Contrast change is a special type of image distortion which is vitally important for visual perception of image quality, while little investigates has been dedicated to the contrast-distorted images. A proper contrast change not only reduces human visual perception, instead of improving it. This characteristic determines that full-reference way cannot assess contrast-distorted images properly. In this paper, we propose a no-reference way for contrast-distorted image assessment. Five statistical features are extracted from the distortion image, and two features are extracted from the phase congruence (PC) map of distortion image. These features and human mean opinion scores (MOS) of training images are jointly utilized to train a model of support vector regression (SVR). The quality of testing image is evaluated by this learned model. Experiments on CCID2014 database demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed metric.

Grabcut, an iterative algorithm based on Graph Cut, is a popular foreground segmentation method. However, it suffers from a main drawback: a manual interaction is required in order to start segmenting the image. In this paper, four different methods based on image pairs are used to obtain an initial extraction of the foreground. Then, the obtained initial estimation of the foreground is used as input to the GrabCut algorithm, thus avoiding the need of interaction. Moreover, this paper is focused on passport images, which require an almost pixel-perfect segmentation in order to be a valid photo. Having gathered our own dataset and generated ground truth images, promising results are obtained in terms of F1-scores, with a maximum mean of 0.975 among all the images, improving the performance of GrabCut in all cases. Some future work directions are given for those unsolved issues that were faced, such as the segmentation in hair regions or tests in a non-uniform background scenario.

High-Dynamic Rang and high spatial resolutions image, such as 16bits x-ray image, is required in security and medical applications. However, transporting this kind of the image costs a lot in network bandwidth, storage capacity and transmission time. To solve the problem, efficient compression technology is raised. In this paper, we propose a nearly lossless compression algorithm with background segmentation for 16 bits x-ray image. Background and foreground of image are separated with a threshold calculated through detecting background peak of image gray histogram. Background pixels connected to image border are segmented as background by two pass run-length labeling. Then image background is compressed with Run-Length-encoding (RLE) and the foreground is encoded via Lempel-Ziv-77 (LZ77). To validate the proposed algorithm, we compare it with state-of-art compression algorithms LZ77, JPGE_LS, and arithmetic coding. Experimental results show that our algorithm obtains good performance both on compress ratio and speed with neglectable information loss.

In this paper, we propose a mutual framework that combines two state-of-the-art visual object tracking algorithms. Both trackers benefit from each other's advantage leading to an efficient visual tracking approach. Many state-of-the-art trackers have poor performance due to rain, fog or occlusion in real-world scenarios. Often, after several frames, objects are getting lost, only leading to a short-term tracking capability. In this paper, we focus on long-term tracking, preserving real-time capability and very accurate positioning of tracked objects. The proposed framework is capable to track arbitrary objects, leading to decreased labeling efforts and an improved positioning of bounding boxes. This is especially interesting for applications such as semi-automatic labeling. The benefit of our proposed framework is demonstrated by comparing it with the related algorithms using own sequences as well as a well-known and publicly available dataset.

This paper describes the processing methods of signal obtained from the CMOS matrix sensor in terms of its implementation for the in-line automatic particles counters. The methods involve an analysis of particles' tracks in terms of its shapes and charge accumulated by each pixel. This combination gives an opportunity to determine an equivalent diameter of particles and their shapes. These methods can be implemented using digital signal processors, which is very important in the area of developing and producing the built into hydraulic systems sensors. The primary application of developed methods is the diagnostic of the state of hydraulic systems in different areas.

Face spoofing detection nowadays has attracted attentions regarding the biometrics authentication issue. Inspired by the observation that face spoofing detection is highly relevant with the inherent image quality which also strongly depends on the properties of the capturing devices and conditions, in this paper, we tackle the spoofing detection problem based on a two-stage learning approach. Firstly, we manually cluster the training samples based on the prior knowledge of face sample quality (e.g. camera model), and multiple quality-guided classifiers are trained based on each cluster with extracted image quality assessment (IQA) feature. Subsequently, a regression function is learned by mapping from the IQA scores to the corresponding classifier's parameters, which can be further used for classification. As such, given a new face input for verification, we can predict its classifier's coefficients based on the pre-learned regression model, with which spoofing detection can be effectively achieved. Experimental results show that we achieve significantly better classification performance compared with the strategy that directly applies the IQA features with single classifier.

