A family of matrix filters are introduced through approximations to directional digital derivatives. images can be sharpened by combining all the eight directional filtered images together. The two parameters in the filter family are determined by desired PSNR so that a given image is sharpened with optimized PSNR. Demonstrations by using standard images and a simple performance analysis are given.

Point cloud imaging has emerged as an efficient and popular solution to represent immersive visual information. However, the large volume of data generated in the acquisition process reveals the need of efficient compression solutions in order to store and transmit such contents. Several standardization committees are in the process of finalizing efficient compression schemes to cope with the large volume of information that point clouds require. At the same time, recent efforts on learning-based compression approaches have been shown to exhibit good performance in the coding of conventional image and video contents. It is currently an open question how learning-based coding performs when applied to point cloud data. In this study, we extend recent efforts on the matter by exploring neural network implementations for separate, or joint compression of geometric and textural information from point cloud contents. Two alternative architectures are presented and compared;that is, a unified model that learns to encode point clouds in a holistic way, allowing fine-tuning for quality preservation per attribute, and a second paradigm consisting of two cascading networks that are trained separately to encode geometry and color, individually. A baseline configuration from the best-performing option is compared to the MPEG anchor, showing better performance for geometry and competitive performance for color encoding at low bit-rates. Moreover, the impact of a series of parameters is examined on the network performance, such as the selection of input block resolution for training and testing, the color space, and the loss functions. Results provide guidelines for future efforts in learning-based point cloud compression.

Stress analysis and assessment of affective states of mind using ECG as a physiological signal is a burning research topic in biomedical signal processing. However, existing literature provides only binary assessment of stress, while multiple levels of assessment may be more beneficial for healthcare applications. Furthermore, in present research, ECG signal for stress analysis is examined independently in spatial domain or in transform domains but the advantage of fusing these domains has not been fully utilized. To get the maximum advantage of fusing diferent domains, we introduce a dataset with multiple stress levels and then classify these levels using a novel deep learning approach by converting ECG signal into signal images based on R-R peaks without any feature extraction. Moreover, We made signal images multimodal and multidomain by converting them into time-frequency and frequency domain using Gabor wavelet transform (GWT) and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) respectively. Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs) are used to extract features from different modalities and then decision level fusion is performed for improving the classification accuracy. The experimental results on an in-house dataset collected with 15 users show that with proposed fusion framework and using ECG signal to image conversion, we reach an average accuracy of 85.45%.

Obtaining labeled data for machine listening applications is expensive because labeling audio data requires humans listening to recordings. However, state-of-the-art deep learning based systems usually require large amounts of labeled data to be trained with. A solution for this problem is to train a neural network with a large collection of unlabeled data to extract embeddings and then use these embeddings to train a shallow classifier on a small but labeled dataset suitable for the application. One example are Look, Listen, and Learn (L3-Net) embeddings, which are trained self-supervised to capture audio-visual correspondence in videos. Since shallow classifiers are trained discriminatively and thus tacitly assume a closed-set classification task, they do not perform well in open-set classification tasks. In this paper, a neural network that combines all L3-Net embeddings belonging to one recording into a single vector by using an x-vector mechanism as well as an open-set classification system based on that are presented. In experiments conducted on the open-set acoustic scene classification task belonging to the DCASE challenge 2019, the proposed system significantly outperforms a shallow discriminative classifier and all other previously published systems, while at the same time performing equally well as a shallow classifier on multiple closed-set machine listening datasets.

As deep learning-based algorithms keep leading the data segmentation tasks, many efforts are being conducted for their applications in the processing of pulsed thermography sequences. Conventional data preprocessing methods, such as pulsed phase transformation and principal component analysis are still popular in the community as data enhancement methods to improve contrasts and signal-noise ratio in infrared images. In this contribution, the impact of applying two conventional preprocessing methods for pulsed thermography data on the performance and learning computational time of deep learning methods is evaluated. The presented deep learning methods are based on the Encoder-Decoder architectural form, specifically a U-Net and a SegNet. The results show that by applying the conventional transform, the training time for deep learning methods can be significantly reduced. Compared to the results on the original infrared data, the performance on the preprocessed data is kept relatively high, as demonstrated on polyvinyl chloride specimens.

