Decreasing size of CMOS technology plays a key role in embedding more and more functionalities in CMOS image sensors. By integrating sensing with processing, new types of CMOS imaging systems can be designed and applied in domains such as machine vision, surveillance, or medical imaging. Digital pixel sensors (DPSs) are a good example of smart vision chips including image capturing and processing modules. Indeed, they incorporate, for each pixel, parallel analog-to-digital conversion thus allowing performing such conversion in early stages. Moreover, DPSs offer several benefits such as an improved SNR (signal Noise Ratio) and a wider dynamic range. In addition, the emergence of new technologies, typically CMOS 3D-IC technology, offers the opportunity to reduce pixel area and improve fill factor, making DPSs suitable for numerous fields of applications. This paper presents a digital pixel sensor (DPS) integrating an in-pixel sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The digital pixel includes a photodiode, a delta-sigma modulation and a digital decimation filter, featuring high-speed conversion, programmable resolutions (up to 10-bit). Based on the CMOS 130 nm 3D-IC Tezzaron technology, an optimized design of the pixel is provided, revealing a high fill-factor of about 90%.

In this work, we present the framework surrounding the development of a mmW radar image-based algorithm for wire recognition and classification for rotorcraft operation in degraded visual environments. While a mmW sensor image lacks the optical resolution and perspective of an IR or LIDAR sensor, it currently presents the only true see-through mitigation under the heaviest of degraded vision conditions. Additionally, the mmW sensor produces a high-resolution, radar map that has proven to be exceedingly interpretable, especially to a familiar operator. Seizing on these clear advantages, the mmW radar image-based algorithm is trained and evaluated against independent mmW imagery data collected from a live flight test in a relevant environment. The foundation of our approach is based on image processing and machine learning techniques utilizing radar-based signal properties and sensor and platform information for added robustness. We discuss some of the requirements and practical challenges of a standalone algorithm development, and lastly, present some preliminary examples using existing development tools and discuss the path for continued advancement and evaluation.

A new technique of Mueller-matrix mapping of polycrystalline structure of histological sections of biological tissues is suggested. The algorithms of reconstruction of distribution of parameters of linear and circular birefringence of prostate histological sections are found. The interconnections between such distributions and parameters of linear and circular birefringence of prostate tissue histological sections are defined. The comparative investigations of coordinate distributions of phase anisotropy parameters formed by fibrillar networks of prostate tissues of different pathological states (adenoma and carcinoma) are performed. The values and ranges of change of the statistical (moments of the 1st - 4th order) parameters of coordinate distributions of the value of linear and circular birefringence are defined. The objective criteria of cause of Benign and malignant conditions differentiation are determined.

Down-looking synthetic aperture imaging ladar have bidirectional (positive and negative direction) modulation in the orthogonal direction of travel during phase modulation. The return signal can be also collected in the two directions. The imaging processing with bidirectional modulation is used and demonstrated. The signal-to-noise ratio can be enhanced in this mode synthetic aperture imaging ladar. Meanwhile, the velocity of carrying-platform can be faster. In the experiment, the return signals with bidirectional modulation are stacked and rebuilt. Compared to the unidirectional modulation imaging, the faster and clearer imaging is realized with bidirectional modulation. This technique has a great potential for applications in extensive synthetic aperture imaging ladar fields.

In recent years, light field has experienced a surge of popularity, mainly due to the recent advances in acquisition and rendering technologies that have made it more accessible to the public. Thanks to image-based rendering techniques, light field contents can be rendered in real time on common 2D screens, allowing virtual navigation through the captured scenes in an interactive fashion. However, this richer representation of the scene poses the problem of reliable quality assessments for light field contents. In particular, while subjective methodologies that enable interaction have already been proposed, no work has been done on assessing how users interact with light field contents. In this paper, we propose a new framework to subjectively assess the quality of light field contents in an interactive manner and simultaneously track users behaviour. The framework is successfully used to perform subjective assessment of two coding solutions. Moreover, statistical analysis performed on the results shows interesting correlation between subjective scores and average interacton time.

Pedestrian detection for surveillance video, which is the basic of person re-identification, aims to capture the pedestrians in the monitors. However, the existing pedestrian detection algorithms still have two issues: (1) The recall and precision are not applicable for complicated scenes;(2) It is limited for processing the high-resolution video in real-time. Therefore, pedestrian detection algorithm based on imbalance prior for surveillance video is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the structure of pedestrian is described with a color difference based image edge detection algorithm, namely color difference map (CDM). Then, the imbalance prior is proposed and used for coarse classification. Finally, the refine classification is implemented by "HOG+SVM" method. The experimental results on FHD-175 dataset show that the recall and precision of the proposed algorithm are 96.0% and 99.0% respectively. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can process the 1920x1080 frame at the speed of 20.73 fps on average, which can satisfy the requirement of real time processing.

