We generalize an existing family of wavelets, coiflets, by replacing the zero-centered vanishing moment condition on scaling functions by a nonzero-centered one in order to obtain a novel class of compactly supported orthonormal wavelets (we call them generalized coiflets). This generalization offers an additional free parameter i.e., the center of mass of the scaling function, which can be tuned to obtain improved characteristics of the resulting wavelet system such as near-symmetry of the scaling functions and wavelets, near-linear phase of the filter banks, and sampling approximation properties. Therefore, these new wavelets are promising in a broad range of applications in signal processing and numerical analysis.

To achieve robust and efficient model-based object recognition, particularly from real outdoor images, we must extract salient information of the objects. Unfortunatly the low-level processing produces most of the time erroneous or incomplete primitives. Towards this end we present an original technique to extract salient segments taking into account the geometrical specificity of the model : parallelism, T-junctions, main directions for example. Our method uses a markovian model defined on the spatial adjacency formed by structured edge primitives, on extracted features measurements and on domain knowledge. In this paper, we describe the Gibbs distribution associated to the proposed model (sites and its components and cliques representing the domain knowledge), We use a deterministic algorithm ICM (Iterated Conditionnal Mode) to generate a sub-optimal configuration, We also describe the energy function to minimise and how we initialize the Markov field We specify the automatic convergence criteria depending on the model, Experimental results on real world images for different model-based recognition will be presented. Finally, we will touch on the implementation aspects and the computational time for real time applications.

Color Management aims for safe and reproducible communication of colors and, among other topics, assumes it can widely correct systematic errors introduced in prepress. Color measuring devices and the errors Introduced in the production process are analyzed to gain information on their systematic/random behaviour. Origin, size and parameters influencing random errors introduced are discussed in tens of possible ways to suppress them and to understand error propagation in the production process. Noise on the printing signal, intentionally addressable color levels and errors due to image data compression are highlighted.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing has matured over the past decade with development in processing approaches that include traditional time-domain methods, popular and efficient frequency-domain methods, and relatively new and more precise chirp-scaling methods. These approaches have been used in various processing applications to achieve various degrees of efficiency and accuracy. One common trait amongst ail SAR data processing algorithms, however, is their iterative and repetitive nature that make them amenable to parallel computing implementation. With SAR's contribution to remote sensing now well-established, the processing throughput demand has steadily increased with each new mission. Parallel computing implementation of SAR processing algorithms is therefore an important means of attaining high SAR data processing throughput to keep up with the ever-increasing science demand. This paper concerns parallel computing implementation of a mode of data called ScanSAR. ScanSAR has the unique advantage of yielding wide swath coverage in a single data collection pass. This mode of data collection has been demonstrated on SIR-C and is being used operationally for the first time on Radarsat. The burst nature of ScanSAR data is a natural candidate for parallel computing implementation. This paper gives a description of such an implementation experience at Alaska SAR Facility for Radarsat ScanSAR mode data. A practical concurrent processing technique is also described that allows further improvement in throughput at a slight increase in system cost.

Inverse-Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) processing algorithms require an explicit or implicit model of the motion of the target, since this information is not measurable at the sensor. A major unsolved problem is whether it is better to develop a deterministic model of the motion or to fit the observations to a mathematical model which may be ambiguous with a wide range of physical target motions. This question is particularly important for the imaging of small targets in ground clutter since the available information on the target motion may be very limited. By contrast, the imaging of large ships in sea clutter yields a wealth of information of the motion of the body. This paper explores the effectiveness of models of the second kind by testing a set of motion estimation algorithms against motor vehicle targets imaged by a high-frequency SAR at long range and low grazing angle. The algorithms attempt to estimate the bulk motion of the vehicle and its rotation about its mean position by fitting many small pieces of information gathered from low quality or short duration scatterers detected in either the raw range-compressed signal history or in the complex image. In forming the motion model, the algorithm avoids undue reliance on particular bright or narrow-Doppler targets in favor of a global fit to many partially resolved or glinting features. The algorithm is demonstrated for 0.3 meter resolution SAR data of a Winnebago van from a Ku-band radar.