Corona discharges occur in high voltage electrical equipment in case of defects and damage, while ultraviolet(UV) light generated during discharge. High resolution imaging in the solar-blind UV bands has a lot of applications in corona discharge detection. A ultraviolet imager based on 320x256 solar-blind AlGaN focal plane arrays (FPA) was designed that work even in the sunlight, because the Cut-off wavelength of the AlGaN FPA is 280nm. The UV image signal processing system based on FPGA is composed of various function modules include the voltage bias, sequence drive, A/D data acquisition, non-uniformity correction, video transformation. Due to FPGA-based data acquisition and real-time image processing technology, the UV imager can operate at a rate up to 100 frame/s. The results show that the simulation high voltage ultraviolet image can be obtained by the UV imager. The image non-uniformity correction performed is one-points correction method to realize background subtraction. And the images show good uniformity and contrast. The UV image of the alcohol burner flame can be detected by the Ultraviolet imager. Imaging quality was discussed which can be determined by signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the integration time, the optics f/number and so on. The best imaging conditions were analyzed and the imaging system was designed and setup. The conclusion is proved that the ultraviolet imager based on solar-blind AlGaN FPA provides a new method for corona discharge detection of high voltage power transmission and distribution system.

Retinal pathologies that are detected too late and/or left untreated can seriously damage eyesight. It is important to monitor the retina and react to any pathological changes. A fast, accurate, non-invasive, and even three-dimensional retina examination is the optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this paper we propose a new automated classification method for evaluation of vitreomacular interface (VRI) in human eyes. We present an approach for modelling changes in retina structure during the progression of vitreomacular traction (VMT) pathology. Presented experiments were performed on volumetric data acquired from adult patients with the use of Avanti RTvue device. Advanced digital image processing algorithms were subsequently applied to each OCT cross-section (B-scan) for image denoising and flattening, as well as retina layers segmentation. The proposed solution has a good accuracy and almost all subjects were successfully classified into one of 4 groups corresponding to various stages of VMT. The developed models of VMT stages show a high potential of the proposed method to support ophthalmologists in making appropriate clinical decisions.

Automatically recognizing pain from spontaneous facial expression is of increased attention, since it can provide for a direct and relatively objective indication to pain experience. Until now, most of the existing works have focused on analyzing pain from individual images or video-frames, hence discarding the spatio-temporal information that can be useful in the continuous assessment of pain. In this context, this paper investigates and quantifies for the first time the role of the spatio-temporal information in pain assessment by comparing the performance of several baseline local descriptors used in their traditional spatial form against their spatio-temporal counterparts that take into account the video dynamics. For this purpose, we perform extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets. Our results indicate that using spatio-temporal information to classify video-sequences consistently shows superior performance when compared against the one obtained using only static information.

The Walsh-Hadamard transform plays a major role in many image and video coding algorithms. In one hand, its intensive use in these algorithms makes its acceleration a challenge, in order to speed-up the algorithm execution. On the other hand, the available fast implementations are not efficient across different platforms. In this work, a parallel -based implementation of the WHT is proposed for CPU and GPU platforms using the OpenCL standard. OpenCL achieves portability at code level, but its performance suffers when the same code is used for CPUs and GPUs. To achieve top performance, we propose two WHT versions: OpenCL-GPU for GPUs and OpenCL-CPU for CPUs. Broadly, OpenCL-GPU executed on a GPU runs faster than OpenCL-CPU executed on a multicore CPU, with speedups that range from 120.87 to 101635. However, OpenCL-GPU performance drops substantially when ran on a multicore CPU machine, where OpenCL-CPU achieves higher performance, as it exploits the OpenCL support for SIMD instructions.
