image filtering is a process of reducing noise which degrades the performance of image processing. In some applications such as segmentation or classification, denoising has been designed to smooth the homogeneous areas while keeping and enhancing the edges. In several applications such as video analysis, image-guided surgical interventions or visual servoing, real-time denoising is needed. The devoted filter was suggested to adjust the filter of anisotropic diffusion to the features of the multiplicative noise existing within the ultrasound video and also to make easier the filtering process. The purpose of this study is to decrease the processing time implementation of the diffusion function using parallel processors through the optimization of the Graphics processor unit (GPU). The results show that the suggested method is very effictive in terms of real-time compared to a standard central processing unit (CPU) implementation. Our proposed model magnifies the acceleration of the image filtering to 7x compared to the sequential calculation.

Recently, computer-aided celiac disease diagnosis has been promoted to provide an objective opinion besides histological examination of biopsies and visual assessment of macroscopic mucosal tissue. State-of-the-art techniques, however, are not accurate enough to provide incentive for clinical deployment. In this work, we answer two questions: Do computers and human experts make similar classification errors and can expert knowledge be utilized to increase the accuracy of computer-aided methods. Three experts were asked to perform visual classification of a large number of images. The experts decisions were combined with nine different state-of-the-art image representations. Experimentation showed that the correlations between two computer-based methods were higher than the correlations between an expert and a computer-based method. Furthermore, the inclusion of expert knowledge led to statistically significant (p < 0.05) improvements in 69 out of 108 investigated settings.

Multi-beam scanning electron microscopy (MBSEM), has been developed to reduce the acquisition time by scanning multiple pixels simultaneously. The signal from the 14 x 14 beams is captured on a camera which reads out the position and intensity for each beam on the sample. But as we work with multiple beams and pixels we need a powerful technique for image acquisition and image processing algorithms. We use Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA's), often used as an implementation platform for real time image acquisition and processing applications, because their structure is able to exploit spatial and temporal parallelism. This paper presents a technique for dealing with the various constraints of the camera and efficient mapping for image acquisition and processing operations on FPGA.

Hepatic steatosis is a defining feature of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, emerging with the increasing incidence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The research in image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis mostly focuses on the quantification of fat in biopsy images. This work furthers the image-based analysis of hepatic steatosis by exploring the spatial characteristics of fat globules in whole slide biopsy images after performing fat detection. An algorithm based on morphological filtering and sparse linear models is presented for fat detection. Then the spatial properties of detected fat globules in relation to the hepatic anatomical structures of central veins and portal tracts are explored. The test dataset consists of 38 high resolution images from 21 patients. The experimental results provide an insight into the size distributions of fat globules and their location with respect to the anatomical structures.

Within the multi-resolution analysis, the study of the image compression algorithm using the Haar wavelet has been performed. We have studied the dependence of the image quality on the compression ratio. Also, the variation of the compression level of the studied image has been obtained. It is shown that the compression ratio in the range of 8-10 is optimal for environmental monitoring. Under these conditions the compression level is in the range of 1.7 - 4.2, depending on the type of images. It is shown that the algorithm used is more convenient and has more advantages than Winrar. The Haar wavelet algorithm has improved the method of signal and image processing.

In this paper an FPGA-based video HiL (Hardwarein-the-Loop) solution is presented. It was designed to evaluate an of-the-shelf ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) smart camera consisting of a video sensor (so-called forward looking camera (FLC)) and video processing unit. It allows to directly capture and store on a PC the video stream from the sensor. Then, the pre-recorded sequences can be directly injected into the video processing unit. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate the vision system in the laboratory under conditions almost identical to those present during real test drives. Moreover, all experiments are fully repeatable. The proposed system supports video streams with resolution 1280x960 @ 30 fps in the RCCC (Red/Clear) 1 colour system. It is used in research and development projects in Delphi Technical Center Krakow.