Digital holography is an emerging technology for 3D visualization which is expected to dethrone conventional stereoscopic devices in the future. Aside from their specific signal properties, high quality holograms with broad viewing angles contain massive amount of data. For a reasonable transmission time, efficient scalable compression schemes are needed to bridge the gap between the overwhelming volume of data and the limited bandwidth of the communication channels. The viewpoint scalability is a powerful property since it allows to encode and transmit only the information corresponding to the observer's view. However, this approach imposes an online encoding at the server which may increase the latency of the transmission chain. To overcome this hurdle, we propose a scalable compression framework based on Gabor-wavelets decomposition, where the whole hologram is encoded offline. First, the observer plane is divided into spatial blocks. Then, the Gabor atoms are assigned to these blocks by exploiting the duality between Gabor wavelets and light rays. The atoms of each block are then classified into different layers according to their importance for the reconstruction and encoded in packets. At the decoder side, the atoms' packets are progressively decoded based on the viewer's position. Then, the corresponding sub-hologram is generated using a GPU implementation. Results show that our approach enables a practical progressive streaming of digital holograms with a low latency.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have proven to be promising in various applications such as audio recognition, image classification, and video understanding. Different dimensions of CNNs (e.g., 1D, 2D, and 3D CNNs) are proposed to adapt to these applications. To accelerate different dimensional convolution, a uniform accelerator is necessary. Nevertheless, the implementation poses a significant challenge due to several observations. Firstly, computational complexity, network mapping methods, and data reuse strategies vary greatly among different dimensional convolutional neural networks. Secondly, various efficient algorithms such as Winograd have been proposed to accelerate CNNs, but their implementations lack flexible support for different network types. Typically, the Winograd-base accelerator is designed for 1-stride and the non-1-stride methods haven’t been implemented on 3D CNNs. To address these challenges, we propose a flexible Winograd-based uniform accelerator (FWUA) for 1D/2D/3D CNNs. With adaptive support for different dimensions, strides, and filter sizes, FWUA is runtime-reconfigurable for different dimensions of CNNs applications, i.e., audio, image, and video. The FWUA is verified on the xilinx ZCU102 evaluation board FPGA. Our design achieves 1.51/1.13/0.66 (GOPS/DSP) DSP-efficiency and 242/181/105 (GOPS/W) energy-efficiency in C3D, VGG-16, and HAR-CNNs, which are up to 2x comparing to state-of-the-art FPGA works.

We propose a method to measure a threedimensional (3D) trajectory using asynchronous stationary stereo cameras placed such that each camera is in the other's view angle. Time shift estimation between the two image sequences is performed by minimizing the sum of squares of distance between the two lines of sight from stereo cameras in the frame unit and further in subframe. The 3D position of the target is obtainable using an interpolated target image position at the estimated subframe time. The method enables the use of commercially available digital cameras in an outdoor environment. Furthermore, it requires no impractically large calibration target or any estimation of the fundamental matrix.

Time-lenses in general proved to be useful for many applications and specifically when utilizing them for temporal imaging schemes where they can image ultrafast signals that cannot be detected by any electronic based device. Over the last few years, we demonstrated that when joining together several time-lenses into a single time-lens array, it is possible to gain more information on the input signal. Such as measuring temporal depth imaging, the state of polarization of the input signal as a function of time, and retrieving the phase dynamics. However, when designing an array of time-lenses, there is a trade-off between joining large number of small time-lenses, so each signal will interact with many time-lenses but each one has low resolution, and joining small number of large time-lenses, so each has better temporal resolution but on the expanse of interacting with smaller number of time-lenses in the array. We showed that one way to overcome this drawback is to overlap adjacent time-lenses. Thus it is possible to both have large number of time-lenses without compromising on the size of each time-lens and obtaining high temporal resolution. In this proceeding, we overlap two time-lenses and measure the spectrum of the idler. We compare the numerical simulations of the frequency domain of the idler to the measured spectrum of the idler.