It is shown that nanosecond to picosecond fluorescence relaxation phenomena can be accessed for Imaging after double pulse saturation excitation. This new technique has been introduced before as Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (DPFLIm) (Muller et al, 1995), An OPA laser system generating ultra short, widely tunable, high power optical pulses provides the means for the selective excitation of specific fluorophores at sufficient excitation levels to obtain the necessary (partial) saturation of the optical transition. A key element in the developed method is that the correct determination of fluorescence relaxation times does allow for non-uniform saturation conditions over the observation area, This is true for the validation demonstration experiments reported here as well as for imaging applications at a later stage. Measurements on bulk solutions of Rhodamine B and Rhodamine 6G in different. solvents confirm the experimental feasibility of accessing short fluorescence lifetimes with this technique. As only integrated signal detection is required no fast electronics are needed, making the technique suitable for fluorescence lifetime imaging in confocal microscopy, especially when used in combination with bilateral scanning and cooled CCD detection.

In this paper we propose a neural network based method for the automatic detection of ground targets in airborne infrared linescan imagery. Instead of using a dedicated feature extraction stage followed by a classification procedure, we propose the following three step scheme: In the first step of the recognition process, the input image is decomposed into its pyramid representation, thus obtaining a multiresolution signal representation. At the lowest three levels of the Laplacian pyramid a neural network filter of moderate size is trained to indicate the target location. The last step consists of a fusion process of the several neural network filters to obtain the final result. To perform this fusion we use a belief network to combine the various filter outputs in a statistical meaningful way. In addition, the belief network allows the integration of further knowledge about the image domain. By applying this multiresolution recognition scheme, we obtain a nearly scale- and rotational invariant target recognition with a significantly decreased false alarm rate compared with a single resolution target recognition scheme.

A review of early history in photography highlights the origin of cinefilm as a scientific tool for image-based measurement of human and animal motion. The paper is concerned with scanned-area video sensors (CCD) and a computer interface for the real-time, high-resolution extraction of image coordinates of moving markers. Algorithms and implementations an reviewed for the estimation of marker midpoints. Two-valued (above-threshold) representations of the video signal, as well as grey-scale digitizing are discussed. Attainable resolutions and computational effort an presented. Distributed, per-camera processing is a new option, which uses an embedded microcomputer for image reduction to real-time marker midpoint data. Developments are discussed in 3-D camera calibration and in the real-time 3-D matching of marker images, essential in realtime 3-D reconstruction. applications are in 3-D motion capture for animation and in motion analysis of wind turbine rotors.

The highest barriers to wide scale implementation of vision systems have been cost. This is closely followed by the level of difficulty of putting a complete imaging system together. As anyone who has ever been in the position of creating a vision system knows, the various bits and pieces supplied by the many vendors are not under any type of standardization control. In short, unless you are an expert in imaging, electrical interfacing, computers, digital signal processing, and high speed storage techniques, you will likely-spend more money trying to do it yourself rather than to buy the exceedingly expensive systems available. Another alternative is making headway into the imaging market however. The growing investment in highly integrated CMOS based imagers is addressing both the cost and the system integration difficulties. This paper will discuss the benefits gained from CMOS based imaging, and how these benefits are already being applied.

A large area, charge-couple-device (CCD) based fiberoptic taper array detector (APS-1) has been installed at the insertion-device beamline of the Structural Biology Center at the ANL Advanced Photon Source. The detector is used in protein crystallography diffraction experiments, where the objective is to measure the position and intensity of x-ray Bragg peaks in diffraction images. Large imaging area, very high spatial resolution, high x-ray sensitivity, good detective quantum efficiency, low noise, wide dynamic range, excellent stability and short readout time are all fundamental requirements in this application. The APS-1 detector converts the two-dimensional x-ray patterns to a visible light images by a thin layer of x-ray sensitive phosphor. The phosphor coating is directly deposited on the large ends of nine fiberoptic tapers arranged in a 3x3 array. Nine, thermoelectrically cooled 1024 x 1024 pixel CCD's image the patterns, demagnified by the tapers. After geometrical and uniformity corrections, the nine areas give a continuous image of the detector face with virtually no gaps between the individual tapers. The 18 parallel analog signal-processing channels and analog-to-digital converters assure short readout time and low readout noise.
