Single-pixel imaging based on multiplexing is a promising technique, especially in applications where 2D detectors or raster scanning imaging are not readily applicable. With this method, Hadamard masks are projected on a spatial light modulator to encode an incident scene and a signal is recorded at the photodiode detector for each of these masks. Ultimately, the image is reconstructed on the computer by applying the inverse transform matrix. Thus, various algorithms were optimized and several spatial light modulators already characterized for such a task. This work analyses the imaging quality of such a single-pixel arrangement, when various illumination conditions are used. More precisely, the main comparison is made between coherent and incoherent ("white light") illumination and between two multiplexing methods, namely Hadamard and Scanning. The quality of the images is assessed by calculating their SNR, using two relations. The results show better images are obtained with "white light" illumination for the first method and coherent one for the second.

Circulating tumor cell (CTC) identification has applications in both early detection and monitoring of solid cancers. The rarity of CTCs, expected at similar to 1-50 CTCs per million nucleated blood cells (WBCs), requires identifying methods based on biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity for accurate identification. Discovery of biomarkers with ever higher sensitivity and specificity to CTCs is always desirable to potentially find more CTCs in cancer patients thus increasing their clinical utility. Here, we investigate quantitative image cytometly measurements of lipids with the biomarker panel of DNA, Cytokeratin (CK), and CD45 commonly used to identify CTCs. We engineered a device for labeling suspended cell samples with fluorescent antibodies and dyes. We used it to prepare samples for 4 channel confocal laser scanning microscopy. The total data acquired at high resolution from one sample is 1.3 GB. We developed software to perform the automated segmentation of these images into regions of interest (ROIs) containing individual cells. We quantified image features of total signal, spatial second moment, spatial frequency second moment, and their product for each ROI. We performed measurements on pure WBCs, cancer cell line MCF7 and mixed samples. Multivariable regressions and feature selection were used to determine combination features that are more sensitive and specific than any individual feature separately. We also demonstrate that computation of spatial characteristics provides higher sensitivity and specificity than intensity alone. Statistical models allowed quantification of the required sensitivity and specificity for detecting small levels of CTCs in a human blood sample.

image filtering is a process of reducing noise which degrades the performance of image processing. In some applications such as segmentation or classification, denoising has been designed to smooth the homogeneous areas while keeping and enhancing the edges. In several applications such as video analysis, image-guided surgical interventions or visual servoing, real-time denoising is needed. The devoted filter was suggested to adjust the filter of anisotropic diffusion to the features of the multiplicative noise existing within the ultrasound video and also to make easier the filtering process. The purpose of this study is to decrease the processing time implementation of the diffusion function using parallel processors through the optimization of the Graphics processor unit (GPU). The results show that the suggested method is very effictive in terms of real-time compared to a standard central processing unit (CPU) implementation. Our proposed model magnifies the acceleration of the image filtering to 7x compared to the sequential calculation.

Among various non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, Magnetic field mapping is one of the most promising in terms of applicability. Depending on the specific structural properties (i.e. conductive or magnetic) of the materials investigated, numerous techniques (such as Magnetic particle inspection-MPI or Magnetic flux leakage-MFL, etc.) which rely on the detection of magnetic field have been developed. In recent years, coils, which are traditional magnetic field detection sensors, have been replaced by solid state Hall Effect sensors. The main motivation under this transformation is the ultraminiature size of the Hall Effect sensors, which enables them to be densely packaged. Furthermore, Hall Effect sensors can also pick-up DC magnetic fields, which make them the suitable transducer for applications like DC MFL. Thanks to advances in semiconductor technology, the dynamic range and sensitivity of the Hall Effect sensors have gradually been enhanced. The newly introduced Quantum Well Hall Effect (QWHE) sensors offer superb dynamic range and sensitivity compared to conventional Si or GaAs Hall Effect transducer technology. In this work, we demonstrate a PC software and digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms developed for a novel hand held QWHE transducer based Magnetic Field Camera. The designed camera consists of a 16x16 QWHE sensor array on a 5mm sensor pitch. The connection between the camera and PC running the software and DSP algorithms is accomplished using a 100BASE-T Ethernet connection. Display update rates (i.e. frames per second - FPS) can go up to 240. The developed software and algorithms allow the visualisation of DC and AC magnetic fields, as well as their spectral content. Furthermore, image processing and enhancement techniques have been deployed for further image and visual quality. © Copyright (2016) by British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing All rights reserved.

For the sake of polarimetric accuracy, polarization imaging systems based on liquid crystal modulators often work at one given wavelength due to the strong chromatic properties of the liquid crystal retarders. This often requires the use of narrowband filters which reduces the amount of light in the system and thus the signal-to-noise ratio. For applications where the main parameter of interest is the target/background discriminability rather than polarimetric accuracy, spectral filtering may not be the best option. In this work, we investigate the impact of broadening the spectrum of the light entering the system on the discriminability performance of passive and active polarimetric systems. Through simulations, we show that broadening the bandwidth of the illumination can increase the contrast between two regions, as the increase of light flux compensates for the loss of polarimetric precision. Moreover, we show that taking into account the chromatic characteristics of the components of the imaging system can further enhance the contrast. We validate these findings through experiments in passive and active configurations, and demonstrate that the illumination bandwidth can be seen as an additional parameter to optimize polarimetric imaging set-ups.

