This study presents the development of NeuralCasting, a front-end compiler framework capable of converting (casting) neural networks encoded in the ONNX format to optimized C code. The primary objective is to enable the compilation of neural networks depending only on standard C libraries, thus eliminating the need for a separate inference engine, such as ONNX runtime. Furthermore, this feature allows the generation of C code suitable both for bare metal embedded devices and other resource-constrained devices, extending model applicability to a plethora of hardware targets. The framework addresses critical applications such as real-time audio processing, especially regarding latency constraints. As an example use case, we compile three different models: a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) composed of fully connected layers, a ResNet cell for image recognition, and an NSNet 2 for speech enhancement and noise suppression. We analyze and compare the performance with other widely used frameworks, such as ONNX Runtime and PyTorch. Our findings indicate that the developed compiler successfully generates optimized C code that meets real-time processing requirements for latency-sensitive applications, outperforming ONNX Runtime and PyTorch and reaching a speedup close to $\mathbf{x} 10$ for small-sized MLP models, which are suitable for deployment on edge devices.

This paper presents a novel and robust method for achieving 4x upscaling of facial images, leveraging the UNET++ architecture and applied to the widely recognized Flickr-Faces-HQ (FFHQ) dataset comprising high-resolution 512x512 images. The study systematically explores the performance of four distinct UNET++ model sizes, each offering a unique balance between computational efficiency and upscaling quality. Through extensive experimentation, the proposed approach demonstrates remarkable prowess in preserving intricate facial features, enhancing texture details, and maintaining visual realism during the upscaling process. Notably, the best-performing model exhibits an impressive average Peak signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 30.465 dB, a Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) of 0.859 and a Multiscale SSIM (MS-SSIM) of 0.976, establishing a new standard of excellence in facial image upscaling. These findings contribute to the advancement of image processing techniques, particularly in the context of facial imagery, and hold profound implications for a wide range of applications, including computer graphics, image enhancement, and face recognition systems.

Labelled data are limited and self-supervised learning is one of the most important approaches for reducing labelling requirements. While it has been extensively explored in the image domain, it has so far not received the same amount of attention in the acoustic domain. Yet, reducing labelling is a key requirement for many acoustic applications. Specifically in bioacoustic, there are rarely sufficient labels for fully supervised learning available. This has led to the widespread use of acoustic recognisers that have been pre-trained on unrelated data for bioacoustic tasks. We posit that training on the actual task data and combining self-supervised pre-training with few-shot classification is a superior approach that has the ability to deliver high accuracy even when only a few labels are available. To this end, we introduce and evaluate a new architecture that combines CNN-based preprocessing with feature extraction based on state space models (SSMs). This combination is motivated by the fact that CNN-based networks alone struggle to capture temporal information effectively, which is crucial for classifying acoustic signals. SSMs, specifically S4 and Mamba, on the other hand, have been shown to have an excellent ability to capture long-range dependencies in sequence data. We pre-train this architecture using contrastive learning on the actual task data and subsequent fine-tuning with an extremely small amount of labelled data. We evaluate the performance of this proposed architecture for (n-shot, n-way) classification on standard benchmarks as well as real-world data. Our evaluation shows that it outperforms state-of-the-art architectures on the few-shot classification problem.

Approximate computing is an innovative circuit paradigm for lower power and real time image processing architecture within an intelligent satellite. Multiplication and addition are often fundamental functions for many image processing applications. Based on previous approximate compressor designs, a recursive type multiplier is first proposed. A reduced gate-level complexity full adder is then proposed. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed designs achieve significant reductions in area, power and delay compared with exact recursive multiplier and adders, as well as other approximate designs found in the technical literature. An image processing application is performed to further show that the performance of the proposed approximate designs for image processing achieves a very good accuracy (measured by the peak signal to noise ratio) as well as substantial reductions in power dissipation and delay. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Vertical federated learning (VFL) enables collaborative machine learning on vertically partitioned data with privacy-preservation, attracting widespread attentions from academia and industry. Most existing VFL methods face two daunting challenges in real-world applications. First, most VFL methods assume at least one party holds the complete set of labels of all data samples. However, this assumption often violates the nature of many scenarios, where the parties only have partial labels. Second, the limitation of computational and communication resources in participated parties may cause the straggler problem and slow down training convergence. To address these challenges, we propose a novel VFL algorithm named Cascade Vertical Federated Learning (CVFL), in which partitioned labels can be fully utilized to train neural networks. To mitigate the straggler problem, we design a novel optimization objective to increase straggler's contribution to the trained models. We conduct comprehensive experiments and the results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of CVFL. © 2022 IEEE.

