Precision registration (alignment) of images is utilized in dim target detection, temporal change detection, and other surveillance applications. The Cramer-Rao bound on the accuracy of parameter estimation governs the fundamental limit on the accuracy of image registration. This presentation derives the Cramer-Rao bound on registration accuracy, with emphasis on how registration accuracy depends on sensor noise, scene geometry, image characteristics and the number of pixels used in the registration process, and compares the Cramer-Rao bound prediction to registration results from the SAIC IR processing code, STAS, for both synthetically generated scenes and real IR data.

A novel automatic left ventricular (LV) volume measurement system from apical long axis 2D echocardiographic images is introduced. The approach is based on the radial search algorithm in which the LV center point position is automatically estimated in a fuzzy based framework. A new nonuniform data sampling idea for intensity sampling of the image in the LV cavity region is used to increase the accuracy of the LV endocardium extraction in the apex and valve regions with an almost twice longer distance from the center point in comparison to the closest lateral regions. A wavelet based multiresolution edge detection technique is employed to analyze the echo images.

There are numerous types of real-time imageprocessingapplications with diverse requirements. Even though application requirements vary significantly, they share many common elements. An integrated imageprocessing software architecture applicable to multiple imageprocessingapplications is beneficial in reducing software costs, increasing information fusion, and rapidly prototyping demonstration systems. This paper describes an imageprocessing architecture that provides a framework for integrating multiple imageprocessingapplications such as image-based target trackers, infrared search and track (IRST), and automatic target cueing/recognition (ATC/ATR). It discusses the general imageprocessing structure describing common and unique elements of these different applications including such issues as throughput, control and data flow, and latency requirements. We describe the integrated architecture including data input, processing parallelization, image and data processing, information fusing, interfaces, and displays. We present examples of image-based target tracking, moving target indication and IRST implemented using this software architecture on parallel processors. The integrated imageprocessing framework has proven to be extremely beneficial for rapid development of imageprocessing systems from the concept to the demonstration stage.

Electronic still images and video can be distributed quickly and economically by means of ISDN and broadband networks. However, the widespread adoption of electronic distribution of copyrighted digital images is impeded by the ease of illicit copying and dissemination. A solution to this problem is to embed an indelible watermark in the image. The watermark can be used to identify both the source of the image and the intended recipient. This paper presents a watermarking scheme which is based on digital communication techniques. The ability of the watermark to withstand lossy compression, image coding, filtering and other imageprocessing operations, is assessed by computer simulations.

The content-based QBIC information retrieval system is investigated regarding its application in rock core and textile images clustering. It is demonstrated that content-based techniques, and texture in particular, can be used to cluster images, giving a reasonable correlation with assignments made by visual inspection. Options for improving clustering accuracy include: synthesis of purer examples;outlining regions within the image;appropriate weighting of the components of the texture feature vector;and experimenting with alternative classifiers, particularly where texture is important.

A scalable parallel implementation of the discrete wavelet transform based on the pipeline processor farm methodology is described. Even for small-scale applications with a relatively small number of processors, the parallel implementation outperforms a single processor in execution speed. In addition, the efficiency of the proposed architecture tends to improve as the data size and filter length increase and the communication-to-computation ratio decreases, suggesting that parallel implementations of the discrete wavelet transform could be attractive in data-intensive applications like computer vision and image coding.
