A common way for solving the denosing problem is to utilize the total variation (TV) regularization. Many efficient numerical algorithms have been developed for solving the TV regularization problem. Condat described a fast direct algorithm to compute the processed 1D signal. Also there exists a direct algorithm with a linear time for 1D TV denoising referred to as the taut string algorithm. The Condat's algorithm is based on a dual problem to the 1D TV regularization. In this paper, we propose a variant of the Condat's algorithm based on the direct 1D TV regularization problem. The usage of the Condat's algorithm with the taut string approach leads to a clear geometric description of the extremal function. Computer simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm for restoration of degraded signals.

The following paper depicts an architectural layout and operational insights towards an optoelectronic system dedicated for vehicle counting and classification, designed to monitor occupancy of rest areas. The system is based upon an image cue acquisition by video cameras and advanced signal processing mechanism. In order to satisfy the appropriate realization of measurement procedure (counting and classification), a specific measurement configuration scheme alongside optimized video stream capturing parameters were set up. Concerning signal processing methods, the most effective and appropriate for the purpose of vehicle counting and classification were selected. Moreover, the article presents the outcomes of the designed measurement campaign conducted on the S7 expressway within the agenda of the National Center for Research and Development RID project. The results obtained with use of the designed methodology were compared to the outcomes of the manual method.

Although HDR content processing, coding and quality assessment have been largely addressed in the last few years, little to no work has been concentrating on how to assess quality in HDR for 360 or omnidirectional content. This paper is an attempt to answer to various questions in this direction. As a minimum, a new data set for 360 HDR content is proposed and a new methodology is designed to assess subjective quality of HDR 360 content when it is displayed on SDR HMD after applying various tone mapping operators. The results are then analyzed and conclusions are drawn.

It is known that images available usually undergo some stages of processing (e.g., acquisition, compression, transmission and display), and each stage may introduce certain type of distortion. Hence, images distorted by multiple types of distortions are common in real applications. Research in human visual perception has evidenced that the human visual system (HVS) is sensitive to image structural information. This fact inspires us to design a new blind/no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) method to evaluate the visual quality of multiply-distorted images based on structural degradation. Specifically, quality-aware features are extracted from both the first-and high-order image structures by local binary pattern (LBP) operators. Experimental results on two well-known multiply-distorted image databases demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed method.

Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) is a super-resolution technique which enables to enhance the resolution of optical microscopes beyond the diffraction limit. The final super-resolution image quality strongly depends on the performance of SIM image reconstruction. Standard SIM methods require precise knowledge of the illumination pattern and assume the sample to be stationary during the acquisition of illumination patterned images. In the case of imaging live cells, the movements of the cell result in the occurrence of image reconstruction artifacts. To reduce this kind of artifacts the short acquisition time is needed. However, short exposure time causes low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, a drift of the specimen may distort the illumination pattern properties in each image. This issue together with the low SNR makes the estimation of reconstruction parameters a challenging task. Inaccurate assessment of spatial frequency, phase shift or orientation of the illumination pattern leads to incorrect separation and shift of spectral components in Fourier space. This results in unwanted image reconstruction artifacts and hampers the resolution enhancement in practice. In this paper, we analyze possible artifacts in super-resolution images reconstructed using super-resolution SIM technique (SR-SIM). An overview of typical image reconstruction artifact types is presented. Distinguishing image artifacts from newly resolved sample features is essential for future SIM applications in cell biology.

With the rapid development of remote sensing imaging technology, the micro satellite, one kind of tiny spacecraft, appears during the past few years. A good many studies contribute to dwarfing satellites for imaging purpose. Generally speaking, micro satellites weigh less than 100 kilograms, even less than 50 kilograms, which are slightly larger or smaller than the common miniature refrigerators. However, the optical system design is hard to be perfect due to the satellite room and weight limitation. In most cases, the unprocessed data captured by the imager on the microsatellite cannot meet the application need. Spatial resolution is the key problem. As for remote sensing applications, the higher spatial resolution of images we gain, the wider fields we can apply them. Consequently, how to utilize super resolution (SR) and image fusion to enhance the quality of imagery deserves studying. Our team, the Key Laboratory of Computational Optical Imaging Technology, Academy Opto-Electronics, is devoted to designing high-performance microsat-borne imagers and high-efficiency image processing algorithms. This paper addresses a multispectral image enhancement framework for space-borne imagery, jointing the pan-sharpening and super resolution techniques to deal with the spatial resolution shortcoming of microsatellites. We test the remote sensing images acquired by Cx6-02 satellite and give the SR performance. The experiments illustrate the proposed approach provides high-quality images.