Text-dependent automatic speaker verification naturally calls for the simultaneous verification of speaker identity and spoken content. These two tasks can be achieved with automatic speaker verification (ASV) and utterance verification (UV) technologies. While both have been addressed previously in the literature, a treatment of simultaneous speaker and utterance verification with a modern, standard database is so far lacking. This is despite the burgeoning demand for voice biometrics in a plethora of practical security applications. With the goal of improving overall verification performance, this paper reports different strategies for simultaneous ASV and UV in the context of short-duration, text-dependent speaker verification. Experiments performed on the recently released RedDots corpus are reported for three different ASV systems and four different UV systems. Results show that the combination of utterance verification with automatic speaker verification is (almost) universally beneficial with significant performance improvements being observed.

This textbook for undergraduate mathematics, science, and engineering students introduces the theory and applications of discrete Fourier and wavelet transforms using elementary linear algebra, without assuming prior knowledge of signal processing or advanced analysis. It explains how to use the Fourier matrix to extract frequency information from a digital signal and how to use circulant matrices to emphasize selected frequency ranges. It introduces discrete wavelet transforms for digital signals through the lifting method and illustrates through examples and computer explorations how these transforms are used in signal and image processing. Then the general theory of discrete wavelet transforms is developed via the matrix algebra of two-channel filter banks. Finally, wavelet transforms for analog signals are constructed based on filter bank results already presented, and the mathematical framework of multiresolution analysis is examined.

Ratings from multiple human annotators are often pooled in applications where the ground truth is hidden. Examples include annotating perceived emotions and assessing quality metrics for speech and image. These ratings are not restricted to a single dimension and can be multidimensional. In this paper, we propose an Expectation-Maximization based algorithm to model such ratings. Our model assumes that there exists a latent multidimensional ground truth that can be determined from the observation features and that the ratings provided by the annotators are noisy versions of the ground truth. We test our model on a study conducted on children with autism to predict a four dimensional rating of expressivity, naturalness, pronunciation goodness and engagement. Our goal in this application is to reliably predict the individual annotator ratings which can be used to address issues of cognitive load on the annotators as well as the rating cost. We initially train a baseline directly predicting annotator ratings from the features and compare it to our model under three different settings assuming: (i) each entry in the multidimensional rating is independent of others, (ii) a joint distribution among rating dimensions exists, (iii) a partial set of ratings to predict the remaining entries is available.

The notion of a graph wavelet gives rise to more advanced processing of data on graphs due to its ability to operate in a localized manner, across newly arising data-dependency structures, with respect to the graph signal and underlying graph structure, thereby taking into consideration the inherent geometry of the data. In this work, we tackle the problem of creating graph wavelet filterbanks on circulant graphs for a sparse representation of certain classes of graph signals. The underlying graph can hereby be data-driven as well as fixed, for applications including image processing and social network theory, whereby clusters can be modelled as circulant graphs, respectively. We present a set of novel graph wavelet filterbank constructions, which annihilate higher-order polynomial graph signals (up to a border effect) defined on the vertices of undirected, circulant graphs, and are localised in the vertex domain. We give preliminary results on their performance for non-linear graph signal approximation and denoising. Furthermore, we provide extensions to our previously developed segmentationinspired graph wavelet framework for non-linear image approximation, by incorporating notions of smoothness and vanishing moments, which further improve performance compared to traditional methods.

This study explores wavelength-modulated differential photoacoustic (WM-DPA) imaging for non-invasive early cancer detection via sensitive characterization of functional information such as hemoglobin oxygenation (sO(2)) levels. Well-known benchmarks of tumor formation such as angiogenesis and hypoxia can be addressed this way. While most conventional photoacoustic imaging has almost entirely employed high-power pulsed lasers, frequency-domain photoacoustic radar (FD-PAR) has seen significant development as an alternative technique. It employs a continuous wave laser source intensity-modulated and driven by frequency-swept waveforms. WM-DPA imaging utilizes chirp modulated laser beams at two distinct wavelengths for which absorption differences between oxy- and deoxygenated hemoglobin are minimum (isosbestic point, 805 nm) and maximum (680 nm) to simultaneously generate two signals detected using a standard commercial array transducer as well as a single-element transducer that scans the sample. signal processing is performed using Lab View and Matlab software developed in-house. Minute changes in total hemoglobin concentration (tHb) and oxygenation levels are detectable using this method since background absorption is suppressed due to the out-of-phase modulation of the laser sources while the difference between the two signals is amplified, thus allowing pre-malignant tumors to become identifiable. By regulating the signal amplitude ratio and phase shift the system can be tuned to applications like cancer screening, 502 quantification and hypoxia monitoring in stroke patients. Experimental results presented demonstrate WM-DPA imaging of sheep blood phantoms in comparison to single-wavelength FD-PAR imaging. Future work includes the functional PA imaging of small animals in vivo.
