Omnidirectional image and video, also known as 360 image and 360 video, are gaining in popularity with the recent growth in availability of cameras and displays that can cope with such type of content. As omnidirectional visual content represents a larger set of information about the scene, it typically requires a much larger volume of information. Efficient compression of such content is therefore important. In this paper, we review the state of the art in compression of omnidirectional visual content, and propose a novel approach to encode omnidirectional images in such a way that they are still viewable on legacy JPEG decoders.

This work presents an intelligent analog image sensor system for smart camera applications with the need of edge or marker detection. The system consists of a 3x3 read-out CMOS image sensor, an analog Sobel stage and additional circuitry like operational amplifiers and comparators to compute a 1bit image with the edges present in the taken photo. This information can then be further processed digitally to detect specific shapes in order to control robot routines, for example. The architecture of the proposed system is highly desirable as dedicated analog hardware has significant advantages in terms of power and speed compared to digital implementations. The overall system is simulated with the help of a 3x3 CMOS image sensor IC as well as Cadence Virtuoso for analog circuit simulation and MATLAB to convert the sequential information back to an image, and compared to other state of the art CMOS image sensors with edge detection capability. The analog Sobel circuit runs with a clock of 10 MHz and consumes less than 0.79 mW average power for the computation of the example image, and the whole 200x200 pixel image sensor consumes only 5.5 mW at a frame rate of 75 fps.

The use of multisensors images for different applications, like change detection and image fusion, require an image to image registration. Actually, the image registration becomes a crucial task with the continuous increase in image resolution, especially in urban area. In this paper, a refined automatic Mutual Information based registration approach of spaceborne Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) and optical image is proposed. The data set include TerraSar-x (1m) and Worldview-2 (0.5m) images and cover urban area of San Francisco. Our approach is divided into two steps. First, we use Discrete Canny edge detector to extract contours from the optical image, and Gabor-Wavelet filter to extract edge from the SAR image. Second, a rigid transformation (rotation and translation) is applied to the contours image obtained by Canny detector. Then, for each value of transformation, the Mutual Information is computed between this transformed image and the feature image outcome of application of Gabor-wavelet to the SAR image. The best transformation parameters are obtained when the Mutual Information is maximal. Also, in this work, we compared the proposed approach with the basic Mutual Information intensity based registration method. The results obtained demonstrated that our approach improve the registration accuracy comparatively to the basic Mutual Information intensity based registration method.

image processing can be considered as signal processing in two dimensions (2D). Filtering is one of the basic image processing operation. Filtering in frequency domain is computationally faster when compared to the corresponding spatial domain operation as the complex convolution process is modified as multiplication in frequency domain. The popular 2D transforms used in image processing are Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The common values for resolution of an image are 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024. As it can be seen, the image formats are generally not a power of 2. So power of 2 FFT lengths are not required and these cannot be built using shorter Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) blocks. Split radix based FFT algorithms like Good-Thomas FFT algorithm simplifies the implementation logic required for such applications and hence can be implemented in low area and power consumption and also meet the timing constraints thereby operating at high frequency. The Good-Thomas FFT algorithm which is a Prime Factor FFT algorithm (PFA) provides the means of computing DFT with least number of multiplication and addition operations. We will be providing an Altera FPGA based NIOS II custom instruction implementation of Good-Thomas FFT algorithm to improve the system performance and also provide the comparison when the same algorithm is completely implemented in software.

Recently, short animated image sequences have become very popular in social networks. Most animated images are represented in GIF format. In this paper we propose an animated JPEG format, called aJPEG, which allows the standard JPEG format to be extended in a backward compatible way in order to cope with animated images. After presenting the proposed format, we illustrate it using two prototype applications: the first in form of a GIF-to-aJPEG converter on a personal computer and the second in form of an aJPEG viewer on a smart phone. The paper also reports the performance evaluation of aJPEG when compared to GIF. Experimental results show that aJPEG outperforms animated GIF in both file size overhead and image quality.

The age of computational imaging is merging the physical hardware-driven approach of photonics with advanced signal processing methods from software-driven computer engineering and applied mathematics. The compressed sensing theory in particular established a practical framework for reconstructing the scene content using few linear combinations of complex measurements and a sparse prior for regularizing the solution. Compressed sensing found direct applications in digital holography for microscopy. Indeed, the wave propagation phenomenon in free space mixes in a natural way the spatial distribution of point sources from the 3-dimensional scene. As the 3-dimensional scene is mapped to a 2-dimensional hologram, the hologram samples form a compressed representation of the scene as well. This overview paper discusses contributions in the field of compressed digital holography at the micro scale. Then, an outreach on future extensions towards the real-size macro scale is discussed. Thanks to advances in sensor technologies, increasing computing power and the recent improvements in sparse digital signal processing, holographic modalities are on the verge of practical high-quality visualization at a macroscopic scale where much higher resolution holograms must be acquired and processed on the computer.

With the new planned Sentinel missions, the availability of Earth Observation data is increasing everyday offering a larger number of applications that can be created using these data. Currently, three of the five missions were launched and they are delivering a wealth of data and imagery of the Earth's surface as, for example, the Sentinel-1 carries an advanced radar instrument to provide an all-weather, day-and-night supply of Earth imagery. The second mission, the Sentinel-2, carries an optical instrument payload that will sample 13 spectral bands at different resolutions. Even though, we count on tools for automated loading and visual exploration of the Sentinel data, we still face the problem of extracting relevant structures from the images, finding similar patterns in a scene, exploiting the data, and creating final user applications based on these processed data. In this paper, we present our approach for processing radar and multi-spectral Sentinel data. Our approach is mainly composed of three steps: 1) the generation of a data model that explains the information contained in a Sentinel product. The model is formed by primitive descriptors and metadata entries, 2) the storage of this model in a database system, 3) the semantic definition of the image content based on machine learning algorithms and relevance feedback methods.

In this paper, the effect of the image resolution for gender detection and age classification have been analyzed by conducting experiments with facial images that have 10 different image resolutions ranging from 2 x 1 to 329 x 264. K Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forests (RF) classifiers, which have been successfully used in several applications, have been employed to extract gender and age information from the images. Experiments for age classification and gender detection have been performed separately.

Plenoptic content is becoming increasingly popular thanks to the availability of acquisition and display devices. Thanks to image-based rendering techniques, a plenoptic content can be rendered in real time in an interactive manner allowing virtual navigation through the captured scenes. This way of content consumption enables new experiences, and therefore introduces several challenges in terms of plenoptic data processing, transmission and consequently visual quality evaluation. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to subjectively assess the visual quality of plenoptic content. We also introduce a prototype software to perform subjective quality assessment according to the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is further applied to assess the visual quality of a light field compression algorithm. Results show that this methodology can be successfully used to assess the visual quality of plenoptic content.

In this paper, a graph-based technique originally intended for image processing has been tailored for the segmentation of airborne LiDAR points, that are irregularly distributed. Every LiDAR point is labeled as a node and interconnected as a graph extended to its neighborhood and defined in a 4D feature space (x, y, z, and the reflection intensity). The interconnections between pairs of neighboring nodes are weighted based on the distance in the feature space. The segmentation consists in an iterative process of classification of nodes into homogeneous groups based on their similarity. This approach is intended to be part of a complete system for classification of structures from LiDAR point clouds in applications needing fast response times. In this sense, a study of the performance/accuracy trade-off has been performed, extracting some conclusions about the benefits of the proposed solution.
