The paper focuses on the moire technique as a tool of biomedical measurement. The real advantage of moire measurement in muscle pulsing lies in solving no contact requirement problems for which the measured system needs whole field monitoring and quick response. With the moire optical measurement system and a video camera we obtained the detail analysis of the behavior of muscle pulsing. Post-processing procedures were performed by an imageprocessing system. The moire system was compared with a fiber optical sensor, our fiber sensing head is multiple fiber bounding with novel devices to prevent the confusion on front slope and back slope in the relation of displacement and signal intensity. The fiber optical sensor gives the reference displacement and velocity value of the major point of the muscle. In this study we also discuss the possible applications of the moire auto-measurement system in muscle pulsing.

We propose a hybrid optical/electronic imageprocessing system for the real-time implementation of a wavelet transform. Specifically, the difference-of-Gaussians (DOG) wavelet is synthesized in the hybrid system and used to process an input object. In the implementation, two laser beams with different temporal frequencies are first generated by an acousto-optic modulator. The two optical beams are then combined spatially and used to scan and process the object. The scattered light from the object is then picked up by a photodetector. The photodetector's electrical output signal, after appropriate electronic filtering, represents a scanned and processed version of the original object and can be sent to a monitor for real-time display or to a digital storage device for possible further processing. Because the hybrid system is based on optical scanning, it is an incoherent system and hence has a much better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as compared to its coherent counterpart. Experimental results are presented and shown to be in excellent agreement with computer simulations.

A face recognition system has been developed and demonstrated at the Rutgers University Center for Computer Aids for Industrial Productivity. The system uses a preliminary data reduction step, gray scale projection, and a fast transform technique to greatly reduce the computational complexity of the problem and, consequently, the cost of high-speed implementation. The decision function is a new, extremely cost-effective neural network, the Mammone/Sankar Neural Tree Network. This paper examines the use of gray scale projection in detail, and demonstrates the use of 1D signalprocessing techniques in 2D imaging applications. This paper is concerned with the data compression and interpolation of multi-view image. In this paper, we propose a novel disparity compensation method based on geometric relationship. We first investigate the geometric relationship between a point in the object space and its projection onto view images. Then, we propose the disparity compensation scheme that utilizes the geometric constraints between view images. This scheme is used to compress the multi-view image into the structure of the triangular patches and the texture data on the surface of the patches. This scheme not only compresses the multi-view image but also synthesizes the view images from any viewpoints in the viewing zone. We report the experiment where three sets of multi-view image were used as original images and the amount of data was reduced to 1/20 with SNR 34 dB.

Optoelectronic wavelet-processor implementations based on Smartt interferometry are described for both one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) wavelet transforms. The 1-D processor study focuses on the processor's capability to perform the wavelet transform when the wavelets are defined in the time domain. The experimental results indicate that the system preserves all the phase information of the selected mother wavelets and thus delivers the true wavelet transform. The 2-D version of the processor is designed for the implementation of the complex wavelet transform. This processor will be valuable for applications, such as image coding-decoding, for which the preservation of phase information is necessary. A pair of prototype processors that incorporates the 1-D and the 2-D systems has been built and tested to mechanical vibrations. High-quality reconstructed images were also obtained from the experimental data. The proposed systems have great potential for many practical applications.

A fairly good accuracy and speed in detecting the feature points of eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth have been achieved by a pair of complementary templates. This paper deals with the comparison in different motion vector coding methods suitable for motion compensated image communication systems. Both waveform and description coding techniques are presented and applied to a dense motion field. Only lossless compression is considered, and a reduction factor between 3:1 and 9:1 of the raw bit rate of the motion vectors can be reached. Although some of these techniques have already been used for the coding of motion information it would be greatly interesting to compare them in the same conditions, with intent to apply them to professional motion compensated applications as opposed to the particular case of motion compensated picture coding.

Multi-dimensional (MD) systems are widely used in scientific applications such as imageprocessing, geophysical signalprocessing and fluid dynamics. Earlier scheduling methods in synthesizing MD systems do not explore loop pipelining across different dimensions. This paper explores the basic properties of MD loop pipelining and presents an algorithm, called multi-dimensional rotation scheduling, to find an efficient schedule based on the multi-dimensional retiming technique we developed. The description and the correctness of our algorithm are presented in the paper. The experiments show that our algorithm can achieve optimal results efficiently.

Taking advantage of both optical and microwave remote sensing images with their complementary information, image fusion becomes a valuable approach to provide and improve up-to-date space maps in frequently cloud covered areas such as the humid Tropics. Remotely sensed data from north of the Netherlands is processed for test and calibration purposes. Later on it is planned to implement the methodology in Indonesia; the selected research area is situated on Sumatra. This paper gives an overview about the existing techniques and presents first results of fusing ERS- 1 SAR data with SPOT and LANDSAT TM investigating different combinations of fusion techniques and input imagery in terms of orbit, looking angle and spectral/spatial resolution. It is anticipated to provide an optimized fusion approach which takes into account the parameters which influence the accuracy and information extraction possibilities of fused data in relation to mapping and map updating in tropical developing countries.