Point clouds are a promising alternative for immersive representation of visual contents. Recently, an increased interest has been observed in the acquisition, processing and rendering of this modality. Although subjective and objective evaluations are critical in order to assess the visual quality of media content, they still remain open problems for point cloud representation. In this paper we focus our efforts on subjective quality assessment of point cloud geometry, subject to typical types of impairments such as noise corruption and compression-like distortions. In particular, we propose a subjective methodology that is closer to real-life scenarios of point cloud visualization. The performance of the state-of-the-art objective metrics is assessed by considering the subjective scores as the ground truth. Moreover, we investigate the impact of adopting different test methodologies by comparing them. Advantages and drawbacks of every approach are reported, based on statistical analysis. The results and conclusions of this work provide useful insights that could be considered in future experimentation.

A new technique of Mueller-matrix mapping of polycrystalline structure of histological sections of biological tissues is suggested. The algorithms of reconstruction of distribution of parameters of linear and circular dichroism of histological sections liver tissue of mice with different degrees of severity of diabetes are found. The interconnections between such distributions and parameters of linear and circular dichroism of liver of mice tissue histological sections are defined. The comparative investigations of coordinate distributions of parameters of amplitude anisotropy formed by Liver tissue with varying severity of diabetes (10 days and 24 days) are performed. The values and ranges of change of the statistical (moments of the 1st - 4th order) parameters of coordinate distributions of the value of linear and circular dichroism are defined. The objective criteria of cause of the degree of severity of the diabetes differentiation are determined.

In this paper a compact modified Rectangular Dielectric Resonator antenna (MRDRA) and its array with microstrip feeding is proposed for x-Band application. The single element MRDRA is designed using either a circular slot or a rectangular slot to achieve higher bandwidth. These two types of MRDRAs operate at 10 GHz frequency. In comparison to rectangular slot MRDRA, Circular slot MRDRA provides better gain and impedance bandwidth i.e. 6.24 dBi and 37 `)/0 respectively. Similarly, either a Circular slot or a rectangular slot four element MRDRA array is designed to achieve higher gain and better impedance bandwidth. In comparison to MRDRA with rectangular slot provides a gain of 9.38 dBi and impedance bandwidth of 17 `)/0. All these modified RDRA were designed using high frequency simulation software(HFSS). It is suitable for applications such as satellite, ultra wideband communication(UWB) where in modulated image signal can be received.

Band selection (BS) is one of the most important topics in hyperspectral image (HSI) processing. The objective of BS is to find a set of representative bands that can represent the whole image with lower inter-band redundancy. Many types of BS algorithms were proposed in the past. However, most of them can be carried on in an off-line manner. It means that they can only be implemented on the pre-collected data. Those off-line based methods are sometime useless for those applications that are timeliness, particular in disaster prevention and target detection. To tackle this issue, a new concept, called progressive sample processing (PSP), was proposed recently. The PSP is an "on-line" framework where the specific type of algorithm can process the currently collected data during the data transmission under band-interleavedby- sample/pixel (BIS/BIP) protocol. This paper proposes an online BS method that integrates a sparse-based BS into PSP framework, called PSP-BS. In PSP-BS, the BS can be carried out by updating BS result recursively pixel by pixel in the same way that a Kalman filter does for updating data information in a recursive fashion. The sparse regression is solved by orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, and the recursive equations of PSP-BS are derived by using matrix decomposition. The experiments conducted on a real hyperspectral image show that the PSP-BS can progressively output the BS status with very low computing time. The convergence of BS results during the transmission can be quickly achieved by using a rearranged pixel transmission sequence. This significant advantage allows BS to be implemented in a real time manner when the HSI data is transmitted pixel by pixel.