In this paper, fuzzy supervisor of PID controller for ball balancing on a Stewart platform (ball and plate system) was implemented. Small-size Stewart platform was built and used for demonstrating the application of the controller. HD web camera was the visual sensor for sensing the ball position. After image processing, by using color threshold and object detection, the ball position was a feedback signal of the controller. In ball balancing control problem, the x-direction and y-direction can be decentralized and are separated into two PID control loops. Conventional PID control might give poor performance due to nonlinearity such as friction and error from the visual tracking. Model-based control design is complicated and could be suffered from modeling uncertainties. Fuzzy controller, which is a nonlinear control, is chosen to resolve the problem. By the way, the PID controller can be enhanced by using a fuzzy supervisory system. By using a few human intuitive rules, from ball speed and ball location, control performance can be improved. Each PID controller gains were adjusted by the fuzzy supervisor. The controller generated the pitch and roll references. The reference signals were transformed to six servo motor set-points by using the inverse kinematics of the platform. PID position controllers were used for the six servo motors. The ball position results showed enhancement by the proposed control system.

Precise location of laser spot in laser precision measurement is always an important research direction. Laser has the characteristics of good direction and small divergence, so it is widely used in aerospace, weapon systems and optical measuring and testing instruments. The accuracy of the laser spot center location can directly determine the precision of measurement. Aiming at positioning the center of laser spot, in the foundation of researching the limitation of the practical application of the common laser spot center location algorithm, this paper proposes a method of laser spot center localization based on sub-pixel interpolation, which can effectively improve the signal noise ratio (SNR) of laser spot image, reduce the influence of the background noise and thermal noise. The algorithm firstly uses the threshold value decision to exclude the interference of the light of the image, and then use the improved sub-pixel interpolation algorithm for image edge detection to obtain the edge image, and finally using the circle fitting method to obtain the positioning center. Through the experiment of processing of laser spot image, the results show that improved algorithm proposed in this paper has higher positioning accuracy than the traditional centroid, and satisfies the need of laser precision measurement in reliability, positioning accuracy and noise resistance and other aspects, at the same time, the computational complexity of this algorithm is low, can greatly save the system resources, and it can be used for the processing of the video images in the hardware and software.

The very high spectral resolution of Hyperspectral images (HSIs) enables the identification of materials with subtle differences and the extraction subpixel information. However, the increasing of spectral resolution often implies an increasing in the noise linked with the image formation process. This degradation mechanism limits the quality of extracted information and its potential applications. Since HSIs represent natural scenes and their spectral channels are highly correlated, they are characterized by a high level of self-similarity and are well approximated by low-rank representations. These characteristic underlies the state-of-the-art in HSI denoising. However, in presence of rare pixels, the denoising performance of those methods is not optimal and, in addition, it may compromise the future detection of those pixels. To address these hurdles, we introduce RhyDe (Robust hyperspectral Denoising), a powerful HSI denoiser, which implements explicit low-rank representation, promotes self-similarity, and, by using a form of collaborative sparsity, preserves rare pixels. The denoising and detection effectiveness of the proposed robust HSI denoiser is illustrated using semi-real data.

Three-dimensional imaging is increasingly becoming important in a number of applications that observe and analyze real-world environments. Range sensors, such as flash imaging Lidar and Time-of-flight camera, which can deliver high-accuracy range measurement images, but are limited by the low resolution. To overcome this limitation, this paper shows the benefit of multimodal sensor system, combining a low-resolution range sensor with a high-resolution optical sensor, in order to provide a high-resolution, low-noise range image of the scene. First, an extrinsic calibration algorithm is used to align the range map with optical image. Then, an image-guided algorithm is proposed to solve the super-resolution optimization problem. This algorithm using the Markov Random Field framework. It defines an energy function that combines a standard quadratic data term and a regularizing term with the weighting factors that relate optical image edges to range map edges. Experiments on synthetic and real data are provided and analyzed to validate this method. The result confirms that the quality of the estimated high-resolution range map is improved. This work can be extended for video super-resolution with the consideration of temporal coherence.
