Nowadays, Deep Learning DL becoming more and more interesting in many areas, such as genomics, security, data analysis, image, and video processing. However, DL requires more and more powerful and parallel computing. The calculation performed by super-machines equipped with powerful processors, such as the latest GPUs. Despite their power, these computing units consume a lot of energy, which makes their use very difficult in small embedded systems and edge computing. To overcome the problem for which we must keep the maximum performance and satisfy the power constraint, it is necessary to use a heterogeneous strategy. Some solutions are promising when using less energy consuming electronic circuits, such as FPGAs associated with less expensive topologies such as Stacked Sparse Autoencoders. Our target architecture is the xilinx ZYNQ 7020 SoC, which combines a dual-core ARM processor and an FPGA in the same chip. In the interest of flexibility, we decided to leverage the performance of xilinx's high-level synthesis tools, evaluate and choose the best solution in terms of size and performance of the data exchange, synchronization and pipeline processing. The results show that our implementation gives high performance at very low energy consumption. Indeed, the evaluation of our accelerator shows that it can classify 1160 MNIST images per second, consuming only 0.443 W; 2.4 W for the entire system. More than the low energy consumption and the high performance, the platform used only costs $ 125.

Video related technology has grown rapidly due to the progress of digital devices such as virtual reality, 3D cameras, 3D films, and 3D display and Internet. During video acquisition and processing (compression, transmission, and reproduction) they may suffer some types of distortions which lead degradation and has a direct effect on the subjective sensation about human eyes. Moreover, the subjective evaluation is boring, time-consuming, and we do not have a specialist to do this kind of work. So, it is necessary to evaluate the quality of the videos by computers. Which means that the video quality evaluation/assessment has become vital. The goal of video quality assessment is to predict the perceptual quality for improving the performance of practical video application systems. In other words, the users' experience is worse, so we need a metric to measure the distortions. The commonly used videos' quality assessment methods: a) consider the video as a sequence of two-dimensional images and the videos' quality assessment (scores) computing by weighted averaging of per frames (2D images) score, which conflicts with the fact that a video signal is a 3D volume and which ignores the movement features, b) are designed for specific distortions (for example blockiness and blurriness). In this paper, we present a novel deep learning architecture for no-reference video quality assessment. It based on a 3D convolutional neural network and generative adversarial network (GAN). We evaluate the proposed approach on the LIVE, ECVQ, TID2013 and EVVQ databases. Computer simulations show that the proposed video quality assessment: a) get convergence on a small amount of data, b) more "universal"- it can be used for different video quality degradation, including denoising, deblocking, deconvolution, and c) outperforms existing no-reference video quality assessment/ methods. Human activity classification is a critical part of intelligent human-computer interaction, which is promising in various applications. The radar system provides a complementary input when the visible light cannot work. It can effectively tackle darkness, occlusion, and non-line-of sight conditions. The frequency modulation induced by the micromotion of human movements can be captured and utilized by radar systems. Currently, the integration of deep learning methods and classical signal processing has been more and more prominent in the radar-based human behaviour sensing field. In this work, we propose a compact deep learning model to classify various human activities by the corresponding frequency modulation. Considering most deep neural networks are both data-hungry and resource-hungry, we integrate transfer learning and network pruning techniques to reduce the number of labelled training samples and computational burden. The experiments demonstrate that our method not only outperforms convolutional neural networks trained from scratch but also significantly slims its model size and computing operations.

This paper presents an improvement of nondestructive testing evaluation of inside parts of an object using the digital image processing of radiographic image obtained with high energy x-ray of 7.5 MeV from Betatron a distance of 1 meter from an object of interest. The objective was to enhance the contrast of edges of an object under inspection using the colored synthetic enhancement method. As an example, x-ray tube containing lead inside was radiographed by the high energy x-ray and recorded by imaging plate as image detector.

Infrared thermal imager has developed rapidly in the field of military and civilian applications. How to objectively evaluate the imaging effect of the infrared thermal imager has become a problem that must be solved. Which not only provides quantitative mathematical description for the imaging performance of the infrared thermal imager, but also provides the supporting basis for the study of the image sharpness, target detection distance and target tracking performance of the infrared imaging system. The imaging evaluation system of thermal infrared imager proposed in this paper has the functions of infrared image data acquisition and processing. It is used to test and evaluate infrared image data in coordination with the target system of infrared imaging evaluation (composed of blackbody, radiation target console, collimating optical system and digital display precision turntable). The system has designed the main performance indexes, mathematical model and steps of image evaluation, including image non-uniformity, signal Transfer Function (SiTF), Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) three indicators to evaluate the noise and response characteristics of infrared thermal imager, and Angular Linearity, Target Imaging Positioning Angle Error two indicators to evaluate the image resolution characteristics of infrared thermal imager. After system testing, the performance is very superior and it becomes the necessary debugging and testing equipment in the development of infrared thermal imager.