Modern image processing performed on-board low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) platforms, must provide high-performance while simultaneously reducing memory footprint, power consumption, and computational complexity. image preprocessing, along with downstream image exploitation algorithms such as object detection and recognition, and georegistration, place a heavy burden on power and processing resources. image preprocessing often includes image denoising to improve data quality for downstream exploitation algorithms. High-performance image denoising is typically performed in the wavelet domain, where noise generally spreads and the wavelet transform compactly captures high information-bearing image characteristics. In this paper, we improve modeling fidelity of a previously-developed, computationally-efficient wavelet-based denoising algorithm. The modeling improvements enhance denoising performance without significantly increasing computational cost, thus making the approach suitable for low-SWAP platforms. Specifically, this paper presents modeling improvements to the Sendur-Selesnick model (SSM) which implements a bivariate wavelet shrinkage denoising algorithm that exploits interscale dependency between wavelet coefficients. We formulate optimization problems for parameters controlling deadzone size which leads to improved denoising performance. Two formulations are provided;one with a simple, closed form solution which we use for numerical result generation, and the second as an integral equation formulation involving elliptic integrals. We generate image denoising performance results over different image sets drawn from public domain imagery, and investigate the effect of wavelet filter tap length on denoising performance. We demonstrate denoising performance improvement when using the enhanced modeling over performance obtained with the baseline SSM model.

image segmentation plays an important role in digitized crime scene forensics. Particularly in context of modern high resolution contact-less and non-destructive acquisition and analysis of handwriting impression traces by means of 3D sensors, one main challenge is the separation of writing trace areas and non-traces by image segmentation. In earlier work authors have presented the general, yet qualitative feasibility to do so by an initial processing pipeline based on data acquisition, pre-processing and a global segmentation approach. However, quantitative measurements with regards to the segmentation quality have not been studied yet, as well as the discussion of alternative strategies for 3D image segmentation in this scenario. In this paper, we extent the earlier work by introducing a concept for benchmarking segmentation accuracy for 3D handwriting traces. Further we present results with regards to the initial approach as well as a new, adaptive local threshold segmentation. The benchmarking is based on ground truth data, determined using data of handwriting traces acquired by a high-quality flatbed scanner and segmentation information retrieved from those by means of an Otsu operator. This ground truth allows for calculation of true positive, true negative, false positive and false negative error rates as quality measurement. The practical impact of the suggested benchmarking is shown by comparison of experimental results based on initial segmentation approach and new adaptive approach. Experiments are based on ten handwriting traces each of eleven persons. The comparison of results indicates that the best parameter set of the adaptive thresholding leads to an quality increase of 1 2 : 1 % in terms of precision for writing trace and decrease of 1 : 4 % in terms of precission for background.

Computer aided diagnostic and segmentation tools have become increasingly important in reducing the workload of medical experts performing diagnosis, monitoring and documentation of various eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR) and glaucoma. Supervised methods have been developed for the segmentation and detection of lesions, and the reported performance has been good. The supervised methods, however, need representative data to properly train the classifier. Inaccuracies in the ground truth may have a significant impact on the performance of a supervised method as the training data are not representative. In this study, a quantitative evaluation of the sensitivity of different image features, including colour, texture, edge and higher-level features, to inaccuracy in the ground truth on exudates is presented. A mean decrease of approx. 20% in sensitivity and 13% in specificity was observed when using the most inaccurate training data.

In this paper, we propose to compare different methods for tumor segmentation in positron emission tomography (PET) images. We first propose to tackle this problem under the umbrella of shape optimization and 3D deformable models. Indeed, 2D active contours have been widely investigated in the literature but these techniques do not take advantage of 3D informations. On the one hand, we use the well-known model of Chan and Vese. On the other hand we use a criterion based on parametric probabilities which allows us to test the assumption of Poisson distribution of the intensity in such images. Both will be compared to their 2D equivalent and to an improved random-walker algorithm. For this comparison, we use a set of simulated, phantom and real sequences with a known ground-truth and compute the corresponding Dice Coefficients. We also give some examples of 2D and 3D segmentation results.
