The proposed method was validated using a database of 50 plantar foot thermal images. Results showed the proposed method to outperform the classical Snake method and seven other recent methods. The comparison was done using two evaluation metrics, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the dice similarity coefficient (DSC). When compared to ground truth, the best average RMSE of 6 pixels and DSC score of 93% were obtained using the proposed method.

In semiconductor industry it is of paramount importance to check whether a manufactured device fulfills all quality specifications and is therefore suitable for being sold to the customer. The occurrence of specific spatial patterns within the so-called wafer test data, i.e. analog electric measurements, might point out on production issues. However, the shape of these critical patterns is unknown. In this paper different kinds of process patterns are extracted from wafer test data by an image processing approach using Markov Random Field models for image restoration. The goal is to develop an automated procedure to identify visible patterns in wafer test data to improve pattern matching. This step is a necessary precondition for a subsequent root-cause analysis of these patterns. The developed pattern extraction algorithm yields a more accurate discrimination between distinct patterns, resulting in an improved pattern comparison than in the original dataset. In a next step pattern classification will be applied to improve the production process control.

With the development of cloud computing, the growth in information technology has led to serious security issues. For this reason, a lot of multimedia files are stored in encrypted forms. Methods of reversible data hiding in encrypted images (RDHEI) have been designed to provide authentication and integrity in the encrypted domain. The original image is firstly encrypted to ensure confidentiality, by making the content unreadable. A secret message is then embedded in the encrypted image, without the need of the encryption key or any access to the clear content. The challenge lies in finding the best tradeoff between embedding capacity and quality of the reconstructed image. In 2008, Puech et al. suggested using the AES algorithm to encrypt an original image and to embed one bit in each block of 16 pixels (payload = 0.0625 bpp) [12]. During the decryption phase, the original image is reconstructed by measuring the standard deviation into each block. In this paper, we propose an improvement to this method, by performing an adaptive local entropy measurement. We can achieve a larger payload without altering the recovered image quality. Our obtained results are very good and better than most of the modern state-of-the-art methods, whilst offering an improved security level with the use of the AES algorithm, defined as the encryption standard by the NIST.

In this paper, we propose a filtering algorithm that can extract lesions by using lesion feature points based on medical images. We use representative feature extraction methods for lesion recognition based on extraction of shape features and feature points from lesion patterns. I suggest. The preprocessing process of medical image processing removes unnecessary noise from complex medical images and performs the binary-coded process by effectively separating lesions from them. The feature points are extracted from the lesion objects extracted with various shapes and sizes and the image outline is detected after normalization. It has an advantage that it can be extended to global features by comparing similarities between different vectors existing among various medical images. In addition, compared with the existing methods, the proposed method improves the error rate of the lesion matching by 1.02% on average and the processing speed of the medical image of 512 x 512 in the experiment by about 40%.

Texture analysis of digital images has potential applications to image segmentation and classification. The quality of texture features can significantly determine the outcome of these two important applications. For images that consist of textures defined as patterns of straight lines, the use of features extracted using the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) is a popular choice. For each line that has a particular slope, one has to define a different predicate so that the matrix can capture that particular part of the texture. On the other hand, the Hough transform is a popular technique that detects lines that appear at different angles. We proposed an innovative way to extract texture information from the Hough accumulator using four income inequality metrics for patterns consisting of lines at different angles. We showed that when compared to four common texture metrics extracted from the GLCM, these new features can offer better quality. We used a feature selection algorithm and a classification example to illustrate the results obtained using these new income inequality texture metrics.

The multiresolution approximation decomposes an image in scales or frequency bands. The knowledge of the image power distribution in these bands is therefore important for understanding the performance of image processing algorithms. However the spectra calculated in the wavelet domain depend on the characteristics of the wavelet selected and the method used to extend the image. This extension must be done before convolving the image with the wavelet decomposition filters. On the other hand, the calculated spectrum depends on the number of vanishing moments of the wavelet and the symmetry of the wavelet filters. In this work the Fourier power spectrum and the power spectrum in the wavelet domain are compared for one ensemble of images. Highly non-symmetric Daubechies and very symmetric symlet wavelets of different vanishing moments N-v are used in combination with different extension methods. The best matching between spectrums is found for symlet wavelets and symmetric padding extension. Also, removing the extended part of the subbands before the power calculation improves the result.

We explore the problem of classification within a medical image data-set based on a feature vector extracted from the deepest layer of pre-trained Convolution Neural Networks. We have used feature vectors from several pre-trained structures, including networks with/without transfer learning to evaluate the performance of pre-trained deep features versus CNNs which have been trained by that specific dataset as well as the impact of transfer learning with a small number of samples. All experiments are done on Kimia Path24 dataset which consists of 27,055 histopathology training patches in 24 tissue texture classes along with 1,325 test patches for evaluation. The result shows that pre-trained networks are quite competitive against training from scratch. As well, fine-tuning does not seem to add any tangible improvement for VGG16 to justify additional training while we observed considerable improvement in retrieval and classification accuracy when we fine-tuned the Inception structure.

Multisensor image fusion (e.g. IR with visual) is the process of combining relevant information from two or more images into a single image. The aim is to find an objective quality measure, which can be used in automatic applications, that correlates best with subjective observer trials. Not all combinations of image, algorithm, and test observer can be worked out. In this paper R. Fisher's Design of Experiments approach based on Latin Squares is used for thinning out the number of experiments for each observer in such observer trials while preserving exactness and reliability of the result.