Hyperspectral imaging sensors acquire images in a large number of spectral bands, unlike traditional electro-optical and infrared sensors which sample only one or few bands. Hyperspectral mosaic sensors acquire an image of all spectral bands in one shot. Using a patterned array of spectral filters they measure different wavelength bands at different pixel locations, but this comes at the cost of a lower spatial resolution, as the sampling per spectral band is lower. Software algorithms can compensate for this loss in spatial sampling in each spectral channel. Here we compare the image quality obtained with spatial bicubic interpolation and two categories of super resolution algorithms: two single frame super resolution algorithms which exploit spectral redundancies in the data and two multiframe super resolution algorithms which exploit spatio-temporal structure. We make a quantitative assessment of the spatial and spectral image reconstruction quality on synthetic data as well as on semi-synthetic mosaic sensor data for applications in security and medical domains. Our results show that multi frame super resolution provides the best spatial and signal-to-noise quality. The single frame super resolution approaches score lower on spatial sharpness but do provide a substantial improvement compared to mere spatial interpolation, while providing in some cases the best spectral quality.

Spontaneous brain activity is an important biomarker for various neurological and psychological conditions and can be measured using resting functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rfMRI). Since brain activity during rest is spontaneous, it is not possible to directly compare rfMRI time-courses across subjects. Moreover, the spatial configuration of functionally specialized brain regions can vary across subjects throughout the cortex limiting our ability to make precise spatial comparisons. We describe a new approach to jointly align and synchronize fMRI data in space and time across a group of subjects. We build on previously described methods for inter-subject spatial "Hyper-Alignment" and temporal synchronization through the "BrainSync" transform. We first describe BrainSync Alignment (BSA), a group-based extension of the pair-wise BrainSync transform, that jointly synchronizes resting or task fMRI data across time for multiple subjects. We then explore the combination of BSA with Response Hyper-Alignment (RHA) and compare with Connectivity Hyper-Alignment (CHA), an alternative approach to spatial alignment based on resting fMRI. The result of applying RHA and BSA is both to produce improved functional spatial correspondence across a group of subjects, and to align their time-series so that, even for spontaneous resting data, we see highly correlated temporal dynamics at homologous locations across the group. These spatiotemporally aligned data can then be used as an atlas in future applications. We explore the relative performance of BSA/RHA and CHA by computing spatial maps of inter-subject correlation of spatially aligned and synchronized rfMRI data. We also perform a validation study by applying the spatial transforms to z-score maps from an independent task fMRI dataset Finally, we also explore application of these spatio-temporal alignment methods directly to task fMRI data.

image filtering is an important process frequently used in image processing applications in order to eliminate the noise of noisy images caused by disturbing effects. As digital images are often distorted by noise during shooting, and with the effects of other factors may in some cases make the original characteristics of the image unobservable. For this reason, noise reduction is an important step for the analysis of noisy images produced by digital camera flaws and during transmission of data. Noise reduction improves perception of images and usually results in better performance for different image analysis and computer vision algorithms. In this study, an alternative fuzzy set and 5x5, 3x5, 2x3 size filtering windows and mean - median filters were used to reduce salt-pepper noise. The performances of the proposed methods are then compared with some methods in the literature according to Peak signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Square Error (MSE) on 10 test images.

The trend of pushing inference from cloud to edge due to concerns of latency, bandwidth, and privacy has created demand for energy-efficient neural network hardware. This paper presents a mixed-signal binary convolutional neural network (CNN) processor for always-on inference applications that achieves 3.8 mu J/classification at 86% accuracy on the CIFAR-10 image classification data set. The goal of this paper is to establish the minimum-energy point for the representative CIFAR-10 inference task, using the available design tradeoffs. The BinaryNet algorithm for training neural networks with weights and activations constrained to + 1 and -1 drastically simplifies multiplications to xNOR and allows integrating all memory on-chip. A weight-stationary, data-parallel architecture with input reuse amortizes memory access across many computations, leaving wide vector summation as the remaining energy bottleneck. This design features an energy-efficient switched-capacitor (SC) neuron that addresses this challenge, employing a 1024-bit thermometer-coded capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) section for summing pointwise products of CNN filter weights and activations and a 9-bit binary-weighted section for adding the filter bias. The design occupies 6 mm(2) in 28-nm CMOS, contains 328 kB of on-chip SRAM, operates at 237 frames/s (FPS), and consumes 0.9 mW from 0.6 V/0.8 V supplies. The corresponding energy per classification (3.8 mu J) amounts to a 40x improvement over the previous low-energy benchmark on CIFAR-10, achieved in part by sacrificing some programmability. The SC neuron array is 12.9x more energy efficient than a synthesized digital implementation, which amounts to a 4x advantage in system-level energy per classification.

Neural networks are exerting burgeoning influence in emerging artificial intelligence applications at the micro-edge, such as sensing systems and image processing. As many of these systems are typically self-powered, their circuits are expected to be resilient and efficient in the presence of continuous power variations caused by the harvesters. In this paper, we propose a novel mixed-signal (i.e. analogue/digital) approach of designing a power-elastic perceptron using the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM). Fundamental to the design are a number of parallel inverters that transcode the input-weight pairs based on the principle of PWM duty cycle. Since PWM-based inverters are typically agnostic to amplitude and frequency variations, the perceptron shows a high degree of power elasticity and robustness under these variations. We show extensive design analysis in Cadence Analog Design Environment tool using a 3 x 3 perceptron circuit as a case study to demonstrate the resilience in the presence of parameric variations.
