Sparse coding has achieved a great success in various image processing studies. However, there is not any benchmark to measure the sparsity of image patch/group because sparse discriminant conditions cannot keep unchanged. This paper analyzes the sparsity of group based on the strategy of the rank minimization. Firstly, an adaptive dictionary for each group is designed. Then, we prove that group-based sparse coding is equivalent to the rank minimization problem, and thus the sparse coefficients of each group are measured by estimating the singular values of each group. Based on that measurement, the weighted Schatten p-norm minimization (WSNM) has been found to be the closest solution to the real singular values of each group. Thus, WSNMcan be equivalently transformed into a non-convex l(p)-norm minimization problem in group-based sparse coding. Experimental results on two applications: image inpainting and image compressive sensing (CS) recovery show that the proposed scheme outperforms many state-of-the-art methods.

Portable and low-cost optical coherence tomography (OCT) is increasingly used to improve the accuracy of point-of-care applications. The increasing research efforts to use photonics integrated circuits (PIC) is without doubts the future for highest packaging densities in miniature optical systems. MR-OCT is another technology that is using the advantages of well known CD,DVD-ROM technology to build miniaturized and low-cost OCT systems and may be more readily available before PICs reach their full potential. For MR-OCT it is essential to separate the the multiple signals originating from the multiple reflections of the partial mirror in the reference arm of Michelson interferometer. An image analysis on MR-OCT scans is performed for filter types such as a Chebychev2 and an elliptic filter, but also an FFT filter with Gaussian window is discussed. The SNR is compared on a variety of filter parameters and the quality of the point spread function along the scan depth.

High spatial and temporal resolution data is vital for crop monitoring and phenology change detection. Due to the lack of satellite architecture and frequent cloud cover issues, availability of daily high spatial data is still far from reality. Remote sensing time series generation of high spatial and temporal data by data fusion seems to be a practical alternative. However, it is not an easy process, since it involves multiple steps and also requires multiple tools. In this paper, a framework of Geo Information System (GIS) based tool is presented for semi-autonomous time series generation. This tool will eliminate the difficulties by automating all the steps and enable the users to generate synthetic time series data with ease. Firstly, all the steps required for the time series generation process are identified and grouped into blocks based on their functionalities. Later two main frameworks are created, one to perform all the pre-processing steps on various satellite data and the other one to perform data fusion to generate time series. The two frameworks can be used individually to perform specific tasks or they could be combined to perform both the processes in one go. This tool can handle most of the known geo data formats currently available which makes it a generic tool for time series generation of various remote sensing satellite data. This tool is developed as a common platform with good interface which provides lot of functionalities to enable further development of more remote sensing applications. A detailed description on the capabilities and the advantages of the frameworks are given in this paper.

Networks-on-chip (NoCs) have become a new chip design paradigm as the size of transistors continues to shrink. Globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) on-chip networks are proposed for solving issues such as large clock tree distribution and signal delay variations. More interestingly, for the GALS networks using m-of-n delay-insensitive interconnect, the asynchronous interconnect not only can be used for on-chip interconnection, but also provides a simple, direct and power-saving solution for off-chip interconnection. This paper presents an asynchronous interface FIFO design to improve throughput over asynchronous inter-chip links using 2-of-7 Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ) encoding in an existing many-core system. The proposed design is suitable for implementation on commodity FPGAs without using the limited global clock buffer resources, but involves using the FPGA to implement asynchronous circuits. The interface FIFO is constructed from the transition detectors themselves rather than by employing a separate buffer in the more conventional fashion. The proposed solution has been demonstrated in an existing system and is suitable for adaptation to other asynchronous m-of-n NRZ coding protocols for high-throughput communication.

The three-dimensional high-resolution imaging sonar uses multi-beam technology combined with synthetic aperture technology to achieve centimeter-level imaging of small underwater targets. It has a good imaging effect on underwater anchoring, sinking mine and buried mine target detection and underwater topography, and has a wide range of military and civil engineering applications. The system has a large amount of data transmission and computation, including multiple functional modules such as synthetic aperture, high resolution array processing, image processing, and target recognition. The software architecture is complex and real-time system development faces serious challenges. The blade servers have been widely used in the telecommunications, financial and other big data processing fields as for the high efficiency, stability and autonomy. This paper introduces a cluster 3D imaging signal processing system based on x240m5 blade server. The message queue communication (ZMQ) is used to realize the stable transmission of large data volume. At the same time, the mixed programming technology of C language and Matlab language combines the convenience of real-time and software integration, which greatly shortens the development cycle. The system runs stably and realizes the imaging recognition of the small spheres and their clump weights in the simulated target water.

In many settings, multiple Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans are performed with different contrast characteristics at a single patient visit. Unfortunately, MRI data-acquisition is inherently slow creating a persistent need to accelerate scans. Multi-contrast reconstruction deals with the joint reconstruction of different contrasts simultaneously. Previous approaches suggest solving a regularized optimization problem using group sparsity and/or color total variation, using composite-splitting denoising and FISTA. Yet, there is significant room for improvement in existing methods regarding computation time, ease of parameter selection, and robustness in reconstructed image quality. Selection of sparsifying transformations is critical in applications of compressed sensing. Here we propose using non-convex p-norm group sparsity (with p < 1), and apply color total variation (CTV). Our method is readily applicable to magnitude images rather than each of the real and imaginary parts separately. We use the constrained form of the problem, which allows an easier choice of data-fidelity error-bound (based on noise power determined from a noise-only scan without any RF excitation). We solve the problem using an adaptation of Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), which provides faster convergence in terms of CPU-time. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the method on two MR image sets (numerical brain phantom images and SRI24 atlas data) in terms of CPU-time and image quality. We show that a non-convex group sparsity function that uses the p-norm instead of the convex counterpart accelerates convergence and improves the peak-signal-to-Noise-Ratio (pSNR), especially for highly undersampled data.

