Many applications rely on the local descriptors extracted around a collection of interest points. Recently, the security of local descriptors has been attracting increasing attention. In this paper, we study the possibility of image reconstruction from these descriptors, and propose a coarse-to-fine framework for the image reconstruction. By resorting to our gradually reconstructing network architecture, the novel multiscale feature map generation algorithm, and the strategically designed loss functions, our proposed algorithm can recover the images with very high perceptual quality, even partial descriptors are provided only. Extensive experimental results are reported to show its superiority over the existing algorithms. Our study implies that the local descriptors contain surprisingly rich information of the original image. Users should pay more attention to sensitive information leakage when using local descriptors.

image aesthetic assessment aims at computationally evaluating the quality of images based on artistic perceptions. Although existing deep learning based approaches have obtained promising performance, they typically use the high-level features in the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for aesthetic prediction. However, low-level and intermediate-level features are also highly correlated with image aesthetic. In this paper, we propose to use multi-level features from a CNN for learning effective image aesthetic assessment models. Specially, we extract features from multi-layers and then aggregate them for predicting a image aesthetic score. To evaluate its effectiveness, we build three multi-layer aggregation networks (MLANs) based on different baseline networks, including MobileNet, VGG16, and Inception-v3, respectively. Experimental results show that aggregating multilayer features consistently and considerably achieved improved performance. Besides, MLANs show significant superiority over previous state-of-the-art in the aesthetic score prediction task.

This work manifests the implementation of mem-ristive 2-D median filter and extends previously published works on memristive filter design to include this emerging technology characteristics in image processing. The proposed circuit was designed based on Pt/TaOx/Ta redox-based device and Memristor Ratioed Logic (MRL). The proposed filter is designed in Cadence and the memristive median approved tested circuit is translated to Verilog-xL as a behavioral model. Different 512 x 512 pixels input images contain salt and pepper noise with various noise density ratios are applied to the proposed median filter and the design successfully has substantially removed the noise. In comparison with the conventional filters, it gives better Peak signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) for different images with different noise density ratios while it saves more area as compared to CMOS-based design.

images of outdoor scenes are often degraded by particles and water droplets in the atmosphere. Haze, fog, and smoke are such phenomena due to atmospheric absorption and scattering. Numerous image dehazing (haze removal) methods have been proposed in the last two decades, and the majority of them employ an image enhancing or restoration approach. Different variants of local adaptive algorithms for single image dehazing are also known. A haze-free image must have higher contrast compared with the input hazy image. It is possible to remove haze by maximizing the local contrast of the restored image. Some haze removal approaches estimate a dehazed image from an observed hazed scene by solving an objective function, whose parameters are adapted to local statistics of the hazed image inside a moving window. In the signal and image processing a common way to solve the denoising problem utilizes the total variation regularization. In this presentation we propose a new algorithm combining local estimates of depth maps toward a global map by regularization the total variation for piecewise-constant functions. Computer simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm for restoration of hazed images.

Tightly embedded systems often require low power real time processing of acquired sensor data. This paper presents the design and transistor-level implementation of a mixed-signal processing element for highly area-constrained systems in applications where approximate computing is sufficient. The analog processing unit consists of a switched capacitor circuit whose imperfections such as finite gain or offset errors are evaluated here through theoretical analyses and Monte Carlo simulations for a CMOS 0.35 mu m technology. Transistor-level simulation results further demonstrate that this processing unit is suitable for image pre-processing tasks such as spatial convolution for edge detection.

x-ray computed tomography is widely used in security applications. With growing interest in view-limited systems, which have increased throughput, there is a significant interest in constrained image reconstruction techniques that allows high fidelity reconstruction from limited data. These image reconstruction techniques are commonly characterized by their intense computational requirements making their deployment in real-time imaging applications challenging. Recent success of deep learning techniques in various signal and image processing applications has sparked an interest in using these techniques for image reconstruction problems. In this work, we explore the use of deep learning techniques for reconstruction of baggage CT data and compare these techniques to constrained reconstruction methods.

In order to design a tracking algorithm with invariance to pose, occlusion, clutter, and illumination changes of a scene, non-overlapping signal models for input scenes as well as for objects of interest and Synthetic Discriminant Function approach are exploited. A set of optimum correlation filters with respect to peak-to-output energy is derived for different target versions in each frame. A prediction method is utilized to locate a target patch in the coming frame. The algorithm performance is tested in terms of recognition and localization errors in real scenarios and compared with that of the state-of-the-art tracking algorithms.

The Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is rich with information's. But, they suffer from poor contrast, illumination and noise. Thus, it is required to enhance the images. But, these significant information can be lost if improper techniques are applied. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method of enhancement. We applied firstly the CLAHE method to increase the contrast of the image. Then, we applied the sum of Top-Hat Transform to increase the brightness of vessels. It is performed with the structuring element oriented in different angles. The methodology is tested and evaluated on the publicly available database BRAINIx. And, we used the measurement methods MSE (Mean Square Error), PSNR (Peak signal to Noise Ratio) and SNR (signal to Noise Ratio) for the evaluation. The results demonstrate that the proposed method could efficiently enhance the image details and is comparable with state of the art algorithms. Hence, the proposed method could be broadly used in various applications.

If a scanning illumination spot is combined with a detector array, we acquire a 4 dimensional signal. Unlike confocal microscopy with a small pinhole, we detect all the light from the object, which is particularly important for fluorescence microscopy, when the signal is weak. The image signal is basically a cross-correlation, and is highly redundant. It has more than sufficient information to reconstruct an improved resolution image. A 2D image can be generated from the measured signal by pixel reassignment. The result is improved resolution and signal strength, the system being called image scanning microscopy. A variety of different signal processing techniques can be used to predict the reassignment and deconvolve the partial images. We use an innovative single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array detector of 25 detectors (arranged into a 5 x 5 matrix). We can simultaneously acquire 25 partial images and process to calculate the final reconstruction online.

Traditional median smoother for 2D images is insensitive to impulse noise but generates flat areas as unwanted artifacts. The proposed approach to overcome this issue is based on the minimization of the regularized form of total variation functional. At first the continuous functional is defined for n-dimensional signal in an integral form with regularization term. The continuous functional is converted to the discrete form using equidistant spatial sampling in point grid of pixels, voxels or other elements. This approach is suitable for traditional signal and image processing. The total variance is then converted to the sum of absolute intensity differences as a minimization criterion. The functional convexity guarantees the existence of global minimum and absence of local extremes. Resulting non-linear filter iteratively calculates local medians using red-black method of Successive Over/Under Relaxation (SOR) scheme. The optimal value of the relaxation parameter is also subject to our study. The sensitivity to regularization parameter enables to design high-pass and nonlinear band-pass filters as the difference between the image and low-pass smoother or as the difference between two different low-pass smoothers, respectively. Various median based approaches are compared in the paper.
