The detected signal and noise contributions were measured and related to the radiation exposure and tube current (mA) tube setting. Furthermore, the detector contrast has been experimentally determined. The experimental results indicate that Cd1-xZnxTe detectors have high detector contrast resolution. Therefore, they appear to be very attractive for x-ray digital imaging applications.

A method is described for estimating the reflection components of glossy objects when the color signal is a mixture of body reflection, interface reflection, and interreflections. The objects are dielectric materials. We first model interreflection between two surfaces. Next, an algorithm is described for estimating the reflection components from a single color image. This estimation is performed in three steps of estimating illumination, object colors, and body interreflection. A chromaticity plane is introduced for analyzing the interreflection effects. We propose an algorithm for separating the measured image into the reflection components. The feasibility of the method is shown in experiments.

The electronic content of the automobile is growing every year. American business analysts estimate that the electrical/electronic content of the average vehicle will be $2000Nehicle by the year 2000. This represents an electrical component industry of $68 Billion/year (using 1995 total world vehicle sales figure). As the demand for increased functionality grows, the complexity of vehicle design increases. At the same time, the need to reduce vehicle costs and the need to maintain high standards ofquality and reliability are forever present. Automobile manufactures have the need to minimise the time taken between the decision to build a particular model and the arrival ofthe first production vehicle (or Job #1). Jaguar's xK8 took 30 months from Project Approval to Job #1. The xK8 included many systems which had been deployed by Jaguar for the first time. Such as the all new V8 powerplant, drive by wire, serial communications and active ride control. Maintaining high levels of quality and reliability within short cycle times requires effective partnerships between Automobile Manufactures and System, or Sub-System, Suppliers. Future vehicle designs will be more dependent on these relationships than ever before with new requirements being generated by pending legislation and by new functionality which will be offered in the next few years.

We describe techniques of encoding compressed images and video such that the encoded bit stream is resilient to transmission errors which occur on typical noisy channels, particularly to and from mobile users. These errors may occur in the form of random bit errors, bursty bit errors or packet losses, or combinations of these, and the proposed techniques are shown to suffer only gradual and graceful degradation as the error rate increases. This contrasts markedly with the severe error sensitivity of conventional image compression standards, such as JPEG and MPEG. A key tool that we employ is the error resilient entropy code (EREC)6 which largely overcomes the problems of loss of synchronization and severe error propagation, inherent in most entropy coded data streams. Unlike traditional forward error correction methods, the error-resilient techniques which we employ do not add significant redundancy to the compressed data and therefore do not waste capacity or degrade the compression performance under good channel conditions. They are shown to work particularly well with wavelet compression because the localized image defects, which errors do cause, are less visible with wavelets than with DCT-based compression, due to the smoother boundaries of the wavelet basis functions.

This paper describes a real-time correlation tracker realized with Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA). Primarily a method for correlation tracking target has been developed. The main point of this method is to present the reference pattern updating methods we implemented. Then, information on system hardware is given. The correlation tracking circuit is realized by FPGA so autotracker is small, low cost, and it could be used for real time application. Subsequently, system software can be found. System operation is controlled by high speed Digital signal Processor(DSP) TMS320C30. In the end, the results of field-tests with our real-time correlation autotracker show that under complex background and foreground, such as clouds, trees, gasses, our approach can track a flying plane or a moving vehicle steadily.

Among the various Skin diseases Skin Tumors are the most serious ones and skin Melanoma is particularly dangerous. Its malignant evolution lasts about 5 or 6 years and ends with the death of the patient. Early diagnosis is a powerful mean of preventing this evolution allowing sudden intervention which increases probability of recover and survival. Aim of the paper is to present the results of an active support system (ASS) for early diagnosis of melanoma and related skin diseases (experimental prototype). The system is based upon a digital acquisition camera with a dedicated illumination system digitally controlled in order to achieve best performance in color and feature discrimination reaching best signal to noise ratio especially in blue band. A polarization framework allows for reflected ray rejection maximization A new classification approach is presented. It allows for a quantification of morphological patterns and standard parameters in order to implement a Computer Aided dermatological System (CADD). The image information extraction is based on minimal Descriptor Set of parameters in order to classify chromatic texture and morphological features. The results obtained allow for determination of standard reference grids for pathological cases and reliable and objective classification procedure. We adopt, as reference, the approach used by Stanganelli and Kenet. Through a bioengineering analysis we can organize reference grids that offer the possibility to extract the maximum information content from dermatological data. The classification takes into account the Spread (local, point size, global) and Intrinsic Descriptors (morphological, geometric, chromatic, others) and correspond to the best, operative description. Therefore these grids are the more suitable tools for applications which require ASS for diagnosis. Tn fact it Is possible to obtain quantitative evaluations too. The optical flow (OF) can be used to perform motion-based segmentation or 3-D reconstruction. Many techniques have been developed to estimate the OF. Some approaches are based on global assumptions;others deal with local information. Although OF has been studied for more than one decade, reducing the estimation error is still a difficult problem. Generally, algorithms to determine the OF are based on an equation, which links the gradient components of the luminance signal, so as to impose its invariance over time.(1) Therefore, to determine the OF, it is usually necessary to calculate the gradient components in space and time. A new way to approximate this gradient information from a spatio-temporal wavelet decomposition is proposed here. In other words, assuming that the luminance information of the video sequences be represented an a multiresolution structure for compression or transmission purposes, we propose to estimate the luminance gradient components directly from the coefficients of the wavelet transform. Using a multiresolution formalism, rue provide a way to estimate the motion field at different resolution levels. OF estimates obtained at low resolution can be projected at higher resolution levels so as to improve the robustness of the estimation to noise and to better locate the flow discontinuities, while remaining computationally efficient. Results are shown for both synthetic and real-world sequences, comparing it with a non multiresolution approach.

An application case history is detailed where machine vision was implemented in a closed loop process control setting. Specifically, a machine vision system was used to measure dimensions on aseptic packaging. These dimensions were then compared to a nominal value and an error signal was generated based on the measurement deviation from nominal. This error signal was generated by the vision system in the form of a -10Vdc to 10Vdc analog signal proportional to the measurement deviation. In addition, the application made use of low angle lighting techniques, normalized correlation, and automatic part changeover and calibration.

In this paper, we address the issue of designing a two-channel linear phase biorthogonal filter bank that maximizes the two most desired properties for Che wavelet transform in image coding applications, namely, orthogonality and energy compaction. Proper cost functions are formulated for these two criteria and an efficient signal-adaptive optimization algorithm is proposed. Our algorithm is motivated by a number of interesting properties of the correlation matrix of typical image signals, and uses Lifting operations to efficiently represent the degrees of freedom subject to perfect reconstruction conditions. In addition, it offers a successive tradeoff between our two optimization goals. Experimental results on re popular Daubechies 9-7 and 10-18 filter banks reveal that considerable improvements in terms of both orthogonality and energy compaction can be achieved through the proposed optimization technique.

A new gimbal-based, FLIR camera for several types of airborne platforms has been developed. The FLIR is based on a PtSi on silicon technology: developed for high volume and minimum cost. The gimbal scans an area of 360 degrees in azimuth and an elevation range of +15 degrees to -105 degrees. It is stabilized to 25 mu Rad-rms, A combination of uniformity correction, defect substitution, and compact optics results in a long range, low cost FLIR for all low-speed airborne platforms.
