This paper proposes a time- shifting method referred to as pretransfer which transfers presentation data in background during the session, without user involvement. Bandwidth compression for high definition television (HDTV) relies heavily on 2-D motion parameter acquisition from image sequences. Wu et al. proposed a differential method for estimation of 2-D motion parameters. In this paper we will present a new iterative method to estimate the motion parameters. We take use of the square error of intensity of two successive frames of image in interested region as an energy function. The steepest gradient descent method is directly applied to the error function and an iterative algorithm without neglecting any terms involving high orders is established. A lot of simulation results show that the algorithm can be successfully applied to motion estimation from image sequences. Two typical tests are demonstrated in the paper. We expect to implement the algorithm on a neural network and realize simultaneous computation.

M-band generalizations of the FIR (finite impulse response) wavelets of I. Daubechies (1988) have been introduced. The authors present a set of explicit construction techniques for these M-band wavelet filters, and the results of their application to image compression. A characterization of several equivalent notions of Nth-order regularity for M-band perfect reconstruction filters is presented. This characterization is used to devise a closed-form expression for Nth-order regular wavelet lowpass filters. The construction of a full M-band filter bank given a lowpass filter and a rank M unitary matrix is completed. Several of these new wavelets are applied to image coding.< >

Several issues must be resolved before confidence in infrared thermography nondestructive evaluation (NDE) approaches that of more established NDE methodologies. Foremost among these are system sensitivity, repeatability, and interpretation of results. In recent years, synchronous imaging techniques have been demonstrated using a computer to control the thermal excitation, infrared image acquisition, and imageprocessing. Advantages include simplified system setup and operation, repeatable measurements, and signal-to-noise ratio enhancement. In late 1991, LASC began a beta-site evaluation of a prototype Thermal Wave Imaging (TWI) system developed by the Institute for Manufacturing Research at Wayne State Univ. (Detroit, MI). This prototype is the forerunner of a production version currently under development for commercial offering as a fully integrated thermal NDE system. applications will include quality assurance of manufactured aerospace composite structures and inspection for first and second-layer corrosion in aluminum (aging) aircraft structures. This paper describes the prototype system, and discusses results of specific experiments selected to demonstrate present capabilities of the system.

Recent advances in mathematical theory related to the representation of signals and images by some limited-extent-wave functions have generated substantial interest in applications of waveforms that are localized in both time (space) and frequency (spatial frequency) domains to signal and imageprocessing, pattern recognition, data compression, and neural networks. As a particularly useful model, the so-called wavelet transforms provide a variety of multiresolution signal (image) time-frequency or space-frequency decomposition tools. Digital parallel implementations of the wavelet transforms are computationally intensive both because of the nature of the coordinate dilation and erosion of these transforms and because of the large quantity of convolution/correlation operations accompanied. This paper is intended to outline some of the most useful properties of the wavelet transforms, their similarities, and differences to other known joint representations. The links between the wavelet transforms and optics also are discussed.

Two types of artificial neural networks are introduced for the robust classification of spatio- temporal sequences. The first network is the Adaptive Spatio-Temporal Recognizer (ASTER), which adaptively estimates the confidence that a (variable length) signal of a known class is present by continuously monitoring a sequence of feature vectors. If the confidence for any class exceeds a threshold value at some moment, the signal is considered to be detected and classified. The nonlinear behavior of ASTER provides more robust performance than the related dynamic time warping algorithm. ASTER is compared with a more common approach wherein a self-organizing feature map is first used to map a sequence of extracted feature vectors onto a lower dimensional trajectory, which is then identified using a variant of the feedforward time delay neural network. The performance of these two networks is compared using artificial sonograms as well as feature vectors strings obtained from short-duration oceanic signals.

Thermal wave imaging (TWI) has typically relied upon HgCdTe optomechanical scanning radiometers in the 8 - 12 micrometers spectral range for image acquisition. However, recent improvements in manufacturing technology, spatial resolution, and device efficiency make PtSi and InSb focal plane array (FPA) cameras an attractive alternative in the 2 - 5 micrometers spectral range. We have compared the performance of off-the-shelf imagers of both scanning HgCdTe, and PtSi and InSb FPA types, in typical TWI applications, such as boxcar imageprocessing of plastics and metals. The relative merits of detecting transient surface temperature variations in the 2 - 5 and 8 - 12 micrometers bands are discussed.

Picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) have to handle a lot of moving or still images services with different resolution levels (HDTV-like, TV-like and lower resolutions), quality requirements (from acceptable visual quality to lossless) and different priorities. In this paper we present a new system for the integration of hierarchical images transmission in a broadband network based on the DQDB protocol (IEEE 802.6 standard). This system is based on the combination of two new tools. First we have designed a multiresolution/multiquality image coding scheme based on wavelet transforms. The main original feature of the algorithm is that it allows a multiresolution lossless access to images. A greater compression ration is possible at the price of graceful degradations. Secondly, we have implemented an improved priority mechanism in the DQDB protocol. The aim was that, in case of network overload, the emissions lose quality but are always maintained. A simulation of the implementation of such a system for the handling of the communications inside a hospital is also presented.

In this paper we consider a technique for achieving fast computing and fast convergence multichannel digital signalprocessing based on reducing the dimension of processing space. Parallel decomposition of the multidimensional processing to basic transforms is proposed.
