First, a general procedure for constructing a variety of orthogonal wavelets which are compactly supported in frequency domain is presented. These orthogonal wavelets, as a result of the method of multiresolution analysis (MRA), share the same space structure. This property makes it possible to construct a "combined" orthonormal base of L/sup 2/(R) which contains more than one wavelet functions. This kind of combined orthonormal wavelet bases are more flexible and are expected to be more efficient than the conventional wavelet bases in data compression, speech coding and image coding.

Recent work on dynamic fiber holographic processes is discussed. Fabrication of single-crystal fibers using a laser-heated pedestal growth system is given. Angular and wavelength selectives are calculated which show that wavelength-multiplexed reflection fiber hologram offers higher and uniform selectivity. Channel cross-talk is also evaluated;we show that the cross-talk noise can be subsided by using narrower spectral light source. applications of the fiber hologram to fiber-sensing and also to turnable filters are provided.

This paper intends to present an integrated approach of constructing new spatio-temporal wavelets for discrete signal analysis. The main illustrative field of applications considered here stands as the analysis of digital image sequences. Nevertheless, this can be readily extended to any kind of spatio-temporal signals. Continuous wavelet transforms, continuous series, discretized series and discrete transforms are considered here in an unified way. The analysis to be developed relies only on dynamic parameters like uniform translation and rotation, on kinematic parameters like velocity and speed and on structural parameters as scale and orientation. This digital processing intends to cover the detection and the focalization on motion-based regions of interest in order to perform tracking, classification, segmentation, multiscale trajectory construction and eventually a selective reconstruction of the useful content.

Multiresolution analysis via decomposition into wavelets has been established as an important transform technique in signal processing. A wealth of results is available on this subject, the framework has been extended to treat finite length sequences of size 2/sup n/ (for positive integers n) over finite fields. The paper extends this idea further to provide a framework for dealing with data lengths p/sup n/ for any prime p. This generalization is motivated in part by the need for such transforms for building error correcting codes in the wavelet transform domain. Potential applications and computational complexity issues are discussed as well. We focus on the description of wavelet transforms in terms of perfect reconstruction filter banks.

A fully compatible and scalable coding scheme for super high definition (SHD) video has been developed. Wavelet decomposition is performed such that the low frequency band is of CIF order, which forms a low-resolution core of the full sized video, and is coded by MPEG. The high frequency wavelet coefficients are coded by the proposed virtual zerotree which encodes the wavelets more efficiently than the simple zerotree. Embedded in the scheme is also the hierarchical motion compensation that gives high performance with a large capable compensation range, requires minimum computation, and reduces overhead motion information. With its scalability, data prioritization and precise bit-rate control, the scheme is suitable to code SHD video in multimedia applications.

Theoretical and experimental results of investigations which are leading to the digital TV-based systems for objects in motion against a non-steady-state background detectors design are presented. Specifically, the peculiarities of proposed adaptive threshold-based method of detection was explored for wide range of meteorological and observing conditions. The effect of multiplication objects marks for the spatially distributed moving objects was analyzed and several approaches to consolidation of them are proposed. They are based on threshold value back-feed varying and nonlinear cluster analysis of structures and images in question. The suboptimal algorithm of threshold estimation is developed and discussed. The detected object's motion characteristics influence on the characteristics of image elements is finally experimentally explored Relying on such analysis we propose the combined approach to the motion detection problem. It includes both spatial and temporal structural and statistical characteristics of image element's estimation and simultaneous threshold development of frame's tandem difference and cluster analysis of a resulting 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional bit-matrix range. Some results of image characteristics' influence on detection efficiency are cited and tabulated. The analysis made it apparent that proposed method is highly efficient for the situation of rapidly varying background, when the traditional methods and algorithms have not met with success. The contrast-based methods in this conditions are used in some modern motion detection systems, but seems to be failed as well for meteorological disturbances such as rain, snowfall, etc., presence. The above methods and algorithms make it possible to design one-channel motion detector for detecting spatially distributed objects against non-steady-state background based on Intel Dx-4/120 or Pentium processor. Specially developed framegrabber is used for digitizing of original B&W TV signal.

This paper presents a new shape representation method for progressive image coding at very-low bit rate. A real application in a railway surveillance system for unattended level-crossings is considered. First, semantic information, e.g., classification of possible obstacles provided by a recognition subsystem, is sent to a remote control center, then, binary shape information is transmitted, in order to allow the remote operator to validate the alarm situation. Pictorial information can be required as a further step by the operator of the control center.

This paper presents a video coding scheme for very low bit rate applications. The coding approach relies on the notion of active meshes and can be viewed as a particular case of region-based coding. The active mesh is used to efficiently represent and code the various regions of the scene as well as the motion information. The algorithm involves the following steps: projection (time tracking of the regions); partition and motion coding; synthesis; modification of the mesh topology (introduction of new regions and elimination of useless regions); and texture coding.

This paper describes a system that has been designed and built at AT&T Bell Labs for studying transmission of real- time MPEG-2 video over ATM networks for multi-cast applications. The set-up comprises a hardware real-time MPEG-2 video, audio and system encoder, an ATM network adaptation module for MPEG-2 transport over AAL-5, and ATM switch, a software system decoder and a hardware elementary stream decoder. The MPEG-2 transport stream has been characterized in terms of robustness to errors. This preliminary study showed the higher importance of the structural information of the stream (PES packet headers TS headers, sequence, picture headers, etc.) with respect to the coded video data (motion vectors, DCT coefficients, etc.). A brief study of the current MPEG-2 hardware decoding architectures allowed us to better understand the effects of bit-stream errors on the resulting video quality. In our experiments, while the loss of some structural data such as picture start codes led the hardware decoder to loose synchronization or to freeze, the loss of video data only affected the image quality. Furthermore the recovery times from a loss of synchronization were orders of magnitude higher than the recovery from some video data loss. An error-resilient real-time software transport stream decoder has been developed. In multiplex-wide operations (i.e. operations on the entire transport stream) it takes advantage of ring buffers and manages the timing information appropriately. In video-stream specific operations it uses resynchronization mechanisms at the picture level which exploit the redundancy of the PES and transport stream syntax. Furthermore time data transfers between the system decoder and the elementary stream decoder are employed. Experiments show that proper use of these methods can significantly improve the system performance.

The depth of focus in sub-half micron lithography is about plus or minus 5 micrometers , several factors, such as field image curvature, circuit topography, wafer flatness error and auto-focus errors, reduce the usable focus margin. To minimize these focus margin decreasing factors, multi-point focus detection and/or field chip leveling control should be required before every exposure. Even the cases, global deviations of wafer and chuck flatness errors are being corrected with the good field leveling system, the focus sensing accuracy must stay in the plus or minus 0.075 micrometers region for all the exposure field. In the conventional optical auto- focus systems, small spot sizes probe beam was used, and the focus signal can be affected strongly by local variations in reflectance, scattering on the wafer surface and wafer flatness. Whereas probe beam scan type auto-focus system, newly developed in this work, has a large focus measurement area, and it averages out the errors which decrease the usable depth of focus. In this work, a new optical auto-focus system for sub-half micron lithography tools will be presented and its characteristics and applications will be discussed. It is composed of a probe beam scan mirror and a position sensing detector, and is insensitive to the structures on the wafer surface. Also, the theoretical analysis of focus measurement error, per the probe beam width and wafer pattern topology will be discussed.