The recent success of deep learning has lead to growing interest in applying these methods to signal processing problems. This paper explores the applications of deep learning to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image formation. We review deep learning from a perspective relevant to SAR image formation. Our objective is to address SAR image formation in the presence of uncertainties in the SAR forward model. We present a recurrent auto-encoder network architecture based on the iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (ISTA) that incorporates SAR modeling. We then present an off-line training method using stochastic gradient descent and discuss the challenges and key steps of learning. Lastly, we show experimentally that our method can be used to form focused images in the presence of phase uncertainties. We demonstrate that the resulting algorithm has faster convergence and decreased reconstruction error than that of ISTA.

We present a comparison study of two x-ray systems for mammography imaging. One is a SELENIA clinical system and the second is a TIMEPIx based system. The aim of the study is to determine the capability of a TIMEPIx detector for mammography applications. We first compare signal to noise ratio (SNR) of x-ray images of Al2O3 spheres with diameters of 0.16mm, 0.24mm and 0.32mm, of a commercial mammography accreditation phantom CIRS015, obtained with each system. Then, we make a similar comparison for a second phantom built with Hydroxyapatite crystals with different morphology and sizes ranging between 0.15mm and 0.83mm, which are embedded within the same block of PMMA of the CIRS015 phantom. Our study allows us to determine the minimum size of Al2O3 spheres on the order of 240 mu m, with 33% lower SNR for the TIMEPIx system as compared to the SELENIA system. When comparing the images of Hydroxyapatite crystals from both systems, the minimum size observed is about 300m, with 23% lower SNR for TIMEPIx.

In the frame of the Copernicus programme, ESA has developed and launched the Sentinel-2 optical imaging mission that delivers optical data products designed to feed downstream services mainly related to land monitoring, emergency management and security. The Sentinel-2 mission is the constellation of two polar orbiting satellites Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B, each one equipped with an optical imaging sensor MSI (Multi-Spectral Instrument). Sentinel-2A was launched on June 23rd, 2015 and Sentinel-2B followed on March 7th, 2017. With the beginning of the operational phase the constellation of both satellites enable image acquisition over the same area every 5 days or less. To use unique potential of the Sentinel-2 data for land applications and ensure the highest quality of scientific exploitation, accurate correction of satellite images for atmospheric effects is required. Therefore the atmospheric correction processor Sen2Cor was developed by Telespazio VEGA Deutschland GmbH on behalf of ESA. Sen2Cor is a Level-2A processor which main purpose is to correct single-date Sentinel-2 Level-1C Top-Of-Atmosphere (TOA) products from the effects of the atmosphere in order to deliver a Level-2A Bottom-Of-Atmosphere (BOA) reflectance product. Additional outputs are an Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) map, a Water Vapour (WV) map and a Scene Classification (SCL) map with Quality Indicators for cloud and snow probabilities. Telespazio France and DLR have teamed up in order to provide the calibration and validation of the Sen2Cor processor. Here we provide an overview over the Sentinel-2 data, processor and products. It presents some processing examples of Sen2Cor applied to Sentinel-2 data, provides up-to-date information about the Sen2Cor release status and recent validation results at the time of the SPIE Remote Sensing 2017.

Nowadays digital cameras are essential parts of various technological processes and daily tasks. They are widely used in optics and photonics, astronomy, biology and other various fields of science and technology such as control systems and video-surveillance monitoring. One of the main information limitations of photo-and videocameras are noises of photosensor pixels. Camera's photosensor noise can be divided into random and pattern components. Temporal noise includes random noise component while spatial noise includes pattern noise component. Temporal noise can be divided into signal-dependent shot noise and signal-nondependent dark temporal noise. For measurement of camera noise characteristics, the most widely used methods are standards (for example, EMVA Standard 1288). It allows precise shot and dark temporal noise measurement but difficult in implementation and time-consuming. Earlier we proposed method for measurement of temporal noise of photo-and videocameras. It is based on the automatic segmentation of nonuniform targets (ASNT). Only two frames are sufficient for noise measurement with the modified method. In this paper, we registered frames and estimated shot and dark temporal noises of cameras consistently in the real-time. The modified ASNT method is used. Estimation was performed for the cameras: consumer photocamera Canon EOS 400D (CMOS, 10.1 MP, 12 bit ADC), scientific camera MegaPlus II ES11000 (CCD, 10.7 MP, 12 bit ADC), industrial camera PixeLink PL-B781F (CMOS, 6.6 MP, 10 bit ADC) and video-surveillance camera Watec LCL-902C (CCD, 0.47 MP, external 8 bit ADC). Experimental dependencies of temporal noise on signal value are in good agreement with fitted curves based on a Poisson distribution excluding areas near saturation. Time of registering and processing of frames used for temporal noise estimation was measured.