The article developed an approach to automated analysis images obtained in the visible and thermal imaging range by a system consisting of two separate cameras. For the generated images, a technique is proposed for the parallel application of algorithms for primary data processing (filtering and blur restoration method), searching for communication elements between data and performing geometric transformations over them, necessary for their combination. To identify elements with elevated temperatures, a primary (normal) thermal gradient mask is created. For simplicity, the resulting mask image is simplified. The simplification method is based on a nonlinear change in the image's bitness by analyzing histograms of color gradients. Next, a mask of threshold values for objects recorded by the optical system is formed. The paper proposes an algorithm for the averaged comparison of the received data and identifying areas where the values are exceeded. The advantage of the developed approach is its versatility. The use of one tuned system makes it possible to signal the cutting tool's wear, the presence of inclusions (inhomogeneities) in the workpiece part, wear of the bearings or elements of the robotic complex (machine tool). The set of test data provides an example of applying the proposed approach for analyzing the production process of cutting metal using a waterjet machine and milling a part on a numerically controlled machine.

This review paper presents the use of hybrid Vehicle-to-Everything (V2x) communication systems to detect and prioritize emergency vehicles in congested urban areas. To reduce response times, researchers are merging edge processing with Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2x). The technology provides extremely fast, low-latency connections, which are essential for real-time applications, by utilizing recent developments in 5G and edge computing. To increase detection accuracy in noisy urban settings, researchers are experimenting with multi-sensor fusion systems that combine GPS, acoustic sensors, and AI-powered vision. Adaptive traffic signal preemption algorithms that dynamically modify traffic flows to grant priority access to emergency vehicles are also being investigated in some research. Despite its promise, there are still obstacles to be addressed, such as interoperability problems and network congestion. However, the benefits might be enormous: quicker emergency reactions, more seamless traffic patterns, and generally more effective urban transportation systems. In the upcoming years, we should witness some fascinating breakthroughs as researchers continue to hone these technologies.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) microscopy is a label-free vibrational imaging technique that delivers chemical maps of cells and tissues. Broadband CARS (BCARS) combines narrowband pump pulses with broadband Stokes pulses to record broad vibrational spectra. Despite many technological advancements, BCARS microscopes still struggle to image biological samples spanning the entire Raman active region of biological samples (400-3100 cm -1 ). Here, we demonstrate a novel BCARS method to answer this need. Our experimental setup is based on a femtosecond fiber laser at 1035 nm and 2 MHz repetition rate, thus delivering high energy pulses used for generating sub-20 fs broadband Stokes pulses by white-light continuum in a bulk YAG crystal, a compact and alignment-insensitive technique. Combining them with narrowband picosecond pulses, we can generate a CARS signal with high (< 10 cm -1 ) spectral resolution in the entire Raman window. The system is equipped with a home-made transmission microscope to image cells and tissue at high-speed (< 3 ms) and large field of views. Using a post-processing pipeline, we deliver high-quality chemical maps, identifying the main chemical compounds in cancer cells and discriminating tumorous from healthy regions in liver slices of mouse models, unveiling the path for applications in histopathological settings.

In applications such as digital signal processing and machine learning, the accuracy of internal operations is not so strict due to the limitation of human perception. Approximate computing has been focused as an effective way to trade off energy against accuracy. In this paper, a new type of approximate floating-point (FP) multiplier is proposed by applying radix-8 Booth encoding to the mantissa part. We devise the addition of the triple of multiplicand in radix-8 Booth encoding. Experimental results show the proposed design can achieve significant reduction in area, delay and power up to 66.48%, 23.39% and 69.02% while losing only 0.18% accuracy when compared with the IEEE-754 single precision FP multiplier. The proposed multipliers are applied to image smoothing and image compression and show negligible quality loss. © 2021 IEEE.

Automated Target Detection and Recognition (ATD/R) of targets in a cluttered background presents major challenges for the designers of military sensor systems. To achieve acceptable levels of detection and recognition performance, extensive use is often made of complex image processing techniques such as neural network architectures which attempt to replicate the capabilities of the human vision system. Although such methods generate good levels of performance, they are often not suitable for those applications where smaller and lower cost sensor systems are used across a more diverse range of scene content and imaging conditions. A new approach is proposed here where system performance is achieved through a more effective balance between optical domain and post-detection processing. Specifically, the signal to Clutter Ratio (SCR) is maximised by using broadband spectral and polarisation information to offset performance deficiencies associated with simple image and data processing functions. It is shown that this approach offers a basis for introducing ATD/R functionality in low cost imaging systems such as those flown on drones. A simple imaging system is used to demonstrate the concept, which compromises two broadband cameras operating in the visible and near infrared bands, and with one of the sensors additionally providing polarimetric information. The concept of a joint spectral polarisation weight map is proposed and the potential performance gain is illustrated using targets in moderate to high clutter situations. The results obtained indicate potential benefits for future ATD/R systems and it is hoped that this will encourage future design engineers to consider the wider use of optical domain information.
